A roast dinner without roast pumping is not a dinner ,and we call pumpkins pumpkins, squash is a whole other vegetable which is also fantastic roasted . Pavlova is an Australian desert despite New Zealanders trying to claim it (everyone knows they can't cook any better than they play cricket) it's made by baking a meringue base that ends up crispy on the outside and soft in the middle ,its then topped with whipped cream and the fresh fruit of your choice some people then dribble melted chocolate or fruit syrups over the top, sorry I've just made myself hungry I'm off for a snack , check ya later .

I'm surprised they didn't comment on the typical hamburger you get from a fish and chip shop. It's not just a burger in a bun. It is loaded with pretty much everything your doctor warned you about plus a bit of lettuce, tomato, and beetroot (you call them "beets") to take the guilt away. You usually need the ability to dislocate your jaw to get your mouth around it and will probably need a shower and change of clothes after because of the mess they make as they disintegrate while you try to eat them.

Also pumpkin soup is fucking delicious. Super easy to make too. You can have it with fresh bread or even chicken nuggets. I'm not sure how it would be given that US produce is apparently less flavoursome than ours here in Aus, but you could give it a shot:
      *Ingredients*
      750g butternut pumpkin
      3 large white potatoes
      2 brown onions
      3 chicken stock cubes
1 cup thick cream (whipped cream, not sweetened)
      10 cups water
      Dash of salt and pepper
      *Instructions*
      1. Peel and cut pumpkin and potatoes into small chunks/cubes
      2. Place in large bot with water, heat until starts to boil, then lower temp to simmer
      3. Dice onion and add to pot
      4. Blend veges until mostly smooth
      5. Add stock cubes and extra cup of water if too thick
      6. Stir pot, adding salt and pepper to soup
      7. Leave on heat for a few minutes, stirring occasionally to make sure it's smooth
      8. Turn heat to low and allow to sit for 2 mins before adding cup of cream
      9. Stir until uniform in colour and consistency
      10. Remove from heat and serve

Pavlova is a meringue. In Australia we do it as the size of a large round cake. Its a special occasion dessert. It feels solid but goes crumbly when you cut it on outside but it's sorta melted and chewy in the middle. Put thickened cream on top and chopped fruit, we usually do passionfruit pulp, strawberries or peaches. Cut it like a round cake aswell. I believe your meringue is like small solid muffins or biscuits( size of inner hand).

Kangaroo is a very lean meat and tastes a bit gamey. I'm not a big fan but I haven't a lot of it, it's more pet food to me. We even eat the other animal on our coat of arms, the emu.
Pumpkin soup is really tasty, it's a thick soup, I think you'd really like it, it's great on a cold winters day. Pavlova is the bomb, my favorite dessert by far, cream on top with fruit like peaches, passionfruit, strawberries, kiwifruit. Vegemite, it's an acquired taste, they are right, for newbies a very thin scraping on well buttered toast.

A shrimp is under an inch for the whole thing. The phrase was insisted on for that ad, just to make you americans happy. The king prawn Hoges was holding up was a joke, that size would never be called a shrimp.
A pav is a meringue like thing, a meringue is hard right through, it uses the same ingredients, but very different techniques. Often the fruit on a pav is seasonal fruit berries, kiwifruit and passionfruit. Not often seeing apples oranges or pears. You can cut the base with any spoon, very unlike a meringue. Who cares whether the chef who invented it in aus was a kiwi? It is delicious.
Kangaroo is very lean meat. Has a gamey smell, needs a quick cook to avoid toughness. Not everybody eats it, your choice.
Aussie F&C and chicken salt are our take on it. The fries are double fried, using the right temperature on the oil, makes them much less greasy, the thick chips are not soggy, but crunchy outside and cloud soft inside. Fish comes in batter, crumbs or naked and grilled, your choice.
Lemon(ade) soft drink, lime juice cordial, and angostura bitters from the pub. Is a pub drink with nearly no alcohol, so popular it is now bottled for sale. I make it myself, at home, the bitters can be too prominent in bottled styles for me. Lemonade is an actual citrus, very different from lemons, not bitter at all.
Try your mart of walls for tim-tams and bundy Ginger beer. Try a float with ginger beer.
Those tentacles were more likely to be huge octapus or tiny from cuttle fish, which gives us calamari rings as well.

It's interesting that people say they hate Vegemite, but love chicken salt. Chicken salt is essentially plain salt, which enhances flavour, and powdered chicken stock, giving it a "umami" taste (savoury, or more-ish). If you were to eat a tablespoon full of chicken stock, you'd rightly say it tasted awful and overpowering. But in the right proportion and combination, it is delicious. Same as Vegemite. Would you eat a raw beef stock cube? No, same overpowering flavour, though it is still a umami taste. Same with Vegemite. The trick is to just use a smear of it, just enough to get a slight salty taste, while still being able to taste the underlying stock flavour (it's actually a vegetable by-product, not beef). I believe it comes from yeast used in making beer. THEN when you get used to it or more adventurous, you can try a higher concentration. It makes it easier when you start to include a slice of processed cheese, it will make the taste more mellow. They actually sell pre-mixed jars of Cheesy-bite for just that purpose (Vegemite and cream cheese).
With pavlova, there is a friendly dispute as to whether it is Australian or New Zealand's invention. It is firmly whisked egg whites which is lightly baked, leaving the outside merangue crust, but the center is more gooey like marshmallow. Then fill with whipped cream and top with fruits. You can think of it as an inverted Baked Alaska without the ice cream. The type of merangue used is originally French, but there are also Italian and Swiss versions. Most of them are firm all the way through.

Unknown outside of SA and yep everyone who's tried them have asked why they're only limited to there. A Pie Floater is also a favourite but not sure if it's available anymore since the Pie Carts stopped operating in Adelaide. When in Adelaide there's a seafood restaurant chain called Barnacle Bills and it's so consistently brilliant and hasn't changed since I was a kid, I'm 53 now and it's always at least a stop in for a feed when I'm back in the old grounds. Pavlova is meringue. Egg white and sugar whipped until it screams, then baked on a tray in approximately the shape and size of a round cake, then cooled. Then you top it with whipped cream and fruit like passionfruit, kiwifruit, banana, berries, some sort of melon or other, whatever you like here really so long as it is colourful!
Shrimp and prawns are actually different critters. Prawns are typically larger so we'll still often talk about a shrimp cocktail that has little shrimp in it, but prawns at other times.

Pavlova (Pav) is DELICIOUS. It’s a firm meringue on the outside, and almost marshmallow-y on the inside? But a lot softer/fluffier and does dissolve in your mouth. Topped with whipped cream and seasonal fruit - very typical Christmas dessert, but it’s so good I would always request for a birthday cake. 😄

You're not a fan of veggies or seafood? You're my kind of person. 😆
I moved to Australia over 20 years ago from Scotland so Christmas day food took a little bit of getting used to.
Yes the prawns are there and salads but a lot of the other stuff we do would be sliced cooked ham and a BBQ chicken ripped up. Then get some boomer/vienna bread sliced thick, butter it up and slap that meat on it with cheese, coleslaw or whatever you want or nothing. Delicious. And when its stinking hot, it really works. You do not want a hot meal at Christmas when your brain is melting. 👍
Also has the benefit that it's dead easy to setup.

Kiwi Fish 'n' Chips is Da Bomb. Then there is the argument of who invented Pavlova, Kiwi's or Aussie's? As a Kiwi......well go figure.Kangaroo is like a lean rich flavor meat, kangaroos maybe a national emblem but we've got billions of them, Emu, another national emblem, meh, strong, dark, bit tough. Crocodile chunky fish/chicken, mild flavor. Certainly not endangered. We consider shrimp as tiny things. Meat pies, bacon 'n' egg pies Yum-as, da best. Marmite is Kiwi. Vegemite, start with a smidge of a smear. Cordial, pronounced Cord-dee-all. Your biscuits are our scones. CrankyGranny Western Australia

Hi Neal!!, You know what, I've seen people, on TV, give American's Vegemite , the way I've seen it done is not the way most of us have it. Firstly, you need to have margarine, us Aussies aren't that game, Vegemite needs margarine, also they spread it too thick!!, A light coating of it is better, we're tough, don't get me wrong, but we are not suicidal, they need to calm down the amount and method of execution. Much love and kindness always Tracie from Australia ❤

Chocolate is fine but not Cadburys, unless it's their upmarket high Cacoa chocolates, .LIndt is the best here particulalry round Christmas when all Lindt is half price.Ginger beer will sting you if it is good better than ginger ale which is dry by comparison .Christmas day these days we have prawns, lobsters, fish, salads, Ham on the bone, balmain bugs, calamari , Mussels, Scallops . Avocado, Pineapple, Mangoes ,strawberries, lichee, etc etc etc

Aussie here, I dont really like Kangaroo, I do like Buffalo though thats the best. I think the main difference between aussie food and american food is how much sugar is in american food. Even the bread is sweet there and the butter is whitish.. whats with that???? When I was in the states I gave a horse a piece of bread with butter and vegemite on it.. The reaction was hilarious.. the horse stomped that piece of bread in the ground and was neighing as he did it.
Personally I think cadbury chocolate is not soo good, the chocolate from aldi is way better.

As Australia is in the Asian Pacific most of our Asian restaurants have to be top quality.
Infact in many cases better than Asia, because our cattle and fresh produce is far superior to that of most of Asia, the meat and vegetables in the dishes just taste more fresh and flavoursome.
