Have you heard of Circuit no Okami? I know about this manga because of the picture of the Tomica gift set (I don't have that gift set, but I have Dream Tomica Lotus Europa that the protagonist drives), and it has an OVA that you can watch on TH-cam, but it doesn't have English subtitles
I thought I had never heard of it, but after looking it up, I actually recall seeing two of the cars before. In a Kyosho Mini-Z Autoscale booklet, I remember seeing the Lotus Europa and Lamborghini Miura SVR in it back in 2005. I’ll have to check it out sometime

Shakotan Boogie is aparently a good read, a few OVA's on youtube too that have subs
This manga kinda alternative besides from Over-rev which also focus on Woman MC, plus it's fan service for non JDM due to how many of European Supercars you see here, and btw the author is still Kia Asamiya still active in FB and plan to make another sequel of this manga, also this manga is very spicy
Over-Rev also does a much better job of explaining mechanical tuning and doesn't have plot armor everywhere.
So spicy. The latest series is "her Carrera GT3" ....The first sequel was RS, then the sequel to that sequel was GT3, perhaps the newest development would be GT3RS....?
It's pretty silly progression. And by GT3 you can say the main character isn't even Reina any more. She just comes and goes here and there.

Here's how I interpret the spending bill at the end of each chapter: Since our Reina is from a wealthy family and is getting used to driving an expensive car she's not used to drive with (manual transmission skill issue), she'll encounter a lot of technical issue and hence had to keep track over the bill. It has the realistic side of keeping a car in running condition, as well as exploring the technical side of the car as the bill varies from internal damage to gas refill. Gives you an idea how much to keep a car running and all.
This manga ultilizes spending money as part of connecting the character to the car, as the more Reina spends on fixing the car, the more she, and in correlation, us, gets to understand what she is driving, establishing the theme of "Car & Driver" relationship.
Edit: Typing this made me realized how similar this manga view this hobby is compared to My Dress-up Darling: Expensive hobby, passionate people, spiced with a bit of woman and lewd because why not. And I love both of them.
More often than not, the money is not spent on the car, but on the experiences (admission, highway toll, etc). It's more like the author's cheeky poke-fun at other car related anime where most activities seem free.
It’s not that expensive to keep an air-cooled Porsche 911 going. They’re pretty simple machines, especially Reina’s 964 gen. At least, it’s not that bad getting parts and service here in the States.
@@kabob21 the point is not how expensive to maintain the ride (even if what you said about not that costly is true, idk if shipping costs are different there compared to Japan), but that she's just getting into driving a technical car to operate, hence prone to run into problems and checks bills often. It's a bit of woman's mindset of matter and financial management, especially since she's from a wealthy family.
But doesn't the bill already gave you in detail how much to maintain the car + extra related fees already? It's literally in the manga.

did some research, the artist jumped ship and started kanojo no carrera RS as a sequel till 2015, and then started kanojo no carrera GT3 (still going on as a web comic) as a subsequent sequel in 2018.

Not gonna lie, the SZ is so extremely ugly that even the sonorous Busso V6 didn’t make up for it
The Japanese love their quirky foreign cars as much as we do, suppose this can be directly compared to our obsession for JDM cars.
I remember going to Japan back in 2017 and seeing an SZ in the Akihabara UDX parking lot, sitting right next to other rather unusual vehicles such as Rolls Royce Camargue, a Citroen SM and a RUF BTR 3 Cabriolet. Spending some time browsing Japanese twitter and TH-cam channels you start to notice a pattern among their foreign car enthusiasts, there seems to be a particular fondness for old French, Italian and British cars - Alpines, Renault's, Citroen's, Lancia's, Lotus and Catheram's are almost always present.
is that not an RZ? you can see it's a cabrio so it's not an SZ
I would highly recommend OverRev. Still reading it. It’s slightly more focused on the life of the MC and girl shenanigans but I still enjoy it. I like shojo over shonen so its perfect for me.
Initial D is still very good. (Only seen the anime) I only wish they would invest more into the characters themselves but it still works out overall.
What I sorta notice is that a lot of manga about cars and racing like Kanajo no Carrera never really got even a slight attention from countries outside of Japan. Manga like Naniwa Tomoare, Osaka Mad Family, or King are also in the same situation, with almost no proper translation on the internet. Few exception like Dri-Cam has translation for some reason and you can technically read them online.
I guess at the end of the day, manga about cars or any extremely niche topic doesn't generate a lot of readers from the oversea so people won't make any effort translating them. Even if car enthusiasts take some interest in it, many of them may not want to delve too deep into the weeb rabbit hole and they only stick to anime like Initial D and Wangan Midnight.
Basically yeah. It’s a shame manga like this doesn’t get much attention, but there’s really not a whole lot you can do about it.
There’s also the fact that drawing and animating cars and motorcycles are just way harder, making anime adaptations of these works way more expensive thus limiting the exposure of these hidden gems even more
@@MordecaiGTR for kanokare the issue is that it wasn't popular enough even in Japan. Kia Asamiya has other animated TV series not at all related to cars that outsold kanokare by 100 to 1. It was doing so bad that Playboy Magazine (Japanese Gravure centric mag that has manga only as a feature not a mainstay) couldn't support continuing the series after tankobon 28. The following S and GT3 switched publishers but they, too, couldn't support the money burning act of publishing this.
multiple spinoffs were made centered around Aika, and Itasha with transformers ish theme (himegami gadget) with lots of lewd didn't save the main line.
But a manga about an 8 year old girl who draws porn and isn't blood related? Same day color scanlation in 8 languages.
@@KevinJDildonik One of the reasons I stopped reading manga and rarely watch anime. It’s mostly isekai, high school age and fanservice, all of which I find completely uninteresting. I’m a millennial and that kinda stuff is corny and/or juvenile.
I don't usually comment on videos, but somehow YT algorythim brought me here and loved every second of it, as an initial D fan i'll took note of the manga and with the rest of the comments it help me to remember the existence of over rev, which i've loved back in the day. Keep the good work!

I love cars, I love Porsches and this manga has been on my to read list for a couple years. I found it randomly through Pinterest and fell in love with the cover art. Nice to know its well appreciated in Japan
I did see the asterisk when you said Wangan Midnight was a more serious manga, but please give the Wangan Midnight manga a go. There's plenty of downtime when they're not racing. On MangaDex, there's a revamped version from the beginning with high quality raws and the works. Also the Countach manga is getting more translations.
As an Initial D and Wnagen Midnight fan and a car guy myself if only knew Japanese, I would translate it. I'm have a MA in translation studies for English
I guess Porsche doesn't care enough to give this series a shoutout? Toyota probably sees Initial D & now MF Ghost as free advertising.

Porsche is pretty traditional. Heck, even Polyphony Symphony could license their cars for Gran Turismo.

Damn. I forgot all about this. There used to be a anime/manga store in my area that ended up shutting down due to Covid restrictions (2 years ago?) that had all the mangas for this in stock. I had no idea what it was and only noticed it because it was lumped together with the initial-D and JDM car magazines. I think they even had all the sequels, etc. too because I recognize some of the cover art shown in this video. Like the OP says I remember trying to use Google translate camera option on my phone to read the kanji but when things get technical it becomes a word salad that made the storyline difficult to follow😢. I was debating whether to buy them because they were very pricey (everything was marked up in that store) but I was denied…

@@kabob21 not everybody likes the same stuff I guess. But to me a 911 in rubystone red is my absolute dream car. Ever since I have seen one in real life. The colour was so deep and it looked like 5 or 6 different colours depending on the angle of the light. And in-between all these white, black and grey cars of this world a goofy magenta-pink (which it definitely is, can't argue with that) stood out like almost nothing else and not even in a "look at me" kinda way, like a neon green Lambo but still in an elegant and somewhat understated way. But I like colours like ultraviolet as well, so maybe I'm just weird...
@@kabob21 Porsche has a large number of paint options which can be specially requested (including a choose-your-own color option). This manga is based around one of the most coveted 911 models, in a pretty rare and infamous color. This is like, the 911 as a shiny pokemon.

I remember when this came out, read the first 3 volumes that were translated, been waiting for the rest ever since. Same issue with 'Over Rev!'
Well, this manga is really good and also the 2nd manga that introduced me to the supercars and modern JDMs, including Porsche 964 (Reina's ride)
Sure it had some "decent scenes" in here
I think this is the 2nd manga make me fall in love about Porsche 911 (964), while the first one is Wangan Midnight by Michiharu Kusonoki
I also recommend this and Over Rev (which is similar to Initial D but with girls)
I’ve read a little bit of Over Rev. It was good, but I guess I kind of missed the comedic moments Kanojo no Carrera had. I’ll probably pick it up again sometime in the future.
@@MordecaiGTR The issue with Over Rev is that it's not supposed to be a comedy. It's about an athletic girl who lost her chance to compete due to an injury and somehow found her passion and raw skill as a hashiriya with her AW10 MR2. Slightly like Initial D but more down to earth.
Kanojo no Carrera is different. Kanojo no Carrera is about a girl who literally got "gifted" a 964 whist being a new driver, didn't know anything about cars and somehow fell in love with the car and then went on a whole exploration on how to enjoy her 964. Thus Over Rev! doesn't have that comedy effect of a bumbling girl who knows nothing about cars at all to go around and finding everything about her own car.
Like another commenter said, I'm also not one to really comment on every youtube video I find, and this video really should hit more people. I lost interest in Initial D pretty quickly due to the lack of comedy boring me to the point I stopped watching it (though I may give it another chance at some point), and comedy SOLs are much more my thing even as an extreme car guy. Thank you for this content, will absolutely check out as much as I can about this manga!
My only regrets reading this was learning that this only has 28 chapters translated in english and not learning any Japanese/Mandarin.

Watching the covers with all these amazing sports cars, then in the middle there is the smile of the Twingo. The manga artist really knew great cars.
I'm definetly going to read this one bummer that there isn't everything translated because I'm a car guy and a weeb so when these two cross I usually love it (Initial D got me into anime lmao)
Unfortunately, a lot of racing manga isn’t very popular, which is why this one flew under the radar for a lot of people. It’s a shame because it’s really good!

great piece! I read the early bulk of stuff that was released 5-6years ago some time back. It has a special place in my heard along with a somewhat similar story about a girl getting a First-gen MR2. I would honestly love to see more of it someday; though the character designs gives me 90s-2000s vibes the car art is so beautiful. I like the cheeky experience with Reina and you sort of go on this journey with her since that sort of car certainly isn't a toyota nor is it a 'rich man's paycheck' something like an older, air-cooled 911 model with a factory rollcage is akin to a homologation special which is truly a connoisseur's ride.

ngl, the only thing I remember from Kia Asamiya is my complete set of JUNK: Record of the Last Hero which is a Seinen series published by DrMaster. His characters are very distinct in design and it's very hard to forget mangakas that love cars, the original is still Kōsuke Fujishima (You're Under Arrest, Ah! My Goddess, Ex-Driver and etc).

Not sure if maybe you might know, I tried to watch a couple episodes: there’s a car related anime called _Ex-Driver_
It may be not as dynamic as the other popular ones but it is relatable by the fact that the setting revolves around true drivers vs _AI_ & autonomous cars in the distant future. Which is what is happening right now in real life to some extent.
I’m actually familiar with that one! I watched it back in 2017, a time when I had little to no interest in anime. From what I remember, it was decent. I appreciated how despite being a car anime, it felt very different from Initial D and Wangan Midnight.

I actually knew about it under the name "My dear Carrera", which I believe was the name used in a fan translation back in the day.
As someone who's in a sim racing hyperfixation, this is right up my alley, thanks for the video!
I remember reading this manga last year and wanting more of it so bad, I hope that the rest gets translated and hopefully, into a physical form as i love this series (and Porsche's ).

As I mentioned in the video, I typically don’t make a whole lot of commentary style videos. Usually when I do, it revolves around myself. I wanted to make this one because I became unusually passionate about this manga and wanted to spread word about it. Also because I wanted to see if I could help the series get picked up again on Mangadex. But I still find myself making videos like this from time to time

The way the mangaka draws the cars are borderline erotic (?) If that makes sense/ like the way he draws the vehicles are so well designed that they outright look better than the real things. They have this sense of style that reeks cool, sophisticated and badass. It’s copacetic in the best of ways.

@@jackezzpanzerI used to be a huge F&F and Cars fan when I was younger. Cars 2 was a mess, but one thing I liked about it were the racers. They all looked so unique, and Shu was one of my favorites. So when I found out her last name was Todoroki, I thought it would’ve been fun to throw him in

Probably worth my time, This is exactly what i wanted, it seems like its a good interactive candidate for learning japanese for me, be it either familiarizing myself with the words or probably trying to work on an english translation, but im unfamiliar with how people go around doing good translations in the community, besides i can do this on the fly with my E-Ink tablet.
As far as translating goes, i guess using google is one way to try and get a brief explanation in english, but to adapt the right english phrases to a speech bubble and to be in line with what the creator wishes to convey is a certain mindset indeed, one i have been told im good with, but i lack confidence when it comes to manga and stuff cos as with most people, i dont know japanese, but if anything i would likely prefer to read it well than to speak it well.
I might mock up something on the chapters, i dunno if this is going to get me to translate and dictionary search, could find this theraputic tbh, ideally its best to work with a native to try and get this stuff to work. i have no idea.

Ive seen the 1/43 model car pops up on ebay from time to time. I found out about the manga from my love for Porsche 964’s.

I remember how i get up to this manga back in 2021. I finished re-reading Initial D on MangaLib (russian analog of MangaDex), when in "similar" tab i saw this one. It had only 11 chapters (and still does) but fell in love with it. But everyone is just reading ID or WM and nothing else, still thinking about fan-translate it to Russian atleast to 20+chap since i don't know Japanese just for fun.

One racing manga I always wanted to read was SS, apparently being all about rallying, the main character driving a Group B Mitsubishi Starion. Being a massive rally and Initial D fan it seems like the perfect blend for me lmao.
I just finished the first anime season of MF Ghost, which I REALLY enjoyed. But as a Porsche owner, I wanted to see if there was any manga or anime that revolved around Porsche, and "My Favourite Carrera" came up on Manga Planet. I know it's highly unlikely, but I would LOVE to see an anime adaptation of this series at some point in the future. And considering it has some recognizable success in Japan, it is possible in a way, but i'm not holding my breathe lol

Ooh someone else knows this Manga! Nice, subbed. Gotta say though, to spite liking this manga my self I find my self going back to Over Rev! more often than it. Don't get me wrong it's lovely, but Over Rev! has a bit more charm.
Yeah a lot of people in the comments have been telling me to read Over Rev. I read a little bit of about a month ago. It was decent, but I guess I kind of preferred Kanojo no Carrera. However, I definitely will pick up on it again when I get the chance

I read My Favourite Carrera on manga planet 2 years ago and actually liked it, I even re-created the 964 in both FH4 and GT7, great manga but similar to Over Rev! Focus of female drivers and eroticness, lol.
Can I get the FH4 share code for it by chances?...I also got the same idea as you but you beat me to it haha, I might be getting another cars in FH4 and slap it for this series
@falcoscontrollare4552 I created it with using vinyls that aren't sharable aka downloaded in FH4. Not gonna be possible to actually download it, but I do have her car recreated in Gran Turismo 7, the *actual* 964 is in that game.
Plus, there's plenty of options to make the car more accurate like in manga itself in GT7.
