when they filmed this in 1978, Ridley Scott was Fiming 'Alien' next door, in Shepperton on the bond stage. The Who possessed the only blue industrial laser in the country at the time as they were quite big machines, They lent their laser to Ridley and that same laser is the blue mist covering the eggs in the film

The" quiet" Entwistle is at the bass!!! This performance at the Shepperton Studios 1978 is mythical ! They were known for breaking their instruments and playing with the most powerful sound!
This is Keith Moon's last appearance with The Who...
It was in 1967, at the "Holiday Inn" in Flint; Michigan, after a "wild party" for his 21st birthday, that Keith Moon drove his car into the pool!😢

They were way ahead of everyone else at this time including Zeppelin who I saw many times and who never showed the intensity of the Who in live performance. The Who reigned. They were also the loudest band I have ever seen but the sound was clear and sharp.Great stuff, great rimes!

Working class heroes, pissed off at every one and every thing, hated the system and the Monarchy and not one single fuck to be given the entire time; The Who were Proto-Punk, whether Punk wants to admit it or not

Many punk bands were very influenced by the early Who. They were considered the grandfathers of punk.

Something cool about this gig is, a young Chrissie Hynde from the Pretenders was in the audience. Another cool thing about this gig: the film Alien was being filmed in the studio next door. The cast and crew of Alien went over to watch the performance by The Who. They were so impressed by the laser show at the end of WGFA that they borrowed the laser equipment from The Who and used it in the Alien film. So next time you watch Alien, be sure to keep an eye out for The Who's lasers.

It was Moon's last performance. He tried to knock the drums over at the end but they were nailed into the floor.

The lasers were used in the movie Alien. Which filmed in the area at the same time this was shot.

John Entwistle (The Ox) on bass. "The hypnotized never die; Do Ya" and "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss." Great performance.

Legend has it that this is the 3rd take on this song. The director was unhappy with the first and second takes, He asked Pete to be more animated. Pete was pissed off at having to do it again and went over the top this time.

Rory, to really appreciate The Who at their peak, you need to go back 8-9 years from that performance and check out "Young Man Blues" from the Isle Of Wight festival in 1970 or anything from Woodstock or the London Colosseum in 1969. They are relentless.

There's no mistaking The Who. No question mark after their name, unless it's a comedy bit! No one COULD be mistaken for them, so unique and powerful and Ablaze with Rock they were! Love your understated "I'm guessin' that's got to be the end of their set, then" comment, lol! Since I hadn't seen it in your playlist, I'd been jonesing for you to react to this iconic song. Then u said u already knew it, but that this killer live version was new to you, so: COOL!

The Shepperton show was done because they didn't have concert footage of Baba O'Riley and Won't Get Fooled Again which they were happy enough with to be in The Kids Are Alright film. They were asked to play WGFA again because the first take wasn't energetic enough. The band wasn't happy about this and their reaction to that request was this performance.

Just a couple things about Ringo on bass... aka John Entwistle, voted bassist of the millennium. He potentially contributed more to the live who sound than any other member and was a true pioneer of the instrument. There is an isolated bass video of this performance and is worth checking out if you want to see the work the man is putting in. He actually did tour with Ringo's all-star band and there are some exceptional videos!

Coke is a good possibility for Townsend, he started taking acid in '67, and quit the same year after a big dose got to him. He also is the genius who wrote the music, and programmed and wired the synths to make the unique backdrops of Baba and Fooled, so he's also getting off on the music that was his vision. Search TH-cam for how he did it, IIRC, he had a wall of individual synth modules he connected with wires like an antique phone switchboard to add each effect. Oh, and Moon on the drums is wearing headphones that allow him to stay in time with Townsend's synth parts, which had to be recorded ahead of time so he could play guitar live.

Pete was so hyped in this performance because it was filmed for the rock movie 'The Kids are Alright' and the director wasn't happy with the previous take - not enough energy or something. So Townshend reluctantly came came out for take two and made sure there wouldn't be a third by going well over the top in every way.
