    Most helpful!
    Just a comment on entering text: if you keep the selector pressed in and then rotate, it will move up/down instead of left/right when selecting characters.

    Hey Curtis, thanks for the Video! Is there a way to quickly edit the note of the last recorded take, without having to navigate through the finder and the edit metadata menu? I can edit the note for the NEXT take over shortcuts or the "NOTE" button of the FRC-8, which is kind of pointless I guess...

    Hi Curtis, thanks very much for all the videos you upload. Could you do a full course on Zoom F4 please? Also, I purchased the Zoom F4 but there are no online tutorials that I could find whatsoever. If not a full course, could you post a video that shows what the best settings are on the Zoom F4 with Rode NTG 2? Thank you

      Hi Taos, I'd sure love to do that, but alas, have not been able to find the time yet. The Zoom F8 setup video I did a while back holds mostly true for the F4 if that is of help to you: th-cam.com/video/KpddKcP8_SA/w-d-xo.html Best wishes!

    Hi Curtis. Very helpfull demonstration. Can you do it again but with all the recorders at the same time as a comparison purpose? Or with the ones that have the most comparable features. It would be nice to have your opinion in what we can find in every recorder and the implication in the workflow (which one is best for what kind of thing). Regards.

    Hi, thought I'd add that for F4 users I found that you actually use the option button instead of holding down the encoder button to open the menu that allows you to edit the metadata for a recorded take.

    Hi Curtis great tutorial as usual! I have the F8 and was wondering if you had any suggestions if I want to power it from a usb type battery pack. It would involve a USB to hirose cable and I assume as the pack is 12volt it would be okay although I have yet to find the correct cable. David

    • @LearnLightAndSoundSessions
      @LearnLightAndSoundSessions  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi David, the only USB style battery and cable I've found to work was this combination:

    Hi Curtis. I have a question, hope you know the answer. In the metadata when I put the names of the channels like boom, wireless, etc. I can’t see those name when I import them to protools... theres a way to do that?
    Thanks for tor time!

  • @Knightofspirit

    Nice tutorial! I found out the hard way, that the counter doesn't go above take "999", which was a problem for me. In Hungary we usually go from take "1" to the last take of the film, and only change the scene name. I wonder if this could be fixed in a firmware update, to go 4 digits, which should be plenty.

    Hello Curtis! What if the scene format is for instance Scene Shot Take? I usually slate that way. Can the F4 automatically just skip the Shot as opposed to scene? Or can I create a master folder for a scene and then subfolders for the Shot numbers? Thank you

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just the latter - create a subfolder for a scene and it'll count up the takes.

      Curtis, this is a question I should know the answer to but don't. When do you label a take as a circle? Another question I have, is can you label a scene name along with a number followed by a letter, or would I have to manually rename those at the end of the day?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Alejandro, I usually circle a take when the director indicates that was the take they like best or that they plan to use in the edit. For your second question, you might be able to manually create folders with scene names and a number and then set up the F4/F8 to use a character to increment scene names. Or you could do that at the end of the shoot. Best wishes!

    Great video! Do you know whether the faders on the F4 can be switched between pre and post monitoring so as not to affect your mix track? Also, can one create a sound report with the F4?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi MeetMikeSal, you can change the PFL mode so that when you enter the channel menu you either hear PFL or you can change it to solo. And yes, the F4 will create sound reports in the Finder menu when you select the folder for your project.

    Hello mr curtis thanks for the knowledge so I’m wandering after using the meta data on the zoom f8n to create reports and channels naming, does the editor need a software download to show the sound report phase like you just did above or does it just open up when place on a system? Thanks and I’m waiting for the reply

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It creates a CSV file. Most spreadsheet apps can open that like Excel or Numbers.

  • @RobGemmell82
    @RobGemmell82 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dang, this makes me wish I waited and saved for the F4 instead of buying the H6. Renaming files after is such a pain, especially when you screw up your notes like I do.
    Great tutorial as usual Curtis.

    Hi Curtis hlw do you connect a keyboard to a zoom f8n pro?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I use the ZOOM F-Control connected to the F8n Pro and then plug the USB keyboard into the F-Control. Sadly, it looks like they discontinued the F-Control, but you may be able to find one used.
      Alternatively, you might contact ZOOM support. It might work if you can adapt the keyboard to USB-mini, but you'll want to first confirm that with ZOOM support.

    Thanks for all your great videos, very helpfull! Just wondering if you have tried to power the Zoom F8 with a 5v to 12v booster USB cable, you can get them for a few dollars on ebay, amazon and so on, and connect it directly to the DC in or with the Zoom Hirose adapter. Would be awesome if it was possible to use any USB powerbank with this recorder.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi whcvip, I haven't. I was worried that the conversion would reduce the available current and potentially damage the recorder at least when trying to power a lot of mics. I've heard of other people doing it but it sounded a little dodgy to me. Perhaps someone out there with a better understanding of electronics would have a better idea. Good luck!

    What if... you are doing fiction. Day one you shoot scenes 1 and 4; day 2, scenes 3 and 6; and day 3 scene 2. Is there a way to jump quickly betwren scenes or you have to reset manually each scene in folders? Thanks!

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @risbill1

    I recently purchased the F4 and have noticed after a few days of not using it that I have to reset the date and time even if I leave the batteries in it. Is this normal or a known issue?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Raymond, I believe that the F4 and F8 have a small in-built battery which keeps the time and date and when it wears out, you have to reset the date each time you power it on. It is not normal for it to stop working so quickly. I'd contact Zoom support and see about getting that addressed. Good luck!

    • @risbill1
      @risbill1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@curtisjudd just FYI Zoom did respond to my request and according to them and I quote "Unfortunately, there is no internal battery to maintain the date/time in the F4.
      If batteries are removed from the unit for more than two hours, the date/time will reset.
      I apologize for any inconvenience.
      "
      Mine seems to lose the date/time even if I leave the batteries in so possibly it is the cheap rechargeables I am using at the moment.

    • @curtisjudd

      Hi Steve, no, timecode would work nicely along side meta data entry and creating scene names to create sound reports, but doesn't replace any of this.

      On a big project I’d use the L12, many large projects now go into a mixer and then into a recorder say the f4.
