Pretty funny.... I used to see Tim Horner, Micheal Hayes, Robert Gibson and others at a local bar in pensacola Florida named genes lounge where women drink free... and let me tell you lol.. they would get lit and all the "country" chicks would be on them... but they were always nice and liked to talk before it got busy...
Anytime I need a pick-me-up... or I am feeling stupid... or just a good laugh, I listen to a Jim Cornette story about Tim Horner and all of a sudden... I feel better about myself.
I do think it's a good idea to turn all the TVs (if possible) at Best Buy type places to wrestling to get the passing interest of those in the store, not for bumping up ratings.

To be fair, the best buy idea wasn't horrible. Simple, but not horrible.
In the early days of the internet with fanbases of cult tv shows that were likely facing cancellation there would end up being fans calling for everyone in their forum or newsgroup or whatever to make sure to tune in to watch the show to try to bump up the ratings. Of course there is no point in a person doing that if they didn't have a Nielsen box.
