I was there and I agree that right from the start of that AC/DC there was a different amazing vibe that lasted through the whole show. I wish phish would do more extensive fall winter tours again. There is something so great about indoor shows at that time of year. ❤ thanks mr Andy for doing your thing in the 90s many of my friends and I got our phish info from you back then.

12-7-97 is the best show to get new phans into phish. No jam is too out there, every jam is solid and super interesting, and a good range of funk to rock to beauty to space to covers. I always that it would make a great “live album” for phish (back when that was still a thing). Great episode guys.

Totally agreed. This was my first show and basically turned the light on for me with the amount of range and fluidity

Hi, could you please link resources about WHY you and your guests’ and viewers’ Phish show experiences were so profound, not just “it was fun” or “it blew my mind” or “these guys are so awesome.” It’s not that they’re only musically superior. Like can anyone just tell me straight out what separates Phish from any other jam band? Theories are fine.

For me as a lifetime rock and roll fan phish just had a sound and feel to their live shows that seemed to be exactly what I always wanted.

Thank you so much for answering me Binkie, I was waiting all day. I’m not the kind of fan you guys are; I only made it to maybe 5 Phish shows ever, but, simply put, my first Phish show (NYE 97) changed my life trajectory, extremely, for the much better.
I’d love to hear more from you or anyone else with insights on what exactly might happen. There is an undercurrent of deep meaning, that is sure. It led me unwittingly to a new level of understanding.

They masterfully play a wide range of music styles and have a sound that it is unique to them. Like an artist that you can recognize no matter what they paint. Lots of other jambands are typically great in one or two styles of music.

@@krapart thanks so much for your input. Well said. But still I feel there’s so much more to it than the musicianship. The more genres the better, I agree, but the way it taps into your emotions and plays them up and down, the way it seems to rap on the door of your soul, as though a deeper message from a deeper place wants to make you aware of something, THAT’s the element that makes Phish stand alone. Does anyone know what I mean?

@@lemmingpua5980 in some ways that is a direct result of treys mastery of composition. But I get what you're saying that it's more than musicianship. I think what you're describing is almost a meditative / shamanic type thing. I dont want to say it requires close listening from the audience, but it is available for listening on a much deeper level than much (but def not all) music. This close listening forces you to be in this moment. You don't sit there thinking about the last notes that were played or the notes coming up, just right now. And being present in the moment produces those emotions and experiences you're describing. What adds to it is that the band themselves are having the same experience, just trying to listen and be present.

Or, is that the thing? Are you still trying to figure it out?

I'm sorry to say but this podcast needs serious work, for such a dynamic and hardly stale band that phish is, their history (especially this 1997 tour) deserve better than this crumbled crouton of a podcast. The 3 standout episodes so far involved other musicians (Trey, Stasik and Brownstein). The cardboard copy reads intros suck any opportunity of life immediately out of the topics at hand. Tom seems hardly scholarly about live phish performances in general (for as many as he has seen). Apologies, but he seems like more of a songwriter/wordplay guy than one to talk about the nuances of exciting improvisational live performances. Both Stasik and Brownstein had so much more flavor and insight to add via story. Mostly what i hear from this podcast is uninteresting nerdy fanboy drivel simply looking back on youthful times now long gone. Bring in people with passion and who can actually breakdown a great phish performance with knowledge of the craft, musical intelligence and perhaps interesting stories to go along with (ie. Trey, Stasik and Brownstein). Listening to Benji's and other fan's show count and other nerdy conversations of geeked fandom are hardly interesting, and to my best guess are the reason why your podcast view counts are so low.
