    even though they may be running them at a fraction of their potential, it’s still an amazing car. i went to canepa’s shop and museum today to lay my eyes on this beast of a car, and i have to say, you gotta get right next to it to truly enjoy this work of art and engineering.

    Lapping the field even before Canepa started winding out the engine of the 917. Beast of a car. I just want to sit in one, one day. Would be a thrill to just do that, knowing what it’s capable of

    Most of us take these scenes for granted. I have seen a lot; Here in the U.S. and in Europe. To see three Gulf colored K's, plus others, could almost require a stretch of one's imagination. - Every second is priceless!

      Most likely the best street-legal sports car ever made... very desirable and a work of art once perfected. The 917 also included a collapsed spare tire to meet the class requirement as a sports car, a second seat and place to store luggage.
      Technically you could buy one and legally drive it home.
      This version was made for Daytona.

    Great video. Bruce, Chris and Gunnar were putting on a show for the fans. They all knew what they were doing. I've been watching them race for a number of years. Bruce loves to give competitors a lead, maybe start from the back and go for the win. He still has what it takes to drive fast.

    I just saw this car a couple of days ago on display in a racing heritage storage display window in Pontiac and was able to get close enough to get a good look. Impressively awesome! Thanks Bruce Canepa racing and TH-cam for making this story complete for me. Extremely awesome!!!

    They are not even pushing these cars. But for the rarity and cost of these legends, it ain't worth it getting into a banger. Usually in acceleration mode, the howl of that car is the best sound any race car has ever had. The movie with Steve McQueen going balls all out, the 917 had a mean roar when it came to the sound inside the car. My favorite racing movie. That and his Mustang GT scene in the movie bullet. Best chase scene ever.

    Was chassis 015 the only 917 with the roof window?

    • @re1644
      @re1644 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      there should be others. the roof window was installed for the Daytona curve, else the drivers would only have been able to see just in front of the car while going through that steep curve. The drivers else would have seen the slow cars much too late. So all 917s competing in Daytona had these windows. Here you can see 3 of them: th-cam.com/video/UochVxInM60/w-d-xo.html

    Would he not be wearing his HANS device because of the design of the car? Seems odd that you wouldn’t want the HANS on in a car that is not designed to absorb much impact.

    You would think the 917/30 would be hands down, no doubt, no contest the fastest car in that "race". Yet it started on the back and wasn't seen during the race. Wonder why? I would have loved to see it run.

    How this car lost to an antiquated GT-40 with a 302 V8 in the '69 Lemans is still a mystery.

    • @aurktman1106
      @aurktman1106 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, to be fair, none of the 917s finished the race. One fatal accident and the rest had mechanical issues.

    • @davedarling4316
      @davedarling4316 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Remember that in 1969, the 917 was almost undriveable. Their understanding of aero downforce was much less sophisticated than we have now. It wasn't until off-season testing between the 69 and 70 seasons that they realized that the car was almost lifting off the road. They changed up the body work until they got to the 917K shape, which had a lower top speed but was far more controllable. That's when they won.
      The very close finish in 1969 was between a 5-liter GT40 and a 3-liter 908.

    You have to learn to stop moving your hands around the steering for nothing . Keep them at 9.15 h all time . Adjust the distance from sterringwheel to you if needed .
    Learn how to rev matching properly with a good Heel toe down shifting . Tx
