The reason to use tools was because the manufacturer made the parts tight so that Robot form can hold pose, and don't feel wobbly, etc. This is kinda the case even with some of the non KO versions as far as I know.

A bit, but it stands on it's own pretty good. Just have to position the legs so the support it right. I have mine standing on my desk and it's never fallen over.
