Swarnamalya is a famous classical dancer, actress and TV anchor. She started learning Bharathanatyam at the age of 3 under Kalaimamani K. J. Sarasa and began performing on-stage from the age of 12. She shot to fame after appearing as an anchor in Sun TV’s show Illamai Pudumai. She made her big-screen debut in Mani Ratnam's Alaipayuthey (2000) movie and also played a pivotal supporting role in Engal Anna (2004) and Mozhi (2007) movies. In this interview, Swarnamalya shares her exciting experience acting in Alaipayuthey movie during her school days.

I totally disagree with what she has to say regarding Bharatanatyam. India is a free nation where anyone is free to learn anything. If a community is not able to pass on their form of art to their own children but other people are interested in learning it, why have a problem with that? That the art itself is alive is the most important thing. No one community can take ownership of an art. If they want to, then they should actively pursue it. Sitting and complaining is not appreciable.

I feel this kind of lifestyle requires immense financial backing. One can move on multiple directions only with that, which unfortunately not everyone has access to. Sangam times there were no temples ? What about Srirangam temple that is mentioned in silapadhikaram? See this is the school that tries to disparage Tamil culture from the rest of India and that is scary to me.
