- I walk you through the steps involved in replacing the VST Filter on the Evinrude ETEC Outboard Motor. This VST filter is often overlooked when performing maintenance on the Evinrude ETEC Outboard. Since the VST Pump and filter are critical components for reliable ETEC operation, cleaning or replacing the VST filter is recommended every 3 years or 300 hours of service. Mine was definitely dirty and needed changed.

hey buddy i left you a big like and i will share this out on my community tab for you.
Much appreciated
Another very awesome video! Thanks for taking the time. You've really saved me a lot of money
Always great to hear that these are helping others
You did a great demonstrating n explaining the VST filter replacement .
I wondering about fuel leaks coming the area of the VST ? Before taking it apart . Are there any common problems . It is a small leak .and doesn't effect the motor running , your thoughts before taking apart ..
Depends on the leaking area...IMO any fuel leak could cause an issue and be dangerous.
If it is simply from the hose or connector, it should be a simple fix. However I do know that the older style VST system housing was prone to leaking as well resulting in needing to replace the VST.
Great video! Where can a person get this filter?
Order online...Crowely Marine or Barnicle Bills are good sources.
excellent video got a link for the clamp an tool? I was planning a high quaility reusable fuel injector clamp I assume the line is 3/8"

@@1Cast1Fish when you screw into the filter doe's the screw ruin the filter being removed? like if mines clean can I reuse it?thanks
You can, if you screw it in very lightly and pull...if it comes out easily then it probably can be cleaned and reused. However they are pretty cheap to replace. I just like knowing a new clean one is in there since you have alot of work to get in there to it already. Plus if you do have issues or it's messed up you want a replacement on hand.
Great video and that vst replacement seems pretty easy. Should this be done sooner than 300 hours because it’s so easy? I just hit 100 hours on my etec 115hp. I try to do most of my maintenance once a year and those include a lot of what you have etec videos for like this one.
I would say that 300 hours is a good benchmark and if you do it annually that’s probably fine.
Great video, what is the hour count on your Etec .
Off the top of my head, I think it's coming up on about 300 hours on this one. I spend most of my time on the trolling motor, so my maintenance schedule tends to be the 3 year cycle on the ETEC.
Nice upload
Thank you so much 🙂
Can the VST filter just be left out all together?
I would highly advise against leaving it out. Without it you will be bound to have fuel issues at some point as the contaminates are freely pased through. Definitly worth replacing...the filter is less than $10
great job friend..always succes
Thank you 👍
hey, great etec videos. i just bought an 150etec 2014. could u do a video on rigging a etec? mine has icon electric controls
I am not a dealer, and honestly hope I never have to do a rigging video...lol ...that would mean my motor broke....lol. Sorry I can not help you, these video's are intended to help with DIY maintenance.
Hi got a 50 etec took mine out it was the same thing black and dirty after change it put everything back on and still idle good when I go backwards runs good but when I go forward it stalls
Have you checked for faults and codes with the diagnostic software?
So what do you think is the problem trying to finger it out even change the spark plugs I use the motor to get bowhead whales
Is the throttle cables and idle set correctly?
@1Cast1Fish i never changed it right after hunting bowhead whales my niece went out hunting bearded seals it stop and no power to go forward or backwards but it would idle okay
@1Cast1Fish after changing the vst filter the backwards would work ok but forward would stall
How do you air (when been fuel) on hose put it out?
When you turn the ignition key to "ON" ...not start...you should hear the fuel pump and such start (to prime the system) The VST has a vent that takes care of air. I do this a few times and no issues. I don't even prefill the fuel filter anymore.
@@1Cast1FishThanks...
Okay!! Where is the VST filter located on a 2015 115 e tec with Carter system?
Should be located in the same spot...it is hard to see and the side covers need to come off to get to it easier.
Are these motors any good looking at 2015 boat with a 115 evinrude
Yes the motors are great, however as with anything...it depends on how well it was taken care of, fresh or salt water, maintenance or previous issues? I would recommend anyone looking at these motors to simply get it checked out by a competent mechanic who can pull the codes and history and do general checks on the motor.
What would be the same for an E-Tech 200 horse
Yes a G1 200HP should be the same filter/strainer
Thanks for the advice, do you have any for the e tec 60 HO 2020 year ? Took in for service last winter and now that the warranty is up plan on changing the lower unit myself and fuel filter and plugs. Only has 42.50 hours on it so far.
I have no specific videos for that particular model, but many of the videos should be a good match...like lower gear unit oil, plugs, and fuel filter
@ thanks so much
My ETEC 115 has the following issue. After idling for a period of time looking for fish and bottom cover with my electronics, the primer bulb gets soft (lack of fuel in it). If I then start my engine and try to get up on plane she will stall because of the lack of fuel in the line. I then squeeze the primer bulb until it’s full of fuel again and once the engine starts it will run fine at full speed. Would this VST filter cause this or should I look elsewhere? I am not a mechanic but I could probably change the filter without having to drive through two states to find someone who will work on an ETEC.
Start with easy stuff first...Replace Primer bulb, Check anti siphon valve on fuel lines, Hose condition?
What is the part number for the filter
Best to look up the part number for your specific engine...not sure if they are all the same.
Were can we get one
Ordered mine from Barnicle Bills Marine Supply, came in the 300 hour service kit.
Can you run the ETEC without replacing the VST filter? It seems unnecessary with the onboard fuel filter on the top of the engine.
Considering how dirty mine was, I would always do it as a precaution, due to its location in the fuel system and VST. If left, it will eventually cause an issue once dirty enough. 3 Years or 300 hours is a pretty good amount of time...plus part is very cheap.
My vst filter is stuck; are there other methods in removing the filter?
Never heard of one being stuck, if you over tighten the screw you could possibly start biting into the VST nipple not letting it slide out. Very tough to figure out without looking at it...are you sure the filter is there?
The screw is the best and only method I have used and seen used.
@@1Cast1Fish Thanks for the fast response. Yes, the filter is there and it moves a little when I pull on the screw however, it will not come out. I will try again this weekend when I get some time.
Good luck, biggest thing is to be easy on that VST nipple, they are prone to cracking.
Hello Paul, would it be possible for you to give an opinion on what my Evinrude 175hp engine does?
When I accelerate it to 1500rpm it maintains its rotation but at 1600rpm it starts to accelerate to 4500rpm on its own, what could this do, I've already changed the spark plugs and lubricated the entire mechanical acceleration system.
Thank you in advance for your attention.
Thanks
Daniel Veterano
I am not a Evinrude mechanic, but might want to look at the TPS sensor...may be something with throttle control. Do you have the Evinrude Diagnostic Software?
Part number for the filter?
I would look it up for your particular model of engine...I am not sure they are all the same or not...hate to give the wrong # to you. Check Crowely Marine
Hi. Does all Etec engines have VTS filter
I don't want to speak wrong as I don't have experience with every model and HP. I would check online for a parts breakdown for your specific model and serial number to be 100% sure.
Have an etec 50hp, runs well wide open then when I slow down he engine begins to hesitate and loose power. If the cause the VST or fuel Line bulb?
It could be many things, do you have the diagnostic software to check for codes or issues?
@@1Cast1Fishis there a aftermarket tool I can read my evinrude for issues? 2008 115 etec. I just started having issues with the primer ball going soft and motor bogging etc. I’m trying to research what the probably might be. Anything I should look at first? Thanks
@fishinfever3577
Look on Amazon you can buy the diagnostic software for around 60-75
Anti-siphon valve, fuel pickup screen, or tank vent possible places to look

Anti-siphon valve, fuel pickup screen, or tank vent
Software on Amazon about 60-75
Do you have a link to the filter?
I do not have a link, I have found them online, but they are not always in stock. I also get alot of my ETEC parts from Barnicle Bills Marine...tad bit more expensive sometimes, but great service on the phone to ensure you get the correct parts for your specific model.
@@1Cast1Fish you’ve saved my boat. Local dealers won’t wrench on it now. It’s up to me with your support! Keep up the great videos.

ETEC owners gotta stick together
@@1Cast1Fish is t his on the 115hp model too ?
Hi i don't have the diagnostic software I am in a small village
The Software would help alot as you can see Realtime data for the motor. Problem is it could be many things...here are a few places to start
Plugs, are they gapped & indexed properly
Fuel, any restriction, crud in lines or filters
Control cable adjustment
TPS calibration (Need software)
👍👍👍
Thank you
