A tutorial that's quite in-depth, not just how to create a shed in SketchUp but also the various tools a beginner would need. I jumped into the program with no training and after following through on this tutorial, I can move comfortably within the app for the most part. Thanks for the upload.
***** Thanks for the great review of this tutorial series. That was exactly my goal of these videos. I wanted anyone to be able to follow them, even if they are just using SketchUp for the first time.
Thank you for this series, it is helping to learn much more about a tool I have played with since it was released, but have never really done anything with it, because I could never find a tutorial that showed me how to do what I wanted, in a concise way, that didn't exceed my lack of knowledge in computer drawing.
I've learned so much from your Beginning SketchUp video series and this one as well. THIS video alone teaches many small tidbits that massively improved my ability to use SketchUp effectively, so thank you for this!
@Noah, You think your late?? I am 5 days behind you. I have used AutoCad since 1991 but always just for 2D drawings. Now, I am trying to catch up with the times. I find MasterSketchup a very helpful and most knoweledgable instructor and look forward to the next tutorial. Thank you @MasterSketchup....I would also like to let you know you can always look up torrents.
Thanks, I have always wanted to use Sketchup, but other tutorials never showed me what I wanted to do. Within the first ten minutes of your tutorial I had enough information to get started on what I need to do Right now.
Great video! I am using SketchUp to design models for video games. Your tutorials have taught me everything! Thank you, you are an amazing teacher! Please continue making these vids
Great Video, easy to understand and the explanation of the the different tools and functions of them were east to understand as well. looking forward to part 2!
I'm a cabinet maker and I do a lot of custom built-ins for clients. I've been wanting to buy some sort of cad software for a long time but they all seemed either too expensive or too difficult to master or both. So I was very happy to discover sketchup. Thank you for these tutorials. They are amazingly helpful. But I don't see anything specifically about multi purpose cabinet design. I saw the one about crown molding but would like to see some that deal specifically with cabinet design. Are there any, or will there be any soon? Thanks. And keep 'em comin"!! 👍
When you're moving and you want to separate by 16" (center reference), I've found that starting the move by clicking on the center of the joist and typing 16" does it the best (Rather than clicking on the corner edge). This will move the joist 16 inches to the next location.
It actually doesn't matter where you reference the move from if you're going to be typing in a fixed dimension. In fact, you don't even need to click any point on the joist as long as it is selected ahead of time. Just click anywhere to start the move, lock axis by dragging the mouse, then type in the dimension and press enter.
Great tutorial! When modeling carpentry projects, do you ever keep components around that represent standard dimensional lumber (2x4, 2x6, 2x8") so that you can "pull another board from the pile" and cut it instead of modeling new boards from scratch?
Steve Hoge I like the concept of having a library of profiles or components that you can use over and over. But honestly, for simple things like 2x's, I find it's not worth it. Moldings and casings are a good example where it would be worth it. Check out Profile Builder extensions.sketchup.com/en/content/profile-builder-2, even better.
Great lessons, thanks, Question: When you multiply your floor joists times 5, I am not able to write in the measurement box. Is there something I am missing ?
travlinpartner Select the joist. Activate the Move tool (tap M on your keyboard). Then, tap CTRL to tell SketchUp you want to make a copy. Click once to start the copy, move the mouse and click again to finish. Then, type in 5/ ENTER to define the array.
MasterSketchup, Thanks for your reply. It's been awhile so I went ahead and studied more and learned that and many other things in this amazing program. Again, i really appreciate your lessons and response.
Can you upload the sketchup file somewhere (like mega.co.nz)? There are a few things I'm not sure on, and I would like to double check with your work. Also in the end you created some beams or something, but you sped through that part and I was wondering if you could explain it some more. Joists hold up the floor (in this case plywood), but would do the beams do? Also your beams look off center, is that intentional?
growingfuzzybeards That's not a bad idea. I'll put it on my to do list. I'll probably create a page right on my site for it, and host the files as a direct download.
Can’t someone please explain to me what he skims past in the last part, around @18:20 where he talks about making the beams? I am not a builder so I cant comprehend what he is explaining. Want to make sure I am doing it right.
Hi, wow I noticed that you replied to every comment, I think that's very kind. I just wanted to ask if I can do this on the standard 'Google sketch up' not the 'pro' version. And how much does the pro version cost? I've wanted to build a shed/man cave for a while now and your videos seem like the perfect way that I wanted to start my project. Can you please help me with a tutorial on a bigger green shed e.g. 5m X 5m X 8ft height, lots of glass or transparent roof maybe facing slightly towards the sun so less electric bulbs are used, insulated walls to keep heat indoors, fresh water collection for all purposes, and maybe even self generating electricity like wind or solar. This is an ambitious project which I AM going to do, unlike other projects I would like to do a sketch up first and would really appreciate your expert help as a tutorial similar to this one as I have only just downloaded sketch up and don't know how to use it yet. I would be soooo happy and grateful if you showed me. Thanks again for these great videos. Hope to hear from you soon.
Shaz Demon Hi, yes, you can do all of this in the free version of SketchUp, called "SketchUp Make". You can download it at www.sketchup.com. Check out some of my other videos for tips and tutorials.
Hi, I just subscribed to SketchUp (2019). It has different appearance as your version of SketchUp, but all the tools are the same right? Is there a way to see the construction in elevation (front, side, floor plan)? Thanks.
Yes, all the tools are the same. Can't remember which version I recorded this in, but I think the icons were updated a little bit since then. If you go to the Camera Menu > Parallel Projection. And then Camera Menu > Standard Views, you'll see several common views like front, side, top, etc.
@@Mastersketchup Thank you. I'll check them out. Great tutorial. Easy to comprehend. Last question: Is there a tutorial where you work from pre-existing floor plan/elevation? Sorry if I'm asking too much.
Blackgold67 You can't add objects to the Outliner directly. Instead, it shows you groups and components that exist in your model. So just triple click an object, right click, Make group. You'll then see it appear in your Outliner Window.
Ok. So... I'm very late into this... I was able to get this part done... as a newbie, I was happy and excited... but... the sketchup free web thing doesnt have grouping... and very glitchy. I cant fins info on this. As a person learning, am I wasting my time with the free version? Seems like Im being pushed to buy a subscription... to learn??
Hee Matt...Online 30 day Trail version of the SketchUp is really Frustrating....cause it gets stuck after i follow your tutorial, it needs to update the system every time....really this forces you to buy the program !! This is obligatory in a sense because you might not know if the program is something for me.!! But so far I like it because you can really do a lot with SketchUp Pro. What does the SketchUP Pro cost actually?
russell lowe Arbitrary! Oh man, I have a hard enough time limiting my use of the word "Ya know", lol. Didn't even realize how often I used arbitrary. Thanks for letting me know. You can see more info about Pro and Make at www.mastersketchup.com/everything-need-know-sketchup-2015/
ive subscribed to your youtube channel and rely heavily on your website, just want to say thanks for taking the time to put all the hard work into them,i wouldnt have a clue how to use sketchup otherwise,by the way ive studied your tutorilas so much that im now saying arbitrary all the time, never heard of the word before hearing you say it,i made sure to google it first tho so i knew what it meant.lol. thanks again,bud..
i am having a little trouble with the part where u copy and move the plywood i made the group and colored it just like u did but when i made copy and moved it would not let me do second move to add the 1/8" space it like locked them together can u please tell me what i am doing wrong
Sammy Steele Whenever you're moving something a KNOWN distance, the important thing is to just move the object along the direction you want it to go. THEN, after you've moved it, just type in the distance and press enter, and it will correct itself to the specified distance.
This is a great video if you don't suffer vertigo. I felt quite sick from the zooming in and out and rotations. Other tutorials don't seem to jag the tools as frequently. It does make a difference for the viewer. Sorry - want to see more but feel like I need to let you know ;(
Kheitah Mwangi When moving an object, make sure you tap CTRL to tell SketchUp you want a copy. Then, once you've clicked to place the copy, type in 4* to make 4 copies.

Great Video Series. I am using them to teach my grade 10 construction class framing before we build a model of the shed. Nice work.
Thank you so much! I literally had no idea how to start when I installed it. Your videos are awesome and clear :) Greetings from Hungary!

You are a real pro of sketchup & excellent instructor. Thank you.
Excellent tutorial. This will help on my Tiny House build.
SketchUp is perfect for designing a Tiny House.
Fair enough. I forgot to mention though that the plywood intended to be used is tongue & groove so that's not necessary.
Absolutely love it. Thanks so much. Big thumbs up.

Don't let the fancy features intimidate you. Even just the basic tool is actually easier to use than the follow me tool.
Incredibly helpful. Thanks.
So many good tips! Thanks for sharing!!!

Great, thanks. I'm new in Sketchup, I build playhouses. What about a deck tutorial? I think I'll get your book.

great video but i just open mine an still learnin but where do u find the mesh plug in an do i have textures in already or do i have to load them ?
well i just found my textures i am so dum
lol, no problem.
Awesome sauce.
i like your session i follow them .tnx
Nice tutorial but I do have a question, I am trying to align the group I have made to the axis but I am unable to do so... any tips on how to do it?
A more accurate way to divide the joists along the plywood would be to copy from one end to another and then divide by X. (Move, Ctrl, Click, /6)
Thanks, for your share
What was that option where you were able to cut through the shed? Is that a plug-in? If so, where do I get it?
Michael 10 Can you tell me what time in the video you're referring to?
It was at the start of this video. Thanks for replying but already found it, it was the Skalp plug-in :)

Not a carpenter. Any good sites to learn about "why 1/8" in? Is that for kerf? Is a 4x8 sheet of plywood actually shorter like 2x4s?
It's for swelling

'You can use fractions or decimals for your measurement'. Yeah, think I'll use metric instead ;)
dude, you are sadly mistaken, it doesn't matter if its metric or not, you can use fractions or decimals
this video could be half as long but he fills in so many words (thats thats thats thats) al he says
Wait, why do you put the second piece of plywood 1/8th inch away .-.
You typically leave a gap between sheets to allow for expansion/contraction when you install it. In reality, it probably wasn't necessary to model it.
m, cm, mm? Heard of those?
Why spend all that time with the rectangle tool? Just use the Housebuilder plugin. Way faster and easier.
man i am a newbie but this is too slow. great but slow. cant speed it up on chrome cast.
