- I'm taking a break from my Sonic character profile video series to explore a recurring storyline from the British Sonic the Comic, published in the 1990s by Fleetway. Stay tuned next week for another profile!
"Tails' Adventures in The Nameless Zone"
In this video we'll be taking a look at the Nameless Zone, a zone that Miles 'Tails' Prower calls home in Sonic the Comic. It's a fantasy-inspired zone brimming with monsters, magic, goblins and plenty of other foxes! In this video retrospective I'll be running through all of the times the Nameless Zone appeared in the comics. For a specific story arc, check the timestamps below. This was also an excuse to use some awesome Golden Axe music in the background too.

One thing I find pretty humorous in hindsight about the Fleetway Sonic comics is how it foreshadowed just how complicated the game lore would later become. In the Fleetway series, it seems like everyone in the cast originates from a separate realm or dimension (Tails, Robotnik, the Chaotix, etc.); whereas currently, the games have been trying to convince the fanbase that both the Classic games and the human world have always been separate worlds.

To be fair, Sega never planned past the Mega Drive/Genesis for its Sonic games. So chances are they are just pulling stuff out of their ass and trying to make it legit.
@@RedTygon Oh, I know the reason. I just find it funny that it seemingly predicted certain creative decisions that the game developers would later make.
Unleashed already proved that the sonic world and the human world are in the same world
@@charmingmagican9821 Yeah but they are trying to make the setting as bland and boring as possible it feels when they could have gone on a different path.
Given how insecure Sonic is in the Fleetway comic if anyone's seen to be cooler than what he is, along with how he puts Tails down at nearly every turn with the name "pixel brain," I don't see him being too thrilled when hearing that HE was the sidekick to Tails. Also I think it'd be more than fair to say that Knuckles seems to care more for the little fox cub compared to Sonic does, what with him being a good sport and playing along for Tails' sake.
I wonder if the writers had plans to have Sonic go to the Nameless Zone and flip out about Tails' stories..?!

Ngl, the Nameless Zone sounds like a good set up for a Tails spin off. Imagine a RPG staring Tails and his assistant Sonic (Knuckles) as the they go on random quests

In the Sonic The Comic Online story with Morgan in, she still thinks that Knuckles is Sonic.
In the Archie comics, Tails' parents were in space, and when they came back, they tried to overthrow the monarchy

Although after the adventure games Tails ( my favorite character ) didn't have a good time in franchise , it's great to know that in cartoons and comics his character was handled well
Fleetway comics did a great job with giving tails his own adventures and I really appreciate that but still tails lack of confidence was really annoying . And sonic X and IDW comics did a great job as well ,
But in my opinion Archie Comics did the best with tails and used all the potential tails has
In Archie he started as a kid that wanted to be like his hero and them became his sidekick and then even learned to be a hero of his own and having his own sworn enemies and became a great hero without self-doubt but never became too proud of himself . He was a one man army before the super genesis wave . And finally became a god , I know the hole Titan Tails thing is ridiculous to a lot of people but to me the fact that it was Tails that was chosen to save the multiverse not only is cool but also makes sense , character like sonic and Knuckles and shadow were stronger but sometimes we're too proud of themselves and Tails was the only character that was power full enough and had the kindest heart .
Sorry for the long comment , I can't stop appreciating tails great moments in other media in a time that he just gets disrespect in the games

It’s golden axe? I thought the background music sounded familiar
Sega should adapt this part of Tails’ history into the games and give it a new back story to fit with the main series canon.
Why? Because he’s been done dirty in the Modern Era after Unleashed with his depiction in Sonic Forces being absolutely atrocious beyond belief and he is a character that deserves so much better than that. Something like this could do such wonders for salvaging his character and show those naysayers that Tails ain’t a useless sidekick character they like to believe him to be.
Plus he’s already been in three spin offs of his own and had his own comic mini-series, the latter being something that Shadow still doesn’t have despite being the second most popular canon character according to an old survey from nearly a decade ago.
Before anyone says Tails couldn’t hold his own adventures or a spin-off series by himself, Jimmy Olson, Lois Lane, Robin and Batgirl would like to have a word with you.
Great comment, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I feel like Knuckles has been done dirty in more recent games and shows and stuff as well. He's another character with so much more to offer.
@@JohnnyVector Oh, Knuckles is his own set of problems.
Tails for the most part is bad in the Pontac written games while having better depictions elsewhere but Knuckles post-Archie just seems to get the short-end of the stick these days and has very few avenues where he gets to be his more level-headed self that ain’t thick-headed nor have his personality based on two very specific moments in the games.
It’s like that awful Archie issue time where an OOC Sally slaps Sonic across the face and a good amount of fan writers more or less based their characterisation off on despite it being from an era where the Archie Sonic largely seems like a fever dream of eh ideas, interesting moments or general pretentious writer stupidity after Endgame Saga.
I like how this version of Tails is betrayed as a close friend instead of sidekick. He goes on his own adventures and is pretty much independent from Sonic but when he partners with Sonic he pretends to be the sidekick because man Fleetway Sonic is a jerk. I do think Sonic does start to respect Tails and treat him as a equal near the end of the comic though sense he calls him “old buddy” and starts worrying about Tails putting himself at risk like when he punched Super Sonic. I do like that he graduates from a sidekick in this comic but he can’t really show it in front of arrogant Sonic.
Yeah, good points. Towards the end of the comic Sonic does become less of a jerk and respects Tails more.
Yea Agreed but Tails did reveal himself to not need anyone’s help in issue #121 and Sonic was jealous, he even says “ I can’t give him the idea that he can do without me” like he wants him to stay a sidekick forever lol

That's definitely because fleetway sonic in the early days was a real jerk
I thought so too, and it wouldn't matter how many times Tails saved Sonic's spikey ass, it'd always be the same old "Pixel Brain" name he'd call him. Personally I believe its due to insecurity on Sonic's part, and how he looks to put Tails down to try and make himself feel better, like most bullies do.

Haha yeah, I'm not sure what Ken Penders pre-Sonic career was like but Fleetway's writers had experience working on kids comics so they knew how to nail ideas that younger audiences loved.
The Fleetway Comics seem so interesting from how you describe them. I really need to read them!

It's an interesting contrast with Tails' and Knuckles' side stories on how Tails' are set in a fantasy setting and Knuckles' sci-fi background.

American Sonic Comics = Echidna characters

I’m surprised Japan has yet to create a whole race of Sonic characters based on Hedgehogs.
Amy, & Shadow came the closes we get for a Hedgehog Race.
OK, last comment. But I got to say, Arin trying to beat that dragon on the Black Knight is one of the funniest GG sonic moments ever. (That and FROGGY!)

the morbidden hunt story (specifically part 2 of it) was the first stc comic i ever read (the main sonic story was metamorphia pretending to be a green hedgehog)

Tbh Fleetway Sonic is my least favorite interpretation of him. While it’s kinda funny to see him be a bit snarky as he can be in other media, he was the most mean such as outright insulting Tails when Sonic in other forms of media never really does and actually supports him more instead of pushing him away and calling him useless and a “pixel brain” or whatever. But that’s just my opinion really. Everyone else in the comics seem pretty well written for the most part. The Nameless Zone is bizarre, but it’s more interesting than Ken Penders’ story for Knuckles.
I agree with you. I love the Fleetway comics, but Sonic's character is a bit too mean-spirited. Knuckles was by far my favourite character but I appreciate Tails and Amy's solo adventures too.
Hell yeah, Morain! I actually have the original ink page of one of the goblin lords pages heavily featuring Morain on my wall, I think it's the one immediately following the one shown at 12:35. One of the Nigels (Kitching, IIRC) told me he really liked her as i bought it, though I was too much of a dork to say anything except agree with him (plus he was probably busy, at least that's what I tell myself). I remember really connecting with Tails' character in this comic when I was young, I loved him so much. It is, generally, my favourite portrayal of him, though I also liked him in the Adventure games. Adventure 1 even deals with similar themes in regards to him coming into his own as a hero in his own right, if I remember correctly... it has been a while since I've read these.

For sure. I like the majority of the artists who worked on the comic. Nigel Dobbyn and Richard Elson were my favourites.
Oh god fleetway. I’m glad but also sad I didn’t touch these, it’s kinda weird. Like, really weird. But it’s so confusing, especially since nearly all he personalities are changed, and the story is just…weird, I know I’ve said that like 7 times. It’s a fun story! Made for a great video!
Haha, Fleetway definitely coloured my interpretation of the Sonic cast growing up. Tails and Amy in particular had some really weird adventures but I'd argue that Amy, in particular, was portrayed in a much more interesting manner than she has been in the games.

I remember loving Sonic the Comic as a kid, though now I barely remember most of it. It's nice to see these retrospectives about storylines I only have vague memories of (didn't Tails also have a cyberpunk-ish style solo storyline called Zonerunner?). It's interesting that his profile basically calls him stupid when in the games (and IDW comics) he became a genius almost on the level of Eggman.
Would love to see your take on Amy, Tekno, and Shortfuse's storylines too. I think those were among my faves.
Personally, I found the Dimensional Bridge an interesting concept when I reread the comic recently. Like, literally crossing to another dimension and below the bridge is a Non-existent Space or just Void. Tails and Knuckles were able to cross it somehow but eh, I can go with it.
Btw, I've never noticed this strange thing in the comic until now but how was Knuckles able to fight and defeat a Full Emerald Powered Guardian Robot? Like seriously, they made it very clear that it not only absorbed the Master Emerald but all the Chaos Emeralds aswell. Those stuff were able to power Super Sonic in the Running Wild Arc and God Robotnik. This is something that I noticed once I reread it again, that's weird.
I'm sorry but those characters created for the comic don't really fit the Sonic franchise but the story is kinda interesting.
Haha fair enough! Most of the writers and artists worked on comics like 2000AD so they probably wanted an excuse to sneak some fantasy and sci-fi storylines into the comic and decided to do so in a weird zone separate from Mobius.
I liked it and the fact I was around Tail's age when I read the comic helped me connect to it, but it always annoyed me tails dind't have more of a characther arc. Like it becomes publicly acknowledged he was never a sonic type hero, but he does heroism his way, while he doesnt have sonics speed or brawn, he has flight and a cooler head
Sega should make a separate series of Tails games that play completely differently to the modern sonic games. Like that game gear game, Tails Adventure. They should make a 3D puzzle platformer starring tails. It'd be great. Maybe even have it be a Tails + Knuckles game and both of them play differently. Although I suppose that's getting into Sonic Adventure territory. But I just think it'd be cool, since the vast majority of sonic games over the last 20 years, you can only play as sonic. Which is just crap. Playing as different characters is what made the classic games fun. And why every romhack seems to add a new character into it. I've played so many romhacks of sonic 1 and 2 that star Shadow the hedgehog, with a whole different moveset and all. Sonic Mania Plus really really got it. Especially in Encore mode. 5 different playable characters, who are all very different to play as. Ray the Flying Squirrel is my new favourite sonic character to play as.
And so obviously now there's Romhacks that add Ray and Mighty into the classic sonic games, because of course.
I would love for SEGA to do another Tails or Knuckles solo game. I think it'd allow them to explore things that they otherwise wouldn't in a Sonic game. Nintendo pulled it off because Luigi, Wario, Yoshi, DK and to a lesser extent Toad and Peach have all had successful spin-off games and series.
Sad part is they considered it in a old 2005 pole. Never happened because of the disappointment of Shadow’s game.

Seeing all these different interpretations of Sonic’s lore just makes me crave some sort of Sonic cartoon or comic that implements aspects of previous Sonic continuities into one unified continuity; sort of like what the 2012 TMNT cartoon or the IDW TMNT comics did. The reboot Archie comics are the closest we’ve gotten to that.

He grabbed Tails's tails from the side of the swamp and pulled Tails out. It wouldn't be until issue 127 that it was revealed that Sonic had learnt how to swim.

It had such an ugly artstyle. At least until artist change. Also no reason to assume execution. Nothing in particular suggests that world is so overly dark and the enchanter king shows no fear of such punishments and all he did was be affected by magic, which nearly every named character was in that arc.
