People Can say whatever they want about Mariah Carey but you can never deny the musical genius she is, she merged a Pop boyband, an RNB Singer and her unique sound and created this gem and not only that made it sound good. I pray she gets the musical recognition and people realise how much she has done and contributed to music, to the industry. Girl was mashing genre's before it was even a thing. I think singers are still doing this. It's just that audiences nowadays especially teenagers prefer loud music, very pop and dance, vulgar and mostly invested in music videos. Maroon 5, Mariah Carey And Britney Spears True.... But back then MOST artists had to actually know how to sing, instead of just shaking the booty for the camera.
Now days things just seem off. There have always been just "okay" singers who use sex appeal in order to gain record sales, but it was balanced with other popular artists (ie. Whitney, Mariah, Barbara, Aretha, Linda Rondstat, Bonnie Rait, etc) who DIDN'T resort to that and just used their vocal talents, and they were just as popular as well. For every Madonna, there was a Patti LaBelle.
But now days?? The balance is off. We now have the more "popular" artists being the ones with so-so voices, but who use their sex appeal to sell records. It's now to the point where even singers who actually SING very well eventually get pressured into resorting to the shaking the booty and using sex to sell records these days smh.
In fact, aside from Adele, I can't really name too many current popular artists (female) who don't go that route eventually at some point in time. :(

I was there in the audience in Minnesota when this was filmed! I have such amazing memories from this show! Cant believe I got to see these artists altogether! I was 17 or 18 years old, it's fuzzy now but I remember being overjoyed at the time for the opportunity and experience! One of my first concerts!

I just love the TONE of mariah's voice on the word "My" at 03:37 - 03:38 - its so full yet raspy - it sounds like its going to break, but it doesnt and yet has so much resonance. Her voice is just so nice to listen to when she belts, which to me is far more pleasing than whistling.
The first part was near the top of her belting "chest voice" and then, as you wrote how it sounded like it was going to break, that is when she switched to her "head voice". It was a combination of two vocal tones. ☺️
