ESP8266 Wifi signal test

  • PLEASE ignore any comment of the Wemos D1 Pro signal strength. I did not know that I should have re-soldered a jumper so the ESP uses the external antenna. This is why it is performing the same as the D1 mini.
    This is my attempt to understand the limitations of various ESP8266 boards when it comes to wifi reception.

    Have you moved the 0ohm jumper on the mini pro to use an external antenna?

      Damn, I feel such a fool. I did not know about it. I will retake this video once the modifications are made.

      I loved to watch the video, considering the work it takes to organise everything, do all the measurements and then compile it into a structured video and if you made a 'mistake' not having the information that a resistor needs to be removed, it was even more interesting to watch this video and learn from it. I have a project with the same issue, where I would love to have a better signal, and was thinking about an external antenna. So I really would like to know what difference you got after changing this resistor. How much better is it?

      Pierre Verbakel I will probably do a revised video in a few months. I did move the resistor and the reception improved but not much. But it was enough in my case to reduce the restart of 100 times a day down to a few per week.

      One would always want more, but good to know it did make an improvement

      Csongor Varga You can mount the antenna on a small metal plate of at least half a wave length. This will improve performance even more.

    If you wish to compare signal strengths, I would not hold the antenna with my hand. This might affect the results. I'd hold the device and let the antenna hang in free air.

    Apart from the jumper, you also should be doing each test separately and with the pro antenna in a bracket to place in the vertical position. Also either open the sonoff enclosure or place all in open air

    The. direction of the Antenna matters. The tranmitter from the Antenna through the H field. So the H field I.e. Magnetic field can be horizontal or vertical. So you need the same plane for max power tranfer.

    wemos pro has better signal.but your externel antenna ist not aktiv.solder the resistor to ohter side.

    Interesting. I have a related requirement. I have an IP camera in which I have replaced the rubber ducky antenna with a yagi to get better range. I now need to aim the yagi to maximise the signal strength received by the router. How to I measure the camera's transmitted signal strength?

    • @csongorvarga
      @csongorvarga  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately I don't have enough knowledge to give you a really good advise. Some routers show the signal strength of the wireless devices, that may help. Or maybe what you can do is set the device to access point mode (set to pairing mode) and use a wifi scanner app on your phone to measure the strength of that wifi. You phone may not receive the signal the same way as your router, but if you want to maximise the gain it could be good enough.

    Hi, I have a question. What if for some reason wifi is down, will SONOFF work?

    • @csongorvarga
      @csongorvarga  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SONOFF stores the 8 on/off settings under the timer function. That will work, but nothing else. If will show as offline in the app and would not accept any commands.

    is the external antenna for wifi only? I'm planning to make a LoRa project with RA-02 (433MHz) and I was wondering if the antenna used here is compatible with the RA-02 😅 thanks!!

    • @csongorvarga
      @csongorvarga  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, that is for Wifi. To be honest the ESP that have a LoRa chip all have an external antenna connection for the LoRA radio. At least the ones I have all do.

    • @yoshimochii
      @yoshimochii 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@csongorvarga I'm planning to buy a separate module for a LoRa cuz usually the ones with pre built LoRa are relatively expensive compared to those that don't have one 😅 And I already own an ESP32 DevKit so buying just the module would not damage my wallet that much haha (im a student 😭)

      @@csongorvarga btw, in case you know, I just wanna ask, for the SX1278 LoRa Module Ra-02 433MHZ, can it still send/receive data even without an external antenna? I ordered the antenna and the module separately because for some reason, the antenna wasn't included in the module package I ordered (just the pins for soldering). I'm expecting the module to arrive much earlier than the antenna but I'm not quite sure if I can test it without the antenna 😅

    • @csongorvarga
      @csongorvarga  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@yoshimochii I never used this module, but looking at a few pictures, it looks like there is an antenna connector. That assumes it is designed with external antenna only. So don't use it until you get the antenna and connect it to the module.

    • @yoshimochii
      @yoshimochii 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@csongorvarga ohh, i see. That's unfortunate. I thought it would still work but on very short distances. This is because I have an esp32 devkitcv4 wroom-32u (the one that has an antenna connector) and I could still connect to wifi even without an antenna. Thanks for the warning though! (but it REALLY makes me wanna try lol)

    please remove/or affix comment this video as it is misleading, due to wemos pro antenna resistor still connected to the ceramic antenna.

    Szia. Gondolkoztál rajat, hogy a videókat feliratozod magyar nyelven? Szerintem sok embert érdekelhet aki nem tud annyira jól angolul.

      Eszembe jutott, de elenyészően kevesen néznek Magyarországról. Nagyon sok videó ötletem van amire így sincs időm, így nem hiszem hogy a közeljövőben nekiállok feliratot gyártani.

      nekem elég lenne csak a Sonoff-os videókról :D
