The 1990 49ers should be on here. 14-2 team going for the three peat as two time defending champions. They lost to the Giants in the NFC Championship Game 15-13. 1976 Steelers. As everyone knows, they were known for their defense in the 70's and won 4 Super Bowls because of it. However, the 76' team was the best defense. They started the year 1-4 after Bradshaw got hurt. After that, they went on a 9 game winning streak. 5 of those victories were shutouts. They only allowed 28 combined points in that 9 week span. Their starting defense also had 8 Pro Bowlers that year and 4 future HOFers. They are at least the best defense to not win a Super Bowl

Yeah, if Franco and Bleier don't both get hurt (both of them were 1000 yard rushers that year) the Steelers win that AFC championship game against Oakland and would have had a good chance to shutout that Viking team. That is considered by some the greatest defense ever. When you look at that nine game run, no other team has ever come close to those defensive numbers. For that day and age they were a complete team with a dominating run game and an overwhelming defense.
The 1976 Steelers should have been near the top of this list.

Best defense to not win a super bowl was the best defense of all time, the 69 Vikings. The defense only gave up 7.5 points per game and they gave up 1.465 yards per play less than the league average, both the best in history. The second best defense to not win was the 70 Vikings who gave up just 10 touchdowns all year.

      @jaxonwoods8181 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@QuartzGolem the 2010 Chargers also infamously fielded the worst special teams unit in league history, which is the sole reason they missed the postseason. They also lost to New England (albeit close), and didn't play the other three best teams in the AFC that year (Pittsburgh, New York Jets, and Baltimore), so their stats may have been different had they played those teams. They were superior to the Chiefs, as I'm still not sure how they managed a 10-6 record that year.
In all, the Chargers from 2004-2010 should have made at LEAST one Super Bowl appearance. Funny how the years they were expected not to get far ('07 and '08) they actually made some noise.

The Giants had been the most effective team against the Patriots all season and just seemed to line up perfectly against them. @@dchenkin02 and yet no one was hotter going into the playoffs. So the whole "shoulda woulda coulda" thing is crap. The Patriots BARELY squeaked by the Giants that last regular season game and lost the big one - so whatever they did in the regular season means nothing . They lost to a team that played better throughout the entire playoffs. Excuses mean nothing . 18-1 is their record and they lost when it mattered most . And how did we NOT have a dominant defense when 23% of our defensive snaps ended in an offensive turnover and only TWO TEAMS managed to throw 300+ yds against us all season . People also forget our RB corps ran for close to 2000 yards. Our d-line also had 37.5 sacks that season - so in whose book isn't that good? If anything our record didn't reflect how good our team was - then we beat them again 4 seasons later. So it wasn't some fluke. They lost because they felt entitled to the win. Brady's comments before the game shows that. They thought they could score at will.

"28 was the only fair one. And in that game, they just barely lost." By 15 points in a scoreless second half, barely lost my ass. "The Giants QB did nothing." Backup QB because Simms got injured in a Bills game (since you're so quick blame teams for that). Even then Jeff had the TD pass, not Kelly. "advantage to win 26 cause they wouldn't have faced the oilers who gave Kelly the concussion" They didn't play the Oilers in 1991 and blaming a string of injuries to Kelly on them getting beaten by the Giants in the SB a year earlier is ridiculous reaching anyway. And they wouldn't have had the advantage anyway, because the Redskins were frankly better. The 91 Redskins are generally ranked as the best SB winning team ever. And even then it's not the Giants fault Kelly is made of glass. Also I like how you seem to think the knee injury cost them 27 and not the 52 points their defense allowed. Yeah, better offense might've offset that slightly, not enough to make it not pathetic. "they would have won 28" No evidence for that. The reason the Bills lost is obvious, they're team and staff were well rounded enough to handle the superbowl contenders NFC East had at the time. But I guess it doesn't matter the Giants defense had one of the best ppg averages despite one of the hardest schedules ever, and in form held the Bills below 20. It doesn't matter the Redskins had one of the best +/- teams ever in points and turnovers. It doesn't matter Elliot Smith ran for 100+ yards in two consecutive SBs nor does it matter that even when Kelly was there and setting completion records they couldn't score in the second half. All that matters are injuries that are everyone else's fault in a butterfly effect and everyone has to let the Bills play however they want "like men".

It would've focused on the top 10 teams that fell short once they got there. Less than 6 months after I sent my email, this show aired. True story. The 1975 Bengals lost to the Steelers twice and the Browns but beat the very tough 10-4 Oilers twice, and also the Raiders and Bills in the regular season. 11-3 and featuring the game’s top passing attack, they were stymied 31-28 in Oakland in the first round.
The second team would be the strike shortened 7-2 season from the 82 schedule. That team had probably the NFLs top receiving Corps with collinsworth Isaac Curtis, Steve kreider ML Harris, and dan Ross in the mix and a bevy of talented defenders and they won six of their last seven. But that only loss was a 50-34 crushing at the hands of the chargers, an evil harbinger of the first round 44-17 humbling at home against the Jets. I thought that team was going farther.

But Cunningham broke his leg in the first game. Their 3rd string QB lost 4 games. @tempest20000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Spineshot25 I agree. But they lost because of themselves. Rodgers didn’t play the last regular-season game and I think also having the bye week made him a little less sharp throwing wise than he should’ve been if he had played. Also the defense was poor. They did have some really good players like Tramon Williams and Nick Collins and Charles Woodson but as a whole, the defense was not very good. I really wish this team would’ve gone to the Super Bowl, I was really hoping they would.

kyle - You made a good point. But let me emphasize. That defense was worse than poor. They were terrible. I am not sure why they only gave up 360 points. That defense gave up 6585 yards. They only had 6482 yards gained themselves. I am being sarcastic on the yards gained. It is a lot. Anyway one of the worst defense ever. That is with a team that had possession of the ball a lot. I think the question we have to ask here is how they actually went 15-1. Not how they lost to the Giants. Because if the Giants did not beat them they would have had a lot of trouble the next week against the niners.

Harry Engel In my mind, it would have been a clash of giants and styles. You got the Vikings with the track meet with Moss, Carter and Robert Smith with Randall Cunningham’s resurgence. Then you have the defending champion broncos with a 2000 yard rusher in TD with Shannon Sharpe and another guy in the middle of a resurgence in John Elway. We missed out on one of the greatest Super Bowls of all time and considering how the 98 Broncos could be seen as one of the greatest teams ever, it’s a fascinating matchup

1972 Dolphins had a ridiculously easy schedule, the combined record of their opponents was 70-122-4
Only two of their opponents had a winning record (both were 8-6) none of their opponents on their schedule made the playoffs. People say Earl Morrall was lucky when he replaced Griese and won 11 games, but he was a veteran QB that backed up Unitas, Tittle, Fran Tarkenton, and Griese. All HOFs.
They were a great team, but their opponents only had a .367 winning percentage.

The Buffalo Bills beat the New York Giants during the regular season in 1990 in Giants stadium the same year they played the Giants in the Super Bowl. In 1991 the Buffalo Bills played The Undefeated Chicago Bears and put a whooping on them 35-13 to hand Chicago their first loss, Chicago would go on to go 11-5 that year. Buffalo routinely had success against NFC teams when they played them. Let the grown-ups talk about teams that we seen play young kid.

Brett Favre is an all-time great QB, my man. He definitely had a couple of head scratching post-season INTs later in his career, but, prior to about 2001-2002, he was always known as the Comeback King and would pull out the win far more often than not. Moreover, his play was often the sole reason that his teams even made the playoffs once the 1995-1998 super squad crumbled around him.
Regarding the team itself, the 2009 Vikings definitely should be considered a missing ring. Second ranked passing attack in the league due to a rejuvenated Favre, best RB in the game, good defense...they had it all. Moreover, they outgained the Saints by over 2:1 in yds and only lost because they repeatedly shot themselves in the foot. 5 total turnovers (only one of which was really Brett) and an idiotic "12 men on the field" call is the only reason why the 2009 Vikings weren't in the Bowl.

Not to mention the Viking's historic offense actually had the ball in overtime and couldn't do anything with it, when it only took a field goal to win back then. Then the defense let Atlanta go down the field again and get a field goal. Seriously, the WHOLE DAMN TEAM CHOKED. Anderson choked, offense choked, defense really choked.
