Yes! I loved the intertwined fps and rts modes of H&G, it made every battle feel much more important than just a single battle. It gave me a desire to make the most of the assault team resources I was using. It gave me a reason to fight on the ground as a pilot after my plane was shot down.
What made H&G fun for me can be boiled down to 2 factors: 1. The assault lines. Afaik other games like BF1 or RS2V have game modes that are similar to one line being active, but without the back and forth. 2. The asymmetric gameplay, both in weapons being unique to factions and resources being uneven in war battles.

About War Thunder, I was quite an active player a few months ago and have finally completed USA to 11.7 tanks and 9.3 for France's tanks (I don't play planes). So here is my warning to players wanting to go in. If you are planning on playing Free To Play, you will make roughly 2500 research points per match (roughly 2 kills and 2 assists). With the total RP cost of a single 10.0 vehicle and with that amount of research points (RP) it will take you 45hrs of continuous play to unlock a single 10.0 tank from 9.7. If you play only a couple of hours a day (let's say 2 hours as standard), it will take you roughly 400 days to unlock a single Tech Tree Faction (Just tanks, it will be 800 days if you add planes and more if you add ships). This is a big cause to buy Premiums, however I cannot recommend buying Top Tier Premiums (the ones at 11.3) as a new player you won't have a proper group of ground vehicles to help support your team (unless you buy a lot of premiums). I will repeat, that is for 1 subsection of a single nation! Roughly 400 days of 2 hour playtime is a lot of commitment for a game that is selling 70$ tanks to you. It is quite alright to reach 6.7 to 7.7 as a Free to Play player. Going from 8.0 however you will feel tired and just want to research faster. This is where you will start spending and find that even with your new T80 or Abrams you will suffer from bad winrates. It gets better over time, but USA is a real struggle a 11.3, not because of bad vehicles, just new players who spawn in their 11.3 tank, die and then respawn in a 1.0 tank. Take your time and don't let the snail get your soul!

It's pretty tough to find something to replace HG indeed. Enlisted doesn't hit the same and HLL is way less arcade-y. I guess I'll wait for the Beyond Heroes project or Warbound to come out if they ever will.

I played Enlisted for 1 year as a alternative of H&G.... but.. u know it's still insufficient... there is literally no alternative!! I can't believe I'm feeling this sad for just a single game....
The fun part of H&G is that every single game is different eve same map, esp we can sneak from behind enemy line and of course take revenge and find that annoying Recon hiding in the brush !!!!!!
Enlisted has more similarity to H&G. War thunder is suffering (at least for me.) I was never that into H&G but I know how you feel because as a kid I played a game called "Army Rage" that was killed/died.
Loved H&G back when i used to play it, favourite feature was when I became a taxi jeep for the boys walking into the town, the amount of guys you could put on the jeep was just funny cause if a tank saw us we’d all be dead 😂
The problem with finding a replacement is that individual matches don't matter like they did in war in hng. That's why i kept playing even though hng was ass. Sure, there are other games that have persistent wars etc. (like planetside). Trouble is, its very hard to contribute to the wars without being a clan in a lot of those games.
Tanking in HnG is done with those GAZ rambos who bounce on topography and whistle and kill each other while making the most random chemistry using H3 halfdonangangakdg , hand grenades and watermelon launchers
War Thunder could never replace HnG. WT lacks the combined arms warfare of infantry, tanks and planes. The only ww2 themed game coming close to that is Enlisted. But recently i found myself playing BF4 anyway.
I'm actually happy how you described the reality about War Thunder and T H E S N A I L (Don't play War Thunder, it just makes you miserable. After 3.3k hours I managed to quit it and in those 5 months my life has improved A LOT) Maybe you mentioned/played before but a somewhat repleacement for H&G is Enlisted. Yes, yet again The Snail made the game, but it shares many similarities with H&G, hell, even when it came out I described Enlisted as "a mixture between H&G and Post Scriptum (Squad 44 now)" I stopped playing Enlisted a long ago due to the absolute horrible grind and horrible mechanics but if someone really wants an alternative for H&G I would give it a chance
Those glory days of Enlisted before the merge were gone and it already lost an important part on what makes this game unique compared to the likes of Hell Let Loose, Squad 44 or something else.
Sadly, I don't think there will ever be another H&G to take its place. From someone who played both games side by side since 2019, I will say that War Thunder does a really good job at somewhat replacing the thrills of tank on tank and ariel combat that was in H&G. Over the last year or so a lot of the game's problems have been (maybe not completely but substantially) ironed out. In the lower tiers which are predominantly WWII-era vehicles I can't say that there are many left over until you start reaching the early cold war-era vehicles
I've been going back to the FHSW mod for Battlefield 1942 and FH2 for Battlefield 2. Both can be played completely for free even if you don't have those games previously nowadays. And while both of these mods and games are old they have been updated even this year. Every player also has access to everything from the start.
I switched to Enlisted for quite a long time but I'm a little tired of the genre atm. But I'd go back to Enlisted if I get the itch. They've recently reworked all research trees. It's also the same people as War Thunder
It's tough and you're right, HnG was so broken in its own right but it was a special kind of fun, I'm afraid we won't ever see HnG again, o7 to all those good moments, what a janky ass game but it was so so fun. No matter the grind, no matter the imbalance, bad updates performance issues etc. it was something we could call home and now it's gone it's time to move on, but I'm afraid we never will.
Sooo, i like ww2 games as h&g and a game which does things just way better i terms of progression, gameplay and details or content about ww2 is enlisted ( same Company that made war Thunder: Gajin). The game also gives u the option to play as tanker, pilot or many other infantry based troops like pioneer or basic rifle man. For me this game found a place in my heart

The game I found similar to HnG was Battlebit. Played for 180 hours now and I do enjoy the simplistic meetgrinder that HnG Fortress sometimes turned into. Still there is no variety of modes, gameplays and approaches to that game, yet, for a former HnG player there'd be something interesting
Rip H&G I grew up on that game. I had 2500 hours. Still can't believe its gone. Even though all the developer shuffling and changes I didn't always like I still loved it. It was so easy to jump on and have a good time. I play a lot less games now but nothing comes close to replacing H&G. Enlisted is okay, but its just not enough to hold my attention. Ive been playing another dead game called Americas Army Proving Grounds. But at least when it went EOL the game still had self hosted servers. So it still has a small dedicated community. I wish there was a way to get private servers going for H&G before they killed it.
What I loved was the great mix of acrade and "realism". Of course it wasn't "realistic", but almost all other shooters are either too slow paced for me, or an ADHD simulator where everyone is an olympic acrobat.
I still remember the good and bad memories this game gave me in my 2k hours from 2015. all the way to the final matches of 2023. Rest easy H&G, you will be missed
I mean, I've found and played Enlisted as the "replacement" and I gotta say, if H&G is ever going to come back miraculously, I'm not going to come back, it was underoptimized (I never had even a mid pc to play it properly with 12 fps and everything blurry, don't know till this day how I managed to play it in those conditions), unbalanced in every single way and no new content but when it was dying and it wasn't even good. I only miss the first 1-2 years when I knew it as it brings nostalgia, but I prefer it to stay as a good memory and to rest in peace.
Ive already moved on, but as a result of this game's death, i have not been involved with my friend group that played it. So i get nostalgic remembering early pandemic days ^_^
I just play HLL and battlebit now, not really a replacement but battlebit gives me the funy feeling and HLL the ww2 aspect when i drive the trucks to bring supplies around. RIP the goated H&G :(
I play Enlisted now, it's also free. The graphics are amazing, however the animations kinda suck, although it is a pretty new game and is actively being worked on. Also, the helmets feel kinda flimsy compared to Heroes and Generals, but it's all I've got. I absolutely LOOVED that actual war gamemode Heroes and Generals had, where everything ACTUALLY made an impact. Nothing will ever replace that, I don't think.
man I miss playin H&G!! I loved that game sooooo much and had literal thousands of hours. I remember playin with and against Kotton, the whacky physics, the honestly pretty good gunplay, and great vehicles. I also do play WT and have thousands of hours in it as well.
this was only game i was addicted to. Big gun with combined double shooter above the truck was my favourite, i shoot continuously. thats huge fun,. I try all available war games, but can't play with intrest. Can i execute the installed game in the pc?
@@ryder1046 i doubt that gamemode is player vs player, i played the game when it came out, and even in the player vs player, it was mostly bots using players names, same as in squad mode devs use that tactic to make you think theres real players sadly...
enlisted isn't too bad, it's basically HnG minus the RTS(i think, it's been a minute). it has planes, tanks but mainly revolves around infantry squad play, but your squad is ai and when you die you can take over one of them.
I have to admit I was a little disappointed that the game recommendation was WT, considering Ive had War Thunder since just after I got H&G. And that I already have nearly 1,300 hours while in WT and only around 650 in H&G when it sunsetted.
I used to play a game really long ago Wolfenstein enemy territory Kinda had the same feeling with it, only sad part about it is that nobody plays it, and all servers are full of bots
Yup still miss the RTS part quite a lot, together with 20v20 battles (and not 5v5 or battle royal or something like quite a few shooters) H&G just has something magical i guess... Had a lot of fun... As for War Thunder you kinda need the premium otherwise it isn't really worth ur time. (Nvm the high tier stuff, as in +8.0)

Combined Arms, 2-3 hits and someone is dead (if you are a good player you feel like god and have a lot lot fun), and Rts behind it made it meaningfull and adictive
I loved H&G back in the day. I'm playing Enlisted now, it's really good, it has Infantry, Tanks, Planes and pretty fun maps. It's Made by Darkflow software and Published by Big Pappa Snail (Gaijin), but it's not Grind hell like War Thunder. Hope they'll put in a World War mode like H&G had.
you should really try realistic mode, i think once you will get the hang of it, you will enjoy it way more since it will be less arcady and you will actually have to lock in and spot enemies yourself n stuff, plus you get way better rewards so the grind should be easier
What i loved about HnG was the complete freedom. The freedom to customize your character and their equipment. I would spend hundreds of hours playing as a medic with no weapon haha. Also the freedom you get on the large maps is unprecedented. HnG with its simplicity and freedom was really a universe to enjoy, even in spite of the bugs and dev degeneracy.
i tried to replace h&g with enlisted but the game was so grindy and the xp was low when you play matches where bots were excluded .That's what kept me away from the other gajin games .
Still looking... played enlisted for about a month and have up..think I had like 3-4,000 hours into the game since like 2015/2016 before it was on steam, when they had it in the web browser D;

Been playing a game call Scorched Earth on roblox, it more of a fast pace Hell let loose/Squad 44 then H&G but it have that back n fourth. It replace the H&G craving for me but i do miss the old time
Played H&G since beta and stopped around when they upgrade the graphic and the tank mehanic, maybe try Hell Let Loose, its has tanks and infarty combat but it more like millsim but it was fun
The game Heroes & Generals can easily be replaced by games like: Hell Let Loose, Forgotten Hope 2, Fog of War, Battlefield 1942 Remastered, which is available in the Portal mode of Battlefield 2042, and the modified WW2 servers of Operation Harsh Doorstop.
The grind in WT is not that bad if you are a WW2 main. Me and my friends gave it a try for about 2 months but stopped playing once we reached the BRs with Tigers and Panthers. Anything more advanced than that and you'll be fighting cold war vehicles with thermal optics and guided missiles, no fun :/
Its so simple yet can be so strategic if need be. It had this perfect balance between arcade shooter and strategic shooter that no other game has even come close. Cod: Too arcadey Battlefield: Can play strategically in the same way Enlisted: Joke of an fps and not even comparable HLL: Too milsim. Playing competently is actually a part time job
Tbh, the truth of why H&G special is that you can be super OP by grinding super hard in the game(or just p2w) it really provide you a driving force to keep grinding in it and by the more you grind you just can't quit it anymore. Some said H&G is unique by having armer, infantry, and aircraft on one battlefield but have you ever heard battlefield series? A 3A title which is fuck times better than H&G back then when it was still a things. The unbelence and gear grind is what truly make H&G stand out. Destory tank in BF can only prove your skill but all we looking at in H&G tank = money = better gear = been more OP, we hunt the tank, you eager to destroy it and that's no other FPS can give us that's just how special H&G was.
I played many games after H&G. The ones I liked are War Thunder and PUBG. Both are quite different but as an old H&G player, it clicked with me for some reason.
I did find myself playing War Thunder as a replacement. I would think the closest thing to H&G might be Enlisted (for those who don't know, basically War Thunder with infantry squads) and idk about others but for me it's just not fun. I'd like it better if you had singular soldiers to switch between instead of squads with AI, there is a mode that has something like that but the spawning mechanic where you need to select a specific soldier from a squad is meh in my opinion.

Yes, I also play a lot of counter strike and your second point is a great explanation to the appeal of counter strikes ingame economy.

war thunder can fill the gap somewhat but the hng infantry really hits different i hope warthunder do infantry in the future

Rip H&G I grew up on that game. I had 2500 hours. Still can't believe its gone. Even though all the developer shuffling and changes I didn't always like I still loved it. It was so easy to jump on and have a good time. I play a lot less games now but nothing comes close to replacing H&G. Enlisted is okay, but its just not enough to hold my attention. Ive been playing another dead game called Americas Army Proving Grounds. But at least when it went EOL the game still had self hosted servers. So it still has a small dedicated community. I wish there was a way to get private servers going for H&G before they killed it.
Me and my H&G veterans switched to Enlisted and now iam TH-camr and Enlisted CC..so the sad end of H&G had a good end for me 😂
What I loved was the great mix of acrade and "realism".
Of course it wasn't "realistic", but almost all other shooters are either too slow paced for me, or an ADHD simulator where everyone is an olympic acrobat.
I still remember the good and bad memories this game gave me in my 2k hours from 2015. all the way to the final matches of 2023.
Rest easy H&G, you will be missed
I couldn't even find the replacement for Enlisted after the merge update and its just frustrating to not have alternatives.
one of the best games ive ever played,its super simple to play and so much fun i had like 3k hours on it and i played like 3h a day max

I mean, I've found and played Enlisted as the "replacement" and I gotta say, if H&G is ever going to come back miraculously, I'm not going to come back, it was underoptimized (I never had even a mid pc to play it properly with 12 fps and everything blurry, don't know till this day how I managed to play it in those conditions), unbalanced in every single way and no new content but when it was dying and it wasn't even good. I only miss the first 1-2 years when I knew it as it brings nostalgia, but I prefer it to stay as a good memory and to rest in peace.
Ive already moved on, but as a result of this game's death, i have not been involved with my friend group that played it. So i get nostalgic remembering early pandemic days ^_^
I just play HLL and battlebit now, not really a replacement but battlebit gives me the funy feeling and HLL the ww2 aspect when i drive the trucks to bring supplies around. RIP the goated H&G :(
I play Enlisted now, it's also free. The graphics are amazing, however the animations kinda suck, although it is a pretty new game and is actively being worked on. Also, the helmets feel kinda flimsy compared to Heroes and Generals, but it's all I've got. I absolutely LOOVED that actual war gamemode Heroes and Generals had, where everything ACTUALLY made an impact. Nothing will ever replace that, I don't think.

As someone with over 300 hours in war thunder I can tell you that it becomes way more of a toxic relationship than H&G X)
man I miss playin H&G!! I loved that game sooooo much and had literal thousands of hours. I remember playin with and against Kotton, the whacky physics, the honestly pretty good gunplay, and great vehicles. I also do play WT and have thousands of hours in it as well.

this was only game i was addicted to. Big gun with combined double shooter above the truck was my favourite, i shoot continuously. thats huge fun,. I try all available war games, but can't play with intrest. Can i execute the installed game in the pc?
I got hooked to Enlisted the previous month and i kinda like it.

@@ryder1046 i doubt that gamemode is player vs player, i played the game when it came out, and even in the player vs player, it was mostly bots using players names, same as in squad mode
devs use that tactic to make you think theres real players sadly...

enlisted isn't too bad, it's basically HnG minus the RTS(i think, it's been a minute). it has planes, tanks but mainly revolves around infantry squad play, but your squad is ai and when you die you can take over one of them.

I have to admit I was a little disappointed that the game recommendation was WT, considering Ive had War Thunder since just after I got H&G. And that I already have nearly 1,300 hours while in WT and only around 650 in H&G when it sunsetted.
I want to play heroes and general we would have to be able to host games on our pc or small server but that will never happen...

Yup still miss the RTS part quite a lot, together with 20v20 battles (and not 5v5 or battle royal or something like quite a few shooters)
H&G just has something magical i guess... Had a lot of fun...
As for War Thunder you kinda need the premium otherwise it isn't really worth ur time. (Nvm the high tier stuff, as in +8.0)

alright this is cool and all but H&G was the very reason I swapped over from war thunder over to it, the game had both the tanks AND the infantry combat combined, well then I should just play enlisted right? right guys? right?
Combined Arms, 2-3 hits and someone is dead (if you are a good player you feel like god and have a lot lot fun), and Rts behind it made it meaningfull and adictive
I loved H&G back in the day. I'm playing Enlisted now, it's really good, it has Infantry, Tanks, Planes and pretty fun maps. It's Made by Darkflow software and Published by Big Pappa Snail (Gaijin), but it's not Grind hell like War Thunder. Hope they'll put in a World War mode like H&G had.
Enlisted is better than War Thunder. They're both Russian Developers so I don't want my money to go to them given global political events.
you should really try realistic mode, i think once you will get the hang of it, you will enjoy it way more since it will be less arcady and you will actually have to lock in and spot enemies yourself n stuff, plus you get way better rewards so the grind should be easier
What i loved about HnG was the complete freedom. The freedom to customize your character and their equipment. I would spend hundreds of hours playing as a medic with no weapon haha. Also the freedom you get on the large maps is unprecedented. HnG with its simplicity and freedom was really a universe to enjoy, even in spite of the bugs and dev degeneracy.
There's something right about HnG, despite being not that good. It's unlike BF and COD.
i tried to replace h&g with enlisted but the game was so grindy and the xp was low when you play matches where bots were excluded .That's what kept me away from the other gajin games .

I replaced H&G with Enlisted but it wasn't the same. Maps too tight and most of them just not fun to play on and also just missing the strategy part.
Well I have already switched to Enlisted, but I'll always remember HnG.
Been playing a game call Scorched Earth on roblox, it more of a fast pace Hell let loose/Squad 44 then H&G but it have that back n fourth. It replace the H&G craving for me but i do miss the old time

Played H&G since beta and stopped around when they upgrade the graphic and the tank mehanic, maybe try Hell Let Loose, its has tanks and infarty combat but it more like millsim but it was fun
I think Enlisted is pretty much H&G with good graphics, it even is also a Snail game so you also get the abusive relationship element.
The game Heroes & Generals can easily be replaced by games like: Hell Let Loose, Forgotten Hope 2, Fog of War, Battlefield 1942 Remastered, which is available in the Portal mode of Battlefield 2042, and the modified WW2 servers of Operation Harsh Doorstop.

The grind in WT is not that bad if you are a WW2 main. Me and my friends gave it a try for about 2 months but stopped playing once we reached the BRs with Tigers and Panthers. Anything more advanced than that and you'll be fighting cold war vehicles with thermal optics and guided missiles, no fun :/
Its so simple yet can be so strategic if need be. It had this perfect balance between arcade shooter and strategic shooter that no other game has even come close.
Cod: Too arcadey
Battlefield: Can play strategically in the same way
Enlisted: Joke of an fps and not even comparable
HLL: Too milsim. Playing competently is actually a part time job
Tbh, the truth of why H&G special is that you can be super OP by grinding super hard in the game(or just p2w) it really provide you a driving force to keep grinding in it and by the more you grind you just can't quit it anymore.
Some said H&G is unique by having armer, infantry, and aircraft on one battlefield but have you ever heard battlefield series? A 3A title which is fuck times better than H&G back then when it was still a things. The unbelence and gear grind is what truly make H&G stand out.
Destory tank in BF can only prove your skill but all we looking at in H&G tank = money = better gear = been more OP, we hunt the tank, you eager to destroy it and that's no other FPS can give us that's just how special H&G was.
I played many games after H&G. The ones I liked are War Thunder and PUBG. Both are quite different but as an old H&G player, it clicked with me for some reason.

If you like War Thunder you should try out Enlisted, it's made by the same developers and has playable infantry

I did find myself playing War Thunder as a replacement. I would think the closest thing to H&G might be Enlisted (for those who don't know, basically War Thunder with infantry squads) and idk about others but for me it's just not fun. I'd like it better if you had singular soldiers to switch between instead of squads with AI, there is a mode that has something like that but the spawning mechanic where you need to select a specific soldier from a squad is meh in my opinion.
