I think the error was making him a vanilla without a way to capitalize on that like a card or an archetype that gave you an advantage for having a vanilla monster on your side of the field. Without that he should have been and effect monster with just the effect of being able to summon him with contact fusion instead of poly or instant fusion. He would have been a much stronger and useful card that way

The thing with contact fusion is that all the monsters need to be on the field. At least with Poly, you can fuse from the hand and, at the same time, get rid of two bricks.
@@TieflingKumasi but then you need an extra card if you are not fusing from the deck. At that point is just better to hope to top instant fusion instead of running 3 garnet that you need to have at the same time

The future of Synchro seems to be tokens treated as tuners just so the cards can actually have useful effects without clogging you with garnets, because otherwise Sneedlefiber would pull them from deck off normal summon Ash Blossom.
He created Nibiru? Nowhere near the power of the strongest card of 2017 I say. He really fell off after the masterpiece that was Theseus
And the best thing about this story was that in some European versions in the original print run the 'Tuner' keyword was straight up missing on every Theseus due to an misprint. Just the icing on the cake of this redicoulus story...

I personally think the Legendary Dragon retrains were the biggest let downs. 5 of the most meta defining Dragons in the game were said to get retrains. These being: CED, JD, DAD, REDMD and Trish. The fact all their names are abriviated should tell you how powerful and well known they are. Each one remade and for a Super-Type - meaning: Pendulum, Synchro, Xyz, Link and Fusion respectively. All of the retrains were nerfed versions of the original. They all had heavy restrictions, were over-balanced and were worse than just generic Extradeck monsters that were out in 2018. 4/5 of the original Meta Dragons were NOMI Monsters but they had easy summoning conditions and Synchro Trishular was very generic & splashable for Synchro decks. Retrain Dragons needed you to jump through hoops to get some really underwhelming effects that tier 2 archetypes could easily make, on their own. None of them saw any competitive play other than the CED Pendulum retrain seeing fringe uses (mostly because of the Pendulum Scale effect).
Fusion trish seen some play in thunder dragon too, dad xyz has seen little play in dragon link too.
I use the Link Darkness Metal Dragon on my Dragunity Deck.
I guess the DAD retrain was an ok generic xyz monster in Duel Links?
@@DROPBEAR9 True. I forgor about that. Though, it was more so because of Thunder Dragons all having floating effects when banished. More so a case of Fusion Trish being used for what it is rather than what it does. Same with Xyz DAD. Dragon was pretty powerful, in it's time.
It's like Aqua Dolphine being used in Gouki. You have a mediocre card that can be used in a deck that really synergises and also produces so much advantage that you can afford running a bad card.
"4/5 of the original Meta Dragons were NOMI Monsters". My mistake. 3/5 were NOMI. REDMD wasn't strictly a NOMI but you would never Tribute Summon it because of the regular summoning effect being much more efficient. It's also worth mention that REDMD is a Red-Eyes card so you can search it out with Red-Eyes Insight, Metal Claws and all the other support. Way back in the day, this support didn't exist so hard drawing was the main option. So while not technically a NOMI... close enough.
I feel like Theseus' overhype was caused in part by Jerome McHale's bizarre obsession with 5d's and synchros. When he said that he used Theseus' in "every deck (he) ran", we misinterpreted the statement to believe that Theseus would be applicable in all decks, not just synchro decks

@@Wintermight Whether or not that's true is irrelevant. The point is that they're only part of the card pool so saying Theseus' applied to "every deck" was misleading. McHale was being a bit myopic
It'd be like if I said "I run The First Darklord in all my decks" and the general player doesn't exactly know that I run Darklords in all my decks.

The best condemnation of this card came out in Dawn of Majesty: Alvain, Bird of Vanity. It was the exact same chassis as Theseus, but this time a level 2 fusion tuner. It was released as a common to no fanfare at all.
Also an Instant Fusion retrain that has synergy with the Bird. (As well including the criticized Sea Monster)
It being named after vanity might be a dig at McHale's hyping up of Theseus and how even after the card released he was still so confident in his belief about its power.

I mean, it was a later released card that was just LV2 that needed Vanillas to Fuse.
It's funny that because of this, the next time Konami said they had literal "game changing" cards, no one believed them. Until they saw that what those cards were, Dimension Shifter, Niburu and Dark ruler no more lol
What we got back in 2017: Invoked. Ash Big Forehead. Bloddy Zoodiac !!! God damn Halqifibrax showed his cute head in OCG and people were scared.

To be fair, if Halq hadn't taken so long to cross the ocean, Theseus could have been seen as a decent way to get the Tuner half of the material...

I loved Theseus in my PK deck. Summoning Omega with any PK was a nice option.
Theseus underrated. But thats today standards. Ready Fusion basically makes him a free synchro, and with todays card pool you can go for alot.
I still own my 3 copies I bought on pre order. I never could figure out how it was a good card, but neither did anyone. I thought for sure a fusion synchro archetype would eventually be released that made the hype real but never did. And now, out of spite, I just refuse to sell this for the $3-$8 it’s worth lol. Such a letdown.
How much did they cost on pre-release?
I guess having missed the hype make a difference. The card has been a beast giving me quick access to Baronne/Crystal Wing before my combos.
It was like swearing by the mom 'n pop diner on the corner as the finest of five-star restaurants. A good meal, to be sure, but not one that could have stood up to the pressure it was put against.
Sea Monster of Theseus is like printing a card that on summon would search any Pyro-Type monster. Like, "Wow, that sounds really versatile... I can't think of anything good to use it in."
Cards like Sea Monster are honestly stuff that I see as BEGGING for a deck to be made that uses similar sort of themes to them. A lot of broken cards had gone years without being hit because they only really became broken when a specific synergy was brought in (like over 20 banned cards are banned explicitly due to their interaction with a newer card/deck, such as Block Dragon, Auroradon, Neptune, Smoke Grenade, etc.)
Did you know there is literally only seven WATER Zombie-type monsters, and literally four of them are variants of Mayakashi Yuki-Onna? What if we got an archetype of WATER Zombies that was Synchro-focused? Sea Monster of Theseus could see use there, especially if the archetype includes some generic benefits for running WATER monsters.
I dunno, I think it's way more interesting to see Konami R&D making new, strong archetypes that are designed to give a spotlight to some old obscure card over just focusing on their new hotness or supporting cards that have already gotten a reputation in the community (like their new sets pushing Frogs and Blackwings). It makes it easier to balance the archetype as well since you generally won't need to worry about some busted combo by making it have synergy with an already strong set of monsters.

He probably should have realized his mistake when he had to clarify he wasn’t trolling. If you have to answer that question then you likely messed up somewhere.
I mean maybe there's a world where this card could be op under the right circumstances but it definitely wouldn't be the best card released all year it'd be really strong in 1-2 decks at most
not really, a broken card can be interpreted as a "troll" card.
if you for example tell someone from 2002 that Raigeki for example would go to 03 in 2022, he would look at you and ask "is this a troll?"
the interpretation of the "is this a troll" sounded as if the card is SO BROKEN that he had to ask the question lmao. it fooled the playerbase xD

Also, heavy storm was at two in 2002, so I don't think it would be too surprising to them.

I saw one of these in a card shop the other day, and instantly bought it just because i remember how much the card made me laugh back in 2017
One day I wanna find a proper use for the best card of 2017. For now, it'll sit in my binder and make me laugh occasionally 😄
One of the coolest ways I've seen it used was in a drytron cyber stein deck, where you would get it out with stein & use it w 2 of the drytrons to make some synchro lvl 7 that could search out telekinetic charging cell
Instant and ready fusion out a high level tuner on the field is not bad, but you need something to make with it to make it worth it, or make a special target that needs a normal fusion tuner to make, but can win a game by itself

I think that Kaminari attack (which has the same non-effects, also a fusion monster and level 5) actually saw more play and was more viable in the end than this card 😂
Not really, at that time, cards like Dark Balter were actually better targets when metamorphosis was legal.

On a somewhat related and not related note: Sea Monster of Theseus is like my spirit animal in Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel. XD I keep pulling THAT _SR_ in that Despia pack.
At least it's not a UR. _COULD YOU IMAGINE?!_ Instant Fusion and Ready Fusion are UR but those make more sense than the strongest monster of 2017.

Just release a spell card that says: special summon 2 non-effect fusion monsters from your extra deck, one tuner and one non-tuner, immediately after that, synchro summon 1 synchro monster using them as synchro materials. And suddenly it becomes playable.
This is probably my favorite meme card in the game. The sad thing is, if this card had any effect at all it could actually be a powerful tool for synchro decks.
Theseus not having an effect is a blessing now that instant fusion is limited. So I'm sorta glad it turned out that way.

i use this card in my rikka deck with predaplant and instant fusion to summon a level 8 or level 11 synchro lol or use as a tribute for aroma jasmine

I think sea monster of Theseus should banish a spell/trap when it was special summoned but banished when it leaves the field.

I personally played this monster at three before they limited instant fusion… I used it for synchro plays in my magnet warrior deck. I still do, just use ready fusion instead.
Same. With Theseus you can turn a level 3 Electromagnet Warrior into Dragite while putting a water in grave.
I remember back when one of the theories was that the card was going to be a lv 4 vanilla with 3k attack haha

I don't get how it's bad but I'm a synchro player so idk. Easy high lvl snychros seem good and you can do rank 5 stuff. I can see it falling off after master rule 4 but it still seems good. I bet they're better options at this point though.

I think thould have made it a level 4 instead and let it change it's level up or down by 1. Would have been incredible for pretty much every Synchro deck, Xyz decks but with a big focus on R4nk Toolbox decks, and by proxy making Zoodiac even better since that was the big push at the time, an easier way to make Cyber Dragon Infinity in decks that otherwise couldn't, with niche play for Links as well especially once Halqifibrax got released. Having a pocket Gagaga Magician without the Synchro restriction, and for the cost of only 1 main deck card that is infinitely more useful anyways (Instant Fusion) would have been nuts.
I guess the level system could have been the same though; Have it start as level 5 and then allow it to decrease it's level by 1 or 2 instead. It would help more rogue and fringe decks play around Skill Drain and Effect Veiler and Ghost Ogre and things like that for some of their bigger plays. You get what I'm saying.

His series should be changed into Misplays series or The History of misplays.

maybe i am spoiled by Ready Fusion but i like the card, it's a combo piece, it's fun. i think the community is too toxic and take things too seriously.

If they just said "Hey, we made a great toolbox card that is going to open up a lot of plays for a lot of decks!" it would have been fine. Yup, great water, zombie, synchro, and Instant Fusion plays out of 1 card designed to work with a lot of different power cards...but man...
Still no where near as overhyped as other archetypes and cards throughout the games history. At least Theseus saw some actual competitive use.

I also find it funny that Konami made another Fusion Tuner Vanilla and they kept that one a low rarity and lower stats. Showing they learned they learned their lesson from Theseus. XP

@@EeveeReturn Yes I am. Ironically, it's better than Theseus. It's a LV2 tuner meaning it can be used for a lot of synchro extensions. And it's light which can be used in a lot of other strategies like a free light for Construct or Quaeritis. But it's still not that good. It's just a better target than Theseus. XP

Kind of makes sense the card with lower stats and harder materials would be less rare.
Funnily enough, with MR5 and Ready Fusion, you could argue Sea Monster of Theseus is better suited to splashing today as a tuner option in other decks, than it was in 2017. In non-zombie world variants of Eldlich it could be used with conq or haquero in order to make Baronne, which is funny. Still not a meta defining card, but it is pretty cool as a notable low level fusion nonetheless.
The new level 2 bird has more versatility now
