  • BBC boss Tim Davie is said to be considering reversing the decision not to sing Rule, Britannia! at The Proms. The incoming director-general believes outgoing chief Lord Tony Hall’s move wreaked “terrible damage” to the Corporation, say insiders. Has the whole debacle exposed the BBC for failing to understand the real issues behind Black Lives Matter and pandering to a woke minority online?

    Originally written during the period known as the Second Hundred Years’ War, an extended period of conflict between Great Britain and France, the song originally could be seen as a refusal to bow to the French, and to perpetuate the image of the powerful British Empire which spanned across multiple continents.

    He brings up the verse “The nations not so blest as thee
    Must, in their turn, to tyrants fall,
    While thou shalt flourish great and free:
    The dread and envy of them all." This literally means while other countries fall to tyranny britain will remain free and flourish and become the envy of those under tyranny it has nothing to do with British colonisation. Dread and envy specifically, the dread of tyrants and the envy of the oppressed. This is a song about freedom nothing else

    We have a great history.
    We sang we'd never be slaves because in our very recent history we had been carted off as slaves by the Barbary (North African) pirates, sometimes a whole Cornish village disappearing in one night.
    Nothing to do with celebrating slavery, which we drove out of most of the world using the power of our navy.
    Too many people enjoying the benefits of living here, but doing their best to destroy our culture and history.
    Shameful.

  • @wordwarrior2350
    @wordwarrior2350 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Basicly the song says that, "... Britania rules the waves... Never will be slaves". Similar to the German national anthem which says, "Germany over all", which actually means the same as, My country over everything... Which is very nationalistic, but it doesn´t mean Germany over every other country in Europe. or the world.
    As educated people we have to see everything in its context, when it was written and what were the circumstances at the time.
    There could easily be people in The USA who take acception to the words, "God bless America...", who are Atheists, but Democrocies are based on the vote of the majority+ a percentage, right?
