#1 Gear: Most of us have cameras that are better than our skills. Most of us are not able to use the full potential of our cameras. As soon as I reach my camera's level I will upgrade my gear. The most difficult part in filmmaking is making films.

Good stuff, I'd also say, for most people, the difference between a $1k camera and a $10k camera can be minimal if you understand lighting.
And another thing that tends to get overlooked is audio. People will overlook average image quality if the audio is good. But give them poor audio and they wont watch your perfectly shot footage from your expensive red camera.

Depends on who you are asking. If it's an art-house director, story and creative direction matters most, gear can come second if not third or fourth. If it's the DP of a big budget studio film, gear matters. Some of my favorite movies were shot on bare minimum (Clerks, Tangerine) so to me it doesn't matter. Problem is is that people tend to get gear obsessed instead of focusing on the basics of story telling and film making.

I just got a bmpcc 6k and once I used it for the first time I truly realized that what people were saying about gear not mattering was total BS. My take on the gear doesn’t matter line is that gear matters you need gear to create however having the gear itself won’t make you a better creator or filmmaker. It’s your knowledge of the techniques and the gear that will allow you to make better work. If you don’t know what you are doing shooting on a 1DX or a Red will make little difference cause your knowledge of the techniques and craft isn’t there. You don’t need the most expensive gear to make great work but you do need gear and you more importantly need to understand the gear you get

I rarely agree on literally everything in a video but man this is all so damn true! Especially the first point that gear does matter definitely resonates. I can honestly tell that the biggest jumps in quality and knowledge I made were when I committed on buying a mirrorless and later on a cinema camera. I once read an article that it is way more effective for you to grow into your gear than the other way around and I can wholeheartedly say that this has been 100% the case for me.
Don't get me wrong, learning and understanding the equipment you got definitely makes all the difference but it's way more difficult to learn about something you've probably already outgrown than to learn about something that is "above" your skill-level lol

I think I've learned that for gear, the biggest difference between cheap and expensive is how well it holds up. A $1000 light may have the same specs as a $300 light but it holds up after years of use. For cameras, sometimes cheaper gear works better for the project. Example A7IV vs. Red Komodo on a wedding.

  • @alexalexis7899
    @alexalexis7899 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That “gear actually kind of matters” is spot on if you are working commercially - for a paying client, it does unfortunately matter what you show up with to do the job, be it either the brand of your camera and lenses (a lot of people book gigs just because they own REDs) or, quite simply, how your camera rig looks. If, however, you are focusing of doing docs and fictional narratives for portfolio and to submit to festivals, trying to kickstart a career in traditional filmmaking, then, given how homogeneous cameras have gotten, gear doesn’t really matter. And this brings me to your point that nowadays it is very easy to close the gap between a beginning filmmaker and an established filmmaker. An established filmmaker hopefully has much more going on for them than simple teachable knowledge, because if it all came down to stuff you can learn online, them everybody would be extremely articulated with video, and that is definitely not the case. Out of the hordes of filmmakers that exist today, you’ll be hard pressed to find someone who clearly stands out from the rest. And when they do, it’s because of their taste and sensibility - and those things not only cannot be taught but take quite some time to learn by yourself and to be properly developed.

Very good points brother. I agree. Thanks for standing with me against the “gear doesn’t matter” myth. Although, I’ve seen people with more expensive gear that produce lower quality products, which means, like you said, it’s important to understand your gear. If you don’t, you could have the best gear in the world and still not produce quality content.

Brandon, you have to approach it from another angle. Gears matter, but which one? In addition, under a budget constraint which one will hold good value over time? I think when people say gears don't matter, they meant using the affordable camera gears to build up the skills first and then decide which gears that will best be suited for a certain line of work.

There are several movies shot on Dslr cameras and look great 👍. Red and Alexa are not necessary. Story, light 💡 and sound is the most important. Red looks totally different from Alexa but that doesn’t make either one ☝️ better than the other. If the camera shoots in the frame rate you want and does all that is required to tell your story is a great way that’s all that matters…

Good video. Gear matters a lot but also the skill of the DP is important. I learned decades ago that bottom feeder clients looking for a DP primarily to get a free camera are best avoided. I learned cinematography from Sven Nykvist and Conrad Hall was a dear friend. They did not own the cinema cameras they used on productions. A few of us had 35mm MOS cameras like the Mitchell for shooting tests on new film stock, but the cameras used for features were provided.
I remember how surprised I was at the “industrial “ quality of production cameras, with military grade connectors and switches. If a production is paying for A-list actors, permits, insurance, lighting/grip and crew down time or footage loss is catastrophic. Murphy’s law is always lurking.

I've never shot a video period but I do know gear does matter because if you don't know the quality of gear you're getting just like LENSES, your shots going to be boo boo of you get bad lens. Like for instance if I get a cheap 50mm lense 9 times or out of 10 it's going to have a two aputure settings hence forth will darken the shot then brighten it when using it BECAUSE it has 2 aputure settings and not one. I haven't bought anything yet but now I'm prepared to get my camera after 2 weeks of straight researching I'm going with the Black Magic 6K Pro and yes I understand the battery life sucks but I now know what to get to extend the battery life and that camera will work for what I'm needing. Getting a Ronin RS2 for my gimbal though I'm not feeling too easy on that decision because of some of the reviews. I'm thinking on the Sigm 24mm-70 Art lens and Canon 24mm-70 L Series still looking into that must check a few more things then I'll decide and will get the 50mm EF Prime Lens so I can start shooting right away. There's more things to purchase I know just didn't want to list them all.
    P.S
Putting my short video together now so I'll have a project to shoot when I'm ready to shoot one.

I agree with the "gear matters" bit for sure, and I dislike how some youtubers indeed rant on about the fact that gears don't matter "as long as you have the SPECIAL skill to work out some magic". Wrong! Gear DEFINITELY matters!!!
The one beef I have with you (having seen one or two other videos of yours with similar topic) is that you seem to have a hefty appetite for charging a lot to your clients. You don't mince words about it I know, but some things really don't need to be sooooo expensive as you make it. Everyone these days try to charge so much yet put in so little. A quick way to cash in I'd say. Off-putting!!

"Better Gear" does not always equal "better output". It helps, in some ways, sure, but teamwork, creativity, solid workflow, planning execution... these are all things have a better chance of equaling "better output" than "better gear" 6k will not make you less lazy or get you the client (not a worthwhile one anyway,) dynamic range won't write a better script for you and LUTs won't teach you how to record better audio. The reason youtubers go around saying gear doesn't matter is because they didn't hit their quota for Squarespace that week :p
