    Finally someone who says what's needs to be said, explains clearly and on point. (Also lovely to listen to a sister amongst all the audio dudes!) Thanks Natalie!

    New voice actor in 2021 here. I stumbled on this video by accident when trying to resolve a bunch of issues that popped up recording with an XLR mic. I haven't even used the Izotope plugins and this instruction has gotten my workflow back to a beautiful streamlined easy production instead of the nightmare it had become (a Neumann TLM 103 can pick up the sound of your teeth clicking together inside your closed mouth if you don't set things up right) and it's fantastic.
    The plugins are worth it and her settings that she uses are a killer starting point in order to fine-tune it for your own voice. If you're unsure if this video holds up because the video is a few years old I can tell you for a fact that it's worth it.

    You're great at teaching this stuff. You should do more like this.

    Loved your tutorial Natalie! I primarily do on-camera work but recently have decided to expand my horizons with VO work. I already have a makeshift at home studio made but still need to acquaint myself with the technical side a bit more with processing audio. Would you say the Pro Tool Intro (free version) has the basic plug ins I need for the intents and purposes of cleaning up files for either auditions and/or submitting finished work to clients?

    Great Video, thank you. In some cases, I don't want to shorten the pauses by removing breaths etc. Have you ever tried to not shorten the pauses between sentences, but fill it with roomtone to just clean it? This function is one of the main unique features in Pro Tools or me. Copy Roomtone to the clipboard, make a selection where you want to fill in the roomtone and press "opt+cmd+v" (Repeat to fill selection). So the gap between sentences stays the same but is cleaned up with roomtone. Now you can grab the ends of it to definite the length of the pause. Additional, when you delete with cmd+b instead of x, the room tone in the clipboard stays the same.

      Oh for sure! I would say shortening the pauses totally depends on your personal preference and your client’s. I had a few clients for a while who required all breaths to be cut and that just became my default workflow for eLearning and commercial, but that definitely is less normal for things like games and animation. Replacing with silence is also a great alternative (as is this technique), I appreciate you sharing the workflow!!

    This is great. Just a note. A group is not a “file”, it’s just a group of regions. “Option shift 3” consolidates the audio into one new file. Doesn’t matter much for your workflow since you bounce it after effects anyway, but worth noting the difference for new editors out there :).
    Great vid!

      Oops! That was probably a slip of the tongue in trying to describe the group. Definitely did not mean to imply it was a consolidated file. Glad you enjoyed otherwise!

    Superb video Natalie. Thank you so much. I did my first recording today for my show reel. I invented an advert for a made up company to the backdrop of music. I live on the West Coast of Ireland so we have near silence here which is fantastic. I think the area I need to learn more on is what filters I should put on the spoken track, and also how loud that should be against the instrumental backing track. I recorded the vocals as a mono track and imported the instrumental track which I'm pretty sure is stereo.
    Am I supposed to make a master file? I know how to export and bounce into a wav but I'm scared I am doing something wrong and missing out a huge step before I have the finished product to add to my show reel
    Edit: It's an emotional track. I am going to work on soft and then hard sell but I wanted to get emotional done as it seems to come more naturally to me

    Hi, just starting to edit in ProTools and looking at this great video, please say how you move the recording track from right to left within the screen before every editing move...... don't know how to word this..... it's probably pretty obvious for you but for a newbee like me ! Many thanks ! Clo

      Hey there! No worries at all, this is a great question!
      I have ProTools set to "Shuffle" mode" when I edit just one track of dialogue like this because it shifts everything on the right side of an edit point over automatically. Typically, ProTools is set to "Slip" mode instead, where nothing moves automatically unless you drag and drop the clips manually. You can switch between these modes by clicking either "SHUFFLE" or "SLIP" in the box in the top left hand corner below the File and Edit dropdowns. (The hot keys are F1/F2 or ALT + 1/ALT + 2 if you need to toggle quickly between them.)
      I hope that helps!

      Thanks for your answer. Now, if your audio is quite long, how do you move your screen from right to left while listening to it ? Is there another way (smart key, mode or short cut) to move to the right than to clik on the right arrow at the total bottom of the ProTools window ? Thanks again for taking the time to answer me, I really appreciate it ! Clo.

      @@claudinechabot9525 You can scroll using either a horizontal swipe (on a magic mouse on Mac), otherwise Shift + the Scroll Wheel will move from left to right. You can also use "r" and "t" to quickly zoom in and out!

    Do you have a Protools tutorials for VO beginners and also what is your complete setup? Thank you very much for a great video, Natalie!

    • @NatalieVanSistine
      @NatalieVanSistine  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you found them, but most of my other tutorials are specifically aimed at beginners. If there is anything specific you haven't found yet, I'm always happy to consider suggestions!
      My complete setup is listed on my website in the Studio Highlights section of the front page: www.nvansistine.com/

    Hey Natalie, What is your actual VO set up? And also, is Pro Tools (free & Paid) compatible with Mac 10.11.6 "El Capitan"? Than you very much!

    • @NatalieVanSistine
      @NatalieVanSistine  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Luis! You can find my equipment list on the landing page of my website (nvansistine.com) - just scroll down past the demos. I have not heard of any compatibility issues with El Capitan and ProTools either - most people use PT with Apple machines and Avid puts a lot of priority into making sure they are compatible!

    Which plug-in should be activate before you start recording? Should you just record raw and adjust with plug-ins afterwards?

    • @NatalieVanSistine
      @NatalieVanSistine  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Recording raw is totally fine and what will happen regardless unless you have any outboard gear! You can apply the plugins on your inserts at any point, but they are always bypassed when you record so the effects are never "baked in" to your raw recordings. I always add them to my tracks before I start recording just because I will always use the same ones and know what I want applied ahead of time. If you happen to add them before or after you record it doesn't make a difference beyond how you prefer to work.

    • @CreativeBlue
      @CreativeBlue 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NatalieVanSistine Ah that's a bit more clear. I was afraid the plug-ins inserted before would affect the main raw audio. Maybe the exception would be the Gain level set up on the external Focusrite interface (or outboard gear as you call it). A gain level too high, for example, would damage the main recording. N'est-ce pas? Thanks for your video tutorials.
