    Nothing sounds better than a Porsche flat six running hard. Nothing. It's the Goldilocks of sound. Never too loud or harsh. It's refined and it almost sounds musical. Creamy, turbine smooth. V8's sound great, so do V12's and so do straight sixes. But if you had to listen to an engine for hours on end, a Porsche flat six wouldn't wear you out.

    Great drive! Even a 3.4 991 is very fast and sounds amazing. I know the gt2 was taking it a little easy, but who wouldnt be. That car is dangerous. I bet you had a really fun time.

    a professional driver in 2001 needed for this lap 7.46 in a 996GT2
    same driver in 2007 needed 7.33 in a 997GT2
    on a 997 Carrera S in 2008 he needed 7.50, just a bit slower than the 996 GT2 in 2001
    esay to tell, that a 991 will be faster and beet the 996GT2.
    so dont blame the GT2driver too much, a 991C is much easier to drive.
    i use a 720HP-996 turboS, and its almost impossible to take over a 991.2 turbo, if there are some curves on the track.
    it shifts faster, it steers better, its PASM works much better, the turbo starts faster and so much more.
    i love the light 996, but its hard work, even more with rear wheel drive

    • @thomasbummer4361
      @thomasbummer4361 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      the time difference results much from the tires though, 996GT2 would be way faster than 997S with same tires

      Hello Roy, thanks for the kind words! My best lap with a passenger is this 7.46 lap from 2012 here: Nürburgring BTG 7.46 Porsche 991 Carrera 3.4

    Yes he was right behind us, he can do below 8 minutes BTG with the Panamera Turbo, yes it has PCCB and PDDC. It is very fast and works incredibly good at the track. This lap speed was more like 8.20 BTG without traffic I guess.
    Check my videos and you will find a couple of inboard laps filmed in the Panamera, and one lap filming the Panamera from my car. You can see how well the PDDC system works! The car has some extra power :-)

    • @dagjohnsen
      @dagjohnsen  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you,
      the tires were standard P zero, very good for the car. Better than Michellin Supersport. Standard brake pads. But bigger brakes rear (350 mm Turbo discs/GT 3 caliper) due to heating problems with the standard 330 mm setup.

  • @gmonsen
    @gmonsen 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Couple of things. PDK seems to help with using the power a lot. Made 350 seem more like 400. The other driver clearly was a novice. His lines were generally terrible. He seemed like he was on a Sunday afternoon cruise. The e36 was stunning and surprising in contrast to both your 991 and the GT2. Unless it was a sleeper with 400 hp and I doubt that. Liked the sound of the 991, but it has certainly lost any real mechanical character. Great motor, but like so many these days, doesn't have much intrigue to the sound. Very nice car though.

    • @dagjohnsen
      @dagjohnsen  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      study the M3 when I pass it, it is heavily set up for track driving.
      Special lowered suspension, heavy camber on the front wheels and for sure very sticky tires. Roll bars inside. So even if it is the 321 hp engine the interior is out and weight is reduced. It has a special exhaust, my guess is 340 hp.

      What do you mean? I personally think the motorbikes driving fast at the Ring are the bravest of all out there, and know how fast they can be.

      +Nicolas Joly Thanks Nicalas, , the car is PDK (AT), but I do all the shifting in manual mode with the paddles on the steering wheel :-)

      +Dag Johnsen Thanks Dag. The shifts are fast. No issues with your 3.4 as it seems it is a fragile engine. I am looking for one 996 model. :) Your gulf model is nice. Fast car. Enjoy.

      +Nicolas Joly I have drives the 996 Carrera4 a lot at the Ring, very good car. The 996 Carrera2 was actually a little bit more fun, felt more agile. The Carrera 4 a little bit more stable.For 991 I enjoy Carrera 2 more, actually better grip than the 4S on dry.Good luck getting a 996, it will make you happy!Dag

      +Dag Johnsen A C2 is tricky to drive it daily as it is only a RWD ? Specially during Winter.

    • @dagjohnsen
      @dagjohnsen  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nicolas Joly My C2 is very easy to drive in the snow, it has much better traction than normal rear Wheel driven cars, since the engine is above the rear Wheels. Where do you live? I live in Norway, a lot of snow!

    • @dagjohnsen
      @dagjohnsen  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      On the track I had 265 on the straight when that was open, if I go full speed through Döttiger Höhe I would reach above 270 on the speedometer, but I have to do it next time. Last time was my first full speed there and I did not take a chance :-) before Schwedenkreuz I have had 250 on the tacho, 241 in Fuchsröhre. At the Autobahn I have seen 302 downhill and 295 at the straights. The misreading is approximately 6 km/h for all these numbers

    Like the way all the armchair racers knock the gt2, he flies past a lotus, gets ahead of a fast m3. I would like to see all these guys post their own lap to compare.
    Your 3.4 really seems to fly though, my old 3.4 seems nothing as fast as this.

    • @dagjohnsen
      @dagjohnsen  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The GT2 driver is not bad at all. If I were him I would let me pass and then fight back. I always do if someone catch me, there is always a reason why they do. Sometimes I manage to follow, sometimes not. But at least I can learn from it :-)

    • @thomasbummer4361
      @thomasbummer4361 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      he was bad, u can tell from the lines he drove

  • @wurga
    @wurga 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Solid lines but you're basically too slow in most passages and lift off way too early. Otherwise you could've had him by letting yourself fall back and then catching him after a corner. Adenauer Forst, Ex-Mühle and even Hatzenbach can work as well as the entry to Brünnchen. Still he should've let you pass.

    • @dagjohnsen
      @dagjohnsen  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The early lift offs are due to the car in front slowing me down, and me not being aggressive during tourist driving. Take a look at some of my free laps without traffic, hopefully you like them much better :-) Here is my 7.44 BTG
      Nürburgring lap record Porsche Carrera 991 3.4 PDK 7.44 BTG, April 30 2013
      I probably have early lifts off there too, softer braking than many but good corner speed and good exits hopefully.

    • @joeracer302
      @joeracer302 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Brian Heiden I think the Euro E36 M3 had a 320hp engine, or something around that, with a 6spd MT ... but I might be misremembering ... I seem to recall that while it had more HP, it had really tall gears, so it wasn't actually that much quicker in a straight line than the North American M3.

    • @brianheiden6623

      Brian Heiden Yea, I also seem to recall the Euro car had maybe a different differential gear. This is just off the top of my head though, I'm too lazy to Google ... who has time for that ;)

  • @dougm1711
    @dougm1711 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Here's a 996GT2 from inside at Phillip Island in Melbourne, Australia. I've driven Nurburgring and it's awesome. Phillip Island is the best we have here. GT2 has 480rwhp but my first time on track so I'm like the guy you are chasing at Nurburgring, not pushing too hard in the corners and some strange lines and changing gear too early trying to ride the torque wave. Still hits 265km/h on the main straight. Great cars but the new ones just keep getting faster so not surprised to see a base 991 Carrera almost as fast as a 2 generations old GT2. Amazing engineering.

    Your 991 is a fantastic new car but let's be serious here, IF the driver of the GT2 were either better qualified to take his car to the limits or if he is capable and in the mood to race, your 991 would not have been anywhere near him, nor the Bimmer either. The GT2 is the pinnacle of power in the 911 series even if it is a 996 GT2, not a 997 GT2.
    The GT3 is an all around better set up for racing but the GT2 is simply a brutally fast machine and your 991 is no match for it with equal drivers.

    • @dagjohnsen
      @dagjohnsen  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Peter,
      HvS (Sport Auto) drove the 996 GT2 7.46. So it is 2 seconds slower than the 991 Carrera S, same driver. And yes faster than my car..My guess 8 seconds on a full lap. I admire the GT2 cars for their humungous performance :-)
      I would like the new GT3 for the Ring!!
      The Bimmer, I believe it had crazy tires on and possibly faster than any of us out there.
      My 991 has a very good balance and maximizing its potential is kind of easy, making people feel safe and better drivers. I really like my car and find it interesting fighting more powerful cars with it.

    • @thomasbummer4361
      @thomasbummer4361 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      dont forget that the laptime of the GT2 was set way earlier and tires improved MUCH so I bet it could be like def 10 to 20s faster nowadays
