as a veteran since 2012 of HG with more than 25.000 hours invested, i still think of HG like as it's first day. I was a bit disappointed you didn't saw my comment, regarding to take a look on the Easy RED 2 game, made by one indie developer but with a fanatic community.
interesting way to look at hng 🤔 cant' say i view it the same way tbh... funny you should say that, i did in fact see it :D you see i recorded myself answering a whole bunch of comments about a week ago. and when i was done recording i realized the recording was over an hour and half long XD the 2 videos i've put up are not even half of that XDDDD your comment is there cause i member answering it but i guess it didnt get put into a video yet. i did look at easy red 2 previously and again after you recommended it specially with the steam summer sale on at the time. both times i looked the game looked super dedge, pretty sure in my reply to you i asked if you could tell me about ur own thoughts on that game... spoiler alert i guess 😅
I remember one time in HnG when I was playing on the Soviet side as a tanker in Airfield I think, we were down on the last point in the west but desperately trying to outlast the Germans to the last man. Soon enough, our infantry was wiped (iirc). In a desperate move, the few tankers we were left with went on to just charge (to which I basically said, ""Frack" it, I'll join the charge") the next point and took it as the Germans were nearing the capture of our last point, and we just continued on taking more points soon after while trying to outrun the Germans in pursuit. We won the game... and that's the most memorable match I had because of the sheer desperation, and the celebratory mood when we realised that we may actually and surprisingly win despite being hammered and was supposed to lose at that point.
I've been playing Enlisted 3 years since OBT was released and prior to those days I played HnG, I hope you see this comment because I want to know what you think. When I first played HnG I was often getting farmed by players who seemed to be untouchable, I'd aim my pathetic Garand at some dude wearing a flamboyant camo pattern and wielding an incredibly girthy STG 44 with a polished scope mounted on top of it with an extremely long barrel and I would get destroyed, every single time, it especially didn't help that I was playing US, from what I understood at the time, GE had more players, and the US had more of that one guy in your school group work who was always the designated cheerleader and didn't do anything productive. It was very clear why the moment I found out about Enlisted's release I immediately switched. It took me a very VERY long time to actually appreciate what HnG was trying to do, this happened when I finally reached the pinnacle of Enlisted finesse and was now wearing incredibly flamboyant uniforms and wielded incredibly thick and girthy guns like the MG 42, the Fedorov, and the Browning 1918 MG did I soon realized that this is the same situation I found myself in, except this time I was doing the pegging, and unlike HnG I had 8 loyal kittens who followed me everywhere I go who also carried *very* big "sticks" in their respective inventories. It was when I started to talk to HnG veterans who found their retirement home in Enlisted did I begin to understand just how amazing HnG was and how it could've been extremely monumental in FPS history, here was a game where aside from the FPS aspect also had an RTS perspective. The fact that the vehicles and the tanks you could spawn all came from a player trying to push the battle in our favor, probably wasting his time and probably money in the process is fascinating and honestly beautiful. Is there really any other WW2 f2p fps game with this kind of depth and level of 'arcade-ness' ? If I search into Google now about any f2p WW2 fps game into the search bar, I'd get nothing, nothing other than Enlisted. HnG and Enlisted could've genuinely coexisted together, each providing an alternative way to experience the horrors of the second world war for free, especially when you consider the fact that both can run on low end systems, like my hand me down laptop covered in cheeto dust and stickers of scantily clad women in various forms of undress on the cover (Thanks Dad). Reto seriously dropped the ball game HARD, they had the winning formula, and yet they still found a way to lose. Personally from my perspective, I like Enlisted much more than HnG, if HnG had a macro perspective with it's RTS mode, Enlisted has a more personal micro perspective with your squads. Lots of people claim Enlisted is a "bot farming shooter", which the way I see it is a completely disingenuous way to view the game. The bots are more like an extension of the player, you have to view them like your health bar, it's like the game Snake where you have to watch out for your own body whenever your trying to eat more food on the screen. This makes "PVP" in Enlisted an incredibly unique experience, you kill one guy, but you know he's not dead, because somewhere he has a squad waiting for you, and he's pissed, or maybe you meet his squad all at once, it could be in a field, or you could enter inside a house and have a Saving Private Ryan moment where you suddenly meet a squad of Germans out of the blue and start yelling at each other, and what's worse is that they're all armed to the teeth with FG 42s set to fully automatic so you get the authentic firing squad experience, I cannot even begin to describe the amount of tension this kind of combat gives, I don't think any other FPS game could give me that. Lots of people say that the bots are incredibly idiotic and will not follow orders, it's probably because they're using the SQUAD command, and not the INDIVIDUAL command, if you command the bots individually, they will follow and they will stay where you command them to, the bots may be stupid yes and I have personally seen them run into an MG nest and into an area actively being bombed by artillery without my supervision, but honestly it is what it is, and if you have a sense of humor, maybe it could even be hilarious. It is a genuine tragedy that for many people who wanted a quirky WW2 f2p fps game, there is no other alternative than Enlisted, not all of them will like the bots and that's why HnG was there, it was Enlisted's counter part in every single way, and now it's gone. My heart goes out to the HnG players who were suddenly abandoned without a home and without a developer pegging them from behind, I hope you will be able to find the game that suits the hole HnG left behind.
I will always remember how good the H&G support was in 2018: I really accidentally bought a Pistol for 150 gold, because the game lagged and I wanted to click on something else. So I opened a ticket where I wrote about that and ask if I could get a refund. Later in the day I received a notification and they understood my case completely. They removed the Pistol out of my inventory and I got the 150 gold back. I was so amazed by Reto and I never thought that this will work.
glad my comment made ya laugh:). but ya it really is a shame how few other games fill the void. only other games in the genre i dip in and out of are things like HLL on one end of the spectrum and Battle bit on the extreme other end. besides that its fun if janky mods like forgotten hope 2 for BF2 which can be played for free but server pop is very low these days but still fun even if janky
There's a free game on Steam called Operation: Harsh Doorstop, and it has modded WWII servers. In fact, this game is a real replacement for Heroes and Generals.
I'm hearing through the grapevine. There is two separate people trying to reverse engineer this game using the files to make heroes n generals come back. Once I get the names of the projects I will repost and if you want to Investigate feel free
I see a lot of Enlisted comments, and I've been trying Enlisted for the past few weeks. Between the bots, grind, and claustrophobic maps, it's not filling the void very well. I feel like H&G's core FPS gameplay loop was better, and the battles being "meaningful" for the war was a nice bonus. The H&G community felt more lively too, but that's probably because it'd been around so long that "veterans" (self included) were always online and never shut up. H&G will always hold a special place in my heart, I played it for some 3000+ hours since 2015. I miss it. I just wish Reto-Moto had taken game development a little more seriously. The game desperately needed to draw in and keep new players but we got Squad 2.0, Armor 2.0 and other half-baked changes, most of which were long-term improvements EVENTUALLY but so much development time and money went into the initial unpopular implementations that it definitely wasn't a financial win. By the time they made any enhancements for new players, it was too little too late. But it was unique, battles felt meaningful, games were well-paced, and the community was/is great. I've seen that there's an ongoing fan-made "revival" project named Beyond Heroes, but I haven't been following it closely enough to know where it's at. I'm hoping it means I can walk across those same old maps again.
COD is great because it's like fast food. You don't go there to get a top tier resteraunt experience, you go there because you know what you're getting everytime. Who needs innovation when you have fun weapons to point and click at people.
As a Cursed Tank Simulator player with over 300 hours on the record, I agree with the guy's message. While yes it's a janky roblox videogame with goofy moments, I really appreciate the devs' passion for their project. And, probably what people say about roblox games all the time, this one's not your typical "get rich quick" piece of crap "game".
I got battlefield 1 the other day for $2 It's WWI themed but it's pretty good. Graphically demanding. (The min requirements are supposedly the same as Star Wars battlefront II on Steam but on my pc runs way better.) Gameplay is kinda similar, anyone can drop from planes if there are any and there's also horses.
I just came across this game called Easy Red 2. It seems similar to what HnG was. Infantry, tanks, and planes. It’s not free tho. Around $8 USD. But I think it’s the closest thing to fill that hole in my heart that H&G left.
There's a free game on Steam called Operation: Harsh Doorstop, and it has modded WWII servers. In fact, this game is a real replacement for Heroes and Generals.
foxhole maybe?? also if you plan on playing enlisted wait the devs are making some good changes but they take months to do even the most simple changes
I don't know how H&G still lives rent free in my hrad, but there was something about the game that just pulled you in even though it was constantly fucking you from behined, made me rageqiut a lot of times, you did feel good about what you did in the game. Also that you could fight multiple factions at the sama time and the unpredicableness of how the match will go. I still strugle to find what was the thing that made me stay playing and why I feel a strong connection to the game. I found a replacement for it in Battlebit remastered, but it's not the same.
I know I repeat myself from the first video but I think you should give the free and standalone Forgotten Hope 2 mod a try. It is similar to H&G in some ways but ttk is realistic and there is no grind. Besides the regular experience there is also "war event" held by the cmp community I think twice a year. It isn't often but the battles are fought on many weekends for the event and the maps are unique and themed around some campaign of ww2. Players sign up as either axis or allies and organize squads before the event starts.
