The MG ZS ALPHA Started the Premium Budget Crossover Revolution!

- The MG ZS Alpha was introduced in the Philippines last 2018, and this budget crossover opened the floodgates for budget crossovers with premium features. The 2020 MG ZS Alpha was priced is 1 million pesos and yet gives a lot of features for the price. In this Filipino car review, I take a look at the top-spec 2021 MG ZS Alpha to see what sort of goodies you get for the price. It had no competition when it came into the country, since the only cars at its price point were the smaller Ford Ecosport and the Nissan Juke, and the Suzuki Vitara. The Honda BRV also came at the same price, but this is more of a glorified hatchback than a crossover. Since the MG ZS became an instant success, it opened the way for other Chinese carmakers to bring in their premium budget crossovers, like the Chery Tiggo 5x, the Geely Coolray Comfort, and the GAC GS3. Now that these other competitors are in the country, the 2021 MG ZS Alpha needs to be refreshed so it can stay relevant. It also shares the same look with the Mazda CX5. However, at nearly half the price of a CX5, the MG ZS presents an awesome value for the price. Even after 2 years, it still has the chops to take the fight to other crossovers, even against the likes of the Subaru XV or the Mazda CX3 or the Mitsubishi Xpander Cross.

I wonder how sturdy is the logo covering the liftgate opener. On the video if looks and sounds flimsy, something that will break after much use.

Mazdang Ginaya. Pero honestly, it looks great even after 3 yrs sa Pinas. Napapalingon pa rin ako pag may dumadaan.

Side view is former Hyundai Tucson
Back view looks Kia sportage and the tail lamps are comparable.with Subarus.

It can go on long trips, as long as it is properly maintained. 👍
215/50 R17 you won't expect soft ride with that tire dimensions. It's not the suspension, It's the tires config.

Hi! Reygan, let me ask you being an auto expert yourself, can we put or is it possible to install a "turbocharger" on this vehicle as an "upgrade" since it also has the same engine as the "MG-6" so it will have the same horsepower and torque output? Thank you.
It's possible, but the engine durability and reliability would suffer in the long run. May as well wait for the newer MG ZS to arrive, hopefully with a turbo and internals built to withstand forced induction.
I think the 2022 MG ZS will have a variant with turbocharged engine 😊👍

Is this okay for long drive? Like 3 days road trip. And kaya kya umakyat ng mejo mataas? Or elevated road.

Great review. Thanks for mentioning that the panoramic sunroof did not have a more opaque cover. Good catch. It doesn’t show easily on the video. It’s a bummer considering that the PI is a tropical country. However, a quick and easy workaround would be to place a heavy tint the sunroof glass.
Not an issue since you do get free tint from the dealers. They don't tint the showroom cars.

It’s kinda CX5 but after doing a little research of their old roadster pics, MG was already using these type of grilles since the industrial age so I guess we better not say they’re “copying” Mazda.
Fun fact: the exact buttons on the sunroof controls can also be found on the VW Tiguan, center instrument cluster is I think the same design with the VW Lavida, only that the Lavida is red in color. And the ZS is a rebadged Roewe RX3.
