Cleese was so good in these scenes. A great actor. Almost transcends the comedy of the scene
Fwom what i've heawd. The extwa guawds in the backgwound wewe towd that it was a sewious scene and would be fiwed on the spot if they cwacked up.
Close. All the guards in the movie were told that they wouldn't get paid for their time if they laughed.
They wanted the reactions to be real, and like they actually couldn't laugh. They were paid in the end, but it makes some scenes so much funnier when you think about their circumstance.
Much funnier when they're actually struggling their hardest not to laugh
Well except for Cleese.
In the end when Bigus dickus addresses the crowd the commander himself put his head down to conceal his laughter XD
I saw this film on its release. The Biggus Dickus scene had me literally rolling on the cinema floor laughing, I was gasping for breath.

I remember seeing this in the theatres when it first came out in 1979; thought I was going to piss laughing. We (me, my buddies and pretty much the entire audience) laughed so hard we missed some of the humour.

This scene and the first one with Pilate where John Cleese is the centurion are great because John Cleese has often played the leading authority figure in a scene. Here he is subordinate to someone else and he's just as good in a subordinate character role. And Michael Palin and Graham Chapman are brilliant, especially Michael Palin. The timing and expressions - just magical elements of the comedy.
