      I just came across it myself, and it's awesome. It's rare to get an inside look into aspects of the game that normally aren't discussed, at least not by somebody who's lived it. Antonelli really hit a home run here with his channel.

    Cool channel I just randomly came across. Good to see somebody local make the bigs (born in Beverly here) It's a shame your career wasn't longer.
    Even though you went to the prep, I imagine you've met Jeff Allison at some point? I've met him a couple times and heard stories about striking out Manny and Ortiz in ST, which has got to be a life long memory, like getting a hit off Maddux.
    Since I don't read a ton of athlete bios, do you have any high school teammates who made it?

    In 2007, Braun had what some sportswriters called one of the most dominant rookie seasons in baseball history. Called up on May 24 by the Brewers, he hit his first major league home run two nights later. Braun was voted the National League (NL) Rookie of the Month for June, ranking first in RBIs (21) and tied for first in home runs (6) among NL rookies that month. He also recorded a .716 slugging percentage and a .435 OBP. In July, Braun became the fastest in Brewer history to hit 10 major league home runs, doing so in his 38th game. He hit his 15th home run in the 50th game of his career, and his 20th in his 64th game, making him the fastest to those milestones since Albert Pujols in 2001. He was also the fastest to 20 homers in Brewers history. At month's end, he received his second consecutive NL Rookie of the Month Award, as well as his first NL Player of the Month Award (making him the first player to have won both awards in the same month). He hit a league-leading 11 home runs, with 25 RBIs, while batting .345.
    In mid-August, Yost moved Braun from third in the batting order to cleanup, switching him with Prince Fielder. The move was expected to allow Braun to steal more, as batting before Fielder was not conducive to him risking being thrown out on steal attempts. Additionally, successfully stealing a base would hypothetically allow opponents to intentionally walk Fielder and avoid pitching to him. At the end of the month, however, Yost reverted to his previous batting order. On August 26, Braun hit his 25th home run in his 82nd game, quicker than any major leaguer since Mark McGwire in 1987.
    On September 9, the Brewers became the third team in major league history to start a game with three straight home runs, as Rickie Weeks, J. J. Hardy, and Braun homered in consecutive at bats. Braun said, "That was pretty cool. I was never part of something like that before." Braun's home run in that game also broke the Brewers rookie record for home runs (28). Braun hit his 30th homer in his 94th game, a pace no player had set to start a career since McGwire hit 30 in 84 games during 1986 and 1987.
    Braun finished with an NL-leading .634 slugging percentage, a mark that set new all-time rookie and Brewers records. He was fifth in the league in at bats per home run (13.3) and OPS(1.004), tied for fifth in home runs (34), and eighth in batting average (.324) among hitters with at least 490 plate appearances. He led the Brewers in batting average and slugging percentage, and was second behind Fielder in home runs, runs (91), and RBIs (97), tied for second in triples(6), and third in OBP (.370) and steals (15), despite not having played in the first 48 games of the season. Braun obliterated the club rookie records of 28 home runs and 81 RBIs, set by Fielder in 2006.
    "I was always small. I was a leadoff hitter growing up, until I was 13 or 14 years old and had a little growth spurt and started hitting home runs."
    -Ryan Braun
    Braun had considerable success against left-handed pitchers. He had the best batting average (.450), OBP (.516), and slugging percentage (.964) of any major league hitter with at least 125 plate appearances against lefties, and was tied for second in the majors in home runs (15). Braun credits his father with his success against lefties. "My dad is left-handed, so growing up, the majority of time, I took batting practice off of him."
    Braun collected several awards at season's end. He won the 2007 NL Rookie of the Year Awardin a vote by 32 members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. He beat out Troy Tulowitzki by 2 points in the closest NL vote since the system was revised in 1980. Of all prior NL Rookies of the Year, only Pujols and Willie McCovey hit for higher batting averages in their rookie year. Braun was voted the 2007 NL Sporting News Rookie of the Year by 488 major league players and 30 managers.Braun also received the 2007 Players Choice NL Most Outstanding Rookie in a vote by his fellow major league players. "When your peers recognize you with an award, that's great", he said. "Those are the guys out there on the field with you, competing against you. Their opinion counts the most, for a player." In voting for the NL Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award, Braun received two 10th-place votes and finished 24th overall. This is JUST A TASTE....go to Wiki and look up more...the guy is very interesting...major power.

      Maris, Mantle also. But Babe an Lou the OGs, there numbers were given because of where they hit in the lineup. They raked big time. Manny an David are probably the best 3,4 this century so far.

    I played against Manny during summer ball and he played in the Bronx, but everyone was aware of him even in Nassau county. He used to show up two hours before games and hit off a tee into the fence alone for two hours straight. He was obsessed. Two years later he was playing not far away in Yankee stadium (as an Indian).

    Thoughts on Robinson Cano?

  • @mattbigham8458
    @mattbigham8458 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Matt, although core fundamentals are consistent, do you see any subtle differences, adjustments in swing mechanics, or approach to hitting based on a player's size? Does a shorter player need to do anything differently than a taller player? Or, for example, do they need to overcompensate by developing exceptionally strong lower body? Not everyone can be Altuve, or can they? I assume the answer is that the swing should be the same and not vary but would appreciate your thoughts on how to best utilize a player's advantages due to body size or try to make up for any below average aspects of body type (height, strength, weight, etc) at the elite level but also and, in particular, for youth players

    My top 5 that I’ve seen:
    1.Barry Bonds. By far the best that I saw. The man could do it all. Hit, run, steal bases, field, great throw, bang it out the park etc. The man had as much patience as he did power which is rare. He even got intentionally walked over 100 times. I actually think that year when he got intentionally walked all those times, that actually beat out the second highest person that walked. He even almost had as many runs as hits that year which would have been a 100 year event. But eventually, he fell a little short.
    2. Griffey jr. another one that could do it all. Great fielder, great hitter and overall great player.
    3. Vlad Guerrero. The man had the largest hit zone out of any player that I’ve ever seen. There was no place to pitch to him. You just had to pray and hope he grounded out.
    4. Tony Gwynn. He wasn’t the best fielder but he had one of the most accurate arms. He rarely struck out. Could find gaps for base hits at any time he chose. Phenomenal player.
    5. Edgar martinez. Probably the most underrated player ever. He was a DH but that shouldn’t matter that he didn’t field cause the one thing he had to do good which was hit, he did in ♠️’s. The players at that time won’t mention it but I know they feared him when he came up to bat.

    • @Jlundeen
      @Jlundeen ปีที่แล้ว

      While Edgar was playing I didn't know of a better pure hitter and in my opinion was the best right-handed hitter in the game. He only topped 30 HR once, but had a career OPS better than Griffey. He was the complete package as a hitter. Very underrated.

    Was there any sort of culture adjustment being from the northeast and then going to the southeast (college), northwest and Texas (minors), and southwest (majors).

    I got a question on player development. Is it better for a player to develop themselves at their position and have as little coach interaction as they can or be physically coached how to improve.
    I ask because you see players work their game, in any sport, and just slaughter people when they play one way, but under a different coach they may try to change techniques up and they fall flat and look like one of the worst players in the area?

    Ryan Braun...Dang, I don't dislike him but I'm kind of partial because I'm good friends with Matt Kemp and we are from the same Hometown which is Midwest City Oklahoma and I think we all know Matt should have won the NL MVP in 2011 as he led the national league in homeruns with 39, and RBIs with 111 and only needed the batting average to win the Triple Crown but ended up in 3rd I believe & that's the only stat Braun had over Camp so I still don't understand how he was able to win that mvp and then the next year it comes out that he has been using an illegal PED, but that's not an excuse it was like some oil that he rubbed on the skin so anyways you brought his name up and I thought I would bring that up & BTW I'm sure you played against Matt Kemp because you always talk about the Dodgers but yeah man he was so good in high school and people don't know this but Matt Kemp was also an All-State basketball player
    I was watching your other video and you mentioned he was on a really good team in Ohio...Well Matt used to play travel ball as well and played for the Oklahoma Outlaws..
    I was born in 85, so we're the same age and Matt Kemp was 84 and it's nice to still see him in the league doing his thing and he's having a great year...
    I think it would be really cool if the Dodgers won the pennant to begin with and then ended up winning the World Series because they have done everything and probably have done enough so it's the next thing

      A) maybe he never played Pujols, B) like he said, it usually takes more time to evaluate hitting. Maybe he didn't see enough of Pujols to really break down his hitting. It's not necessarily a list of the best hitters in the game when he was a player. It's a list of the best hitters that he played with or against enough to really evaluate closely.

    Braun was doped to the gills. Wasn't he the guy who released a statement saying he was the salt of the earth, clean as a whistle-type? So was Ramirez. I know you're a good guy who isn't going to rake dopers through the coals, but from a fan perspective, it really bugs me when our intelligence is insulted by bogus claims of being clean. Believe me, if I was offered millions to play a game I liked and knew the doping rules were pretty lax, I'd jump all over it. all those you mentioned are great players, but the myth of cleanliness is b.s.

      erad67 it bumps your SLG, which will get you more walks, which will raise the OBP. That will automatically boost OPS+. Yes, steroids DO fuck up the league as a whole, and the steroid era proved it. Had it not been for the cheaters, Griffey, Chipper, Thome would all have much higher OPS+ in their careers, Ichiro would also have higher OPS+ (because the league average in OBP and SLG will be significantly lower), and borderline guys like Lofton would be in HHoF. Steroid users are "baseball criminals", and anyone who supports criminals are fucking lunatics.

    • @danejurus69
      @danejurus69 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steroids help make you stronger which increases your bat speed which increases exit velocity which increases distance.
