Shrikes are songbirds and in the U.S.(which is where I'm guessing you're from based on your list of feeder birds) it is illegal to harm them. At the very least it is protected by the migratory bird treaty act. Further more, certain subspecies and species of shrike are declining. Out of curiosity, would you shoot a hawk for preying after your feeder birds? What about a cat?
I am bird bander from Czech Republic and all birds on my videos are catching for scientific purposes (migratory and population bird studies). This shrike catch is realized under "eye check" and caught birds is removed from the trap immediatelly. After banding and measuring is immediatelly released.
One can wonder if it isn't irresponsible to put this video on youtube. I can see trapping for scientific purposes, like banding can be justified ... but this footage can give other kinds of people bad idea's.
thank you for the video, this particular bird is a beautiful but deadly vulture...it impales small seed eating song birds. It prays on chickadees, nut hatches, cardinals, finches, grossbeaks, small woodpeckers and nuthatches...it is unbelievably crafty..it feeds on your bird feeder birds..I will be trapping the one snacking on my birdfeeder birds.
@FatherOfSin It is for ringing birds with using domestic small mammals. in this case it is Phodopus roborowski. I also use glass cage in windy or rainy conditions.
