There have been some good guest presenters since and the occasional funny but bonkers ones (Blessed and Shatner come to mind) but Angus was consistently good. Angus clearly deserved a couple of punches for what he had done but the relish with which Merton in particular delivered these actually meant Angus came over as the better person.
I grew watching this and loved Deayton as a presenter and was sad to see him go, but you don't understand this programme or people like Ian Hislop if you question their (him and Merton's) reaction to this scandal. Props to Deayton for taking it like a pro, but on a programme like this, they had to butcher him. Subsequent presenters get it rough for their hypocrisy too.
I agree that Hislop was just doing what he does, calling out hypocrisy. But after Merton's interview in Parkie I think Merton was simply tearing in into someone he profoundly dislikes.
Personally i think Angus took the whole thing very good naturedly. He knew what he was letting himself in for by being in the same room as those two after the story broke. And I don't care what you think of Paul, he's bloody quick! Love him as a commedian.
It's good to see people sticking up for Angus. We never know what goes through people's minds and how crazy a lifestyle gets. Depression affects so many people, it's not spline about enough. Stephen Fry was right with his comments on this episode. That being said it's still hilarious and Angus took it like a fucking boss
While it was funny to start with, it got relentlessly nasty but Angus got through it. I think the way the Beeb got rid of him and the way Paul went on about it was below the belt.
Did I've got news not continue with Angus after this show? I remember actually watching this episode when it was out... I can't remember what happened after... I'm here after watching Alex bellffields chanel and his episode on kay burley the sky reporter who got sacked for brekaing covid restrictions. He made reference to Angus deaton.
Even though it's hilarious, I feel sorry for Angus. All he can do is sit there and take it, knowing that he'll be unemployed straight after the show was recorded. Must have been pretty tough.

Angus was an amazing presenter of the show and was never really the same after for me, though they have had some great guest presenters. I don't know how well they all know each other and the ruthless ribbing was taken by Angus but it was a little too relentless and uncomfortable at times.
@Bla Bla YEah its something that might not always come across to us. I saw an interview with paul merton, where it was clear how personally he took it. Take it easy.
I remember seeing this episode of HIGNFY. I have a lot of respect for Angus, for having the guts to go out there. It's better than any public apology. That really showed how sorry he was for doing what he did. He knew that he was going to get slaughtered that night and he knew he deserved it. But I have to say that Paul and Ian (especially Paul) took it a bit too far. No-one deserves to be embarrassed like that on TV and the way that they both ganged up on him towards the end was terrible.
Guest presenter? How was he ever kicked off for this? He took it in good humour, gave his panel something to talk about and is no worse than any of the coach loads of reprobates presiding over each episode since.
+Sideshow Bob The media wouldn't leave Angus Deayton alone for weeks, as red top papers kept booking stories from the prostitute, and more was exposed. As a result, the show just wasn't working because Deayton was the centre of attention for ages.
+Sideshow Bob 1. He bacame the news rather than commenting on it, 2. Guests on the show would be able to use it against him. The fixed panel is supposed to have a spotless record that the guest's can't use against them. 3. Paul Merton really dislikes him.
+Adam Pardoe I understand and largely agree, spotless record, not so sure, but in any event to me it shows up the petty mindedness and heavily over-rated wit abilities of the sainted Paul Merton in not being able to move on (after a sensible period of putting Deayton through the wringer, which incidentally gives him Kudos when taking the P out of others. I mean, we had that witch Mrs Hamilton joining the band wagon as if her disgraced former tory MP husband was somehow no longer a bad man because a media levy was a dick. Not the same thing at all, yet the saville loving BBC thought maybe it was. Talk about poor judgement.) As for more and more being exposed, it would come to an end. Its not like he killed anyone - and even working through the karma sutra is finite. Probably interesting. If Deayton is censured for BEING the news, Merton should be retired for being as dull as dishwater.
Very interesting interview on this site between Parkie and Merton on why Angus had to go. Essentially every time he as a presenter made a good joke at the expense of a guest, based on their unacceptable behaviour as a public figure, they'd turn round and say yeah but look at what you did. So nothing was funny anymore. Won't let me post the link so search Paul Merton interview - part one - Parkinson - BBC.
The support for Angus in the comments is quite impressive. Ok so he’s a naughty boy, but we all have skeletons. He takes it well, even though Merton is pretty tiresome.
How can anyone say this is cruel? Angus revelled in others' misfortune/misdemeanours on a weekly basis... he was the news that week, so was fair game. He must have known what he was in for.
It went too far. Merton was wrong to publically shame him so often throughout the show. If I was Angus, I'd have clouted Merton after that! Deayton has far more talent than anyone else on that show, shame.
Yes. That was his job. Paul merton and Ian are comedians that commit their lives to taking the piss out of people. They show is "have a I got news for you." The entire press back when the broadsheet ruled the information age had cover to cover stories on their host Angus deaton.... you expect them to say nothing?
This is the great thing about British comedy - the ability to improvise with conversation (as compared to the Americans penchant for highly contrived dialogue and one liners) and their ability to laugh at themselves. Angus was by far the best compare this programme ever had. I remember my respect went up for him after his little flutter. Something most blokes would have done given half a chance.
I think it's admirable how Angus was able to take it all in such good humour... I think he was a bit pissed at the end but he still didn't ever get angry... He knew what to expect from them so he was prepared for it all really... I mean, when you compare this to the Never Mind The Buzzcocks where Preston walked off after five minutes because they were taking the piss out of his wife at the time, Angus is a big man for putting up with the ribbing
But the whole point of the show was to take the piss out of the week’s news. If they hadn’t done that, they wouldn’t have been true to what the show was about. Shame that Deayton had to leave though as they’ve rarely had a presenter who came close to his deadpan humour
You have to understand that Angus wife at the time was a long time personal friend of mertons they had known each other and been friends for years before she was married to Angus. I think Paul showed restraint considering
To me, HIGNFY was never the same after Angus was kicked off and went way down in quality. For the other 2 to lay into him like this, there were obviously behind the scenes professional tensions and rivalries between the 3, but that is perhaps what made the show so great, with them sparking off each other.
As Thatcher put it “This was Treachery, with a Smile Upon it’s Face - I was about to be stabbed, very politely, apologetically and deferentially in The Front.... And by over a dozen of my closest Cabinet colleagues, including many of most-trusted of my fellow Ministers, going about their butchery.”
On reflection, Angus comes across very well here, taking it all with good humour and self deprication. I was put off Paul Merton forever after he basically said he never liked Angus and thought he was boring, and his behaviour in this episode. I love HIGNFY but it really has never been the same since Deayton was basically forced out
I thought the same until I watched Merton's explanation for the effect it was having on the show and I agree, over the next 6 months it would have devolved into one long roast with everyone in England wanting a piece of Deaton's ass.
paul and ian only found out about everything about three days before this episode. as far as they were concerned their steady jobs were over. angus's indescretions basicaly were ending both of their careers, luckily that didn't happn and the guest host format took off. but look at the first post angus episode where paul hosted, it clearly wasn't supposed to be a long term thing. angus having a public affair basicaly fucked both ian and paul out of their one stable income (luckily hignfy carried on) but at the time no wonder they were bitter
It's amazing what you come across on youtube. Fair play to Deayton, he took all that was thrown at him. It's not an excuse but he didn't back down from it. He could have quite easily told producers he wasn't going to host but obviously he agreed to it. And yes, Merton and Hislop had a great time.
Tiwaz81 , +richardsfinalfantasy angus Deayton was a fair target but the obvious venom and personal grudge with which Merton leapt at the chance to twist the knife was just grubby and classless and dirty. When are the gang that vicious and spiteful towards the politicians they ridicule?
+kingjamie2 Precisely, while both of them been biting towards politicans on this show they've never been anywhere near as harsh as what they were with Deayton. It was one thing to give him a roasting but to do so to such a level where it dominated practically the whole show was flat out bullying. I was glad he wasn't ever totally allowed to get away with it when William Hague who was a guest host in a later show was able put him in his place when he commented on it.
+kingjamie2 Merton despised Deayton for years before this, they had been pissing each other off back and forth with escalating hostility, this was just the final straw I think.
@IIWII I don't disagree with what you say about Deayton it was disgusting what he did but Merton could have had a go at him in private, why do it on tv?.
I can understand where Paul Merton was coming from here. He was going through a personal nightmare in that his wife was dying of cancer. So he considered it repugnant for someone to disrespect their partner the way Angus did. And the person Angus was cheating on was a friend of Paul's, I believe. I'd have done the same thing.
you can say whatever you want about Angus Deayton, he fitted the role of presenter for this program perfectly! It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if the BBC would have just let things continue. I have a feeling with time it would have all calmed down, as with anything, and Angus may have still been presenting it to this day!
Anyone remember the episode after Paul Merton's marriage collapsed and he spent almost the entire show in silence, difference being I don't recall anyone taking the piss out of him for that.
CycolacFan Well that's rather depressing but happens to a pretty significant number of people, especially celebrities whereas taking coke and having sex with prostitutes is rarer and many people would say is much more of a choice. Anyway these jokes were at least pretty light-hearted, how do you make jokes about something so recent and awkward.
CycolacFan Rarely do HIGNFY guests take the piss out of someone for a marriage collapsing, why would they, that's just cruel. Deayton made a career out of taking the piss out of celebrities and politicians for scandals etc. Then he shags a prostitute, i don't have much sympathy.
The joke for years before Paul’s marriage collapse to Caroline Quentin was that Angus was having an affair with her. It was a running gag on HIGNFY. He wasn’t having an affair, but Paul didn’t find the jokes very funny so this was his revenge.
Looking at this now, with what the BBC covered up, it almost seems like a non story... and NOBODY was as great as a presenter of this as Angus deayton was.

I think that's very well put. Angus came across as the better person.
Dave Gorman is like the kid at school who hovers at the edge shouting “fight!”
I was diagnosed with Type II Bipolar two years ago, and it explains so much. You never know what goes on in people's private lives, despite how talented, professional and straight they may seem. Depression affects so many people, it's not spline about enough. Stephen Fry was right with his comments on this episode. That being said it's still hilarious and Angus took it like a fucking boss

Talk about poor judgement.)
As for more and more being exposed, it would come to an end. Its not like he killed anyone - and even working through the karma sutra is finite. Probably interesting.
If Deayton is censured for BEING the news, Merton should be retired for being as dull as dishwater.

Very interesting interview on this site between Parkie and Merton on why Angus had to go.

+kingjamie2 Precisely, while both of them been biting towards politicans on this show they've never been anywhere near as harsh as what they were with Deayton. It was one thing to give him a roasting but to do so to such a level where it dominated practically the whole show was flat out bullying. I can understand where Paul Merton was coming from here. He was going through a personal nightmare in that his wife was dying of cancer. the show died without him
Anyone remember the episode after Paul Merton's marriage collapsed and he spent almost the entire show in silence, difference being I don't recall anyone taking the piss out of him for that.
Paul marriage collapsing is entirely different to Angus taking the conscious decision to cheat on his wife with some hookers.
