  • Today I review viewer submissions of their sports photos! Some are great and are fine just as they are. Others, well, need a few pointers.
If you want your photos included in a future review video, send ONE edited photo to photoreview@proton.me. Include the make and model of the camera and lens you took the photo with. Also, and this is important - send me a full resolution JPG. Don't send them from your phone - it comes through severely compressed.

Thanks to everyone who sent in photos to be reviewed! Unfortunately, due to time limitations, I couldn't include everything I was sent. Instead I tried to do a variety of scenarios to discuss.
Since the response to this video has been pretty positive, I'll look at doing more in the future. I do need to apologize to Joe Salerno, as I accidentally spelled and pronounced his name wrong in the video. Sorry about that!

"I tend to be a tight cropper". Wow, that one really spoke to me. I tend to do it in a similar way without even thinking twice about it, but hearing your thought process really helps and I think next editing session will be more conscious

Hi Jack. Thank you for the critique. I agree with your comment regarding catching the subjects face. In some instances it's just impossible as you know and the rest of the image outweighs not using it. One thing I did notice is that image when shown on your screen the whites are a lot more blown out than the original image. The basketball image I did use the background masking tool in Lightroom to drop the exposure of the background to make the subject pop. The masking tool in light room is great. Appreciate your review and I love your channel and work! Keep it up!

@@aspenandvail yeah, I kinda thought you had done that with the masking. Also, I didn’t say it, but in hindsight on the WB, i try to get the skin tones correct, even in those weird green-magenta situations.

Hey Jack I just want to say I really appreciate you picking my photo. Honestly I never got the notification that you posted this video so that's why I'm so late responding. The image was taken with a a7iii + Sigma 70-200 f2.8 DG DN OS Sports, ISO: 100, 80mm, f3.5, 1/2000s. Thank you again for your time I really appreciate it and your work. - Michael Collins IMG#20

Hello Jack and thank you for this video. I've learned so much from you these past couple of years and admire your work greatly. You have no idea how much it means to me. You saved both pics for the end of the video and one of my photos was your favorite. Super excited about the validation that I could be doing something right, lol. I'm just a dad who wanted to take pics of his son for memories. It's turned into much more than that now. I upgraded to a Z8 and now looking to get a couple more lenses to complete my gear. My son's teammates and friends that play other sports ask if I can come out and photograph them as well. It really is so much fun. I love the facial expressions but really enjoy capturing the emotions that sports can bring. When they use their pics on social media and the thank you's and their happy faces, to me it's all worth the time and effort I put in. I've gotten requests for Sweet 16 and grad pics. Intimidating for sure and much to learn on that side of things. Anyway, thanks again for all you do. You're the man.

Nice video. The critiques you mentioned were spot on, and I share your favorites as well. A bit of masking could have improved a couple of the shots.
Regarding denoise, I think it's often overused. Personally, I'm not a fan of overly smooth, polished images-I prefer a bit of grit to give them character. Thanks for making the video.

@@sportsphototv Yes, I didn’t want to go down a rabbit hole of editing techniques in this video, but some noise reduction is better than others, for sure. Same thing with the masking. That’s a whole video there.

I think this is a really good video idea. I would definitely agree you are a very tight cropper as sometimes I like to leave just a smidge more than you. Otherwise, I was agreeing with you on just about everything. Let us know the next time you're doing this as I would love to send a photo or two! I just have to make sure I send a meh one and a really good one!

Listen to your critiques and suggestions helped a lot especially darkening the background to bring the subject out more. Though I didnt send a photo for you to critique, this was well informed!! Thanks Jack! How often do you critique? I may want to send one to you and listen to your suggestions.

Hey this is Raymond! Both of my images were shot with the Z5 and an adapted Nikon 70-200G. (I own a Z6II now). Image one was shot at 1000/sec, F2.8, ISO 5000, and image two was shot at 1000/sec, F2.8, ISO 3200. I appreciate the critique and will definitely keep your advice in my mind as I continue shooting sports!

Basically, I thought you should crop tighter and bring up the exposure a little. Also, although the action shot was pretty good, the subjects weren't tack sharp. I could see that there were heatwaves coming up off the turf field and that may have played a part in how soft they looked.
