I saw the house way back in 1989 when a group of colleagues and I went to NP for a long weekend to see the architecture (we were all architects). This house wasn’t open to the public, but saw from the ocean walk. A couple of years ago Ghost Hunters investigated it and were in almost every room looking for spirits.

For so many kids back then in the turbulent 1960's Dark Shadows was our personal escape to place, our fantasy to get away from what was going on in the world. Many hundreds of Baby Boomer Fans and second generation fans have returned to seeing the reruns of the episodes and have joined huge groups dedicated to the show on Facebook like "The Original Dark Shadows Experience" and "Dark Shadows For All" and "Dark Shadows : The Old House" all popular Facebook grps.
Thank you, yes, I feel very fortunate to be able to go see the house whenever I want (it's a hour-long drive, which is nothing). @@AnOlderGayGuyShow For me and literally thousands of DS fans first and second generation on Facebook, the show still has magic for us. The show is part of early TV history when soap operas were not considered very important by the studios. Dark Shadows had a small budget and it was shot in the process called 'Live-to-Tape' which meant, one take only, one chance. No do overs, no retakes , no editing because the network did not have the budget. Back then they could not just stop their video recorder and rewind , it would all have to be edited afterwards and they did not have the budget. What made the show work was that the actors took their roles and the show very very seriously and they stayed in character during the occasional line flubs and prop mishaps and bad lighting and camera problems . It was a challenge So watching them get through it is credit to their acting abilities.
@@thejupiter2574 Yes, today's soap actors would never be able to do the incredible things they did back then in one take. They were amazing. And instead of people calling them out for mistakes and problems, they should be praised considering all the many things that COULD have gone wrong, but their professionalism prevented. Filming the interior would be fantastic, but I know that would be asking for too much. There is a Robert Redford film from 2017 called 'The Discovery'. It was filmed at the house. You see most of the exterior from various angles and you see a lot of the interior of the house in the film. But you should def go visit it sometimes. It is amazing to see it in person. There are so many fans who see the show from different perspectives, they love the unintentional humor from the live taping which captured the bloopers n blunders and they consider the unintentional humor to be high camp today.
Here in Boston we would have Dark Shadows come on at 4:00 pm and then at 4:30 pm we could change the channel to a New Hampshire station and watch the day before's episode. It was near the Lyndhurst Mansion (used as Collinwood in 'House of Dark Shadows' and 'Night of Dark Shadows' films). Seeing Seaview Terrace/Collinwood: I'm back in 1970 when I would dash home from school to watch "Dark Shadows". At 5:35 is the rock formation we see the same one that is in the opening credits of "Dark Shadows"?
It was a great time to be a school kid. I guess I never thought about the title shot. I think I assumed that it was some 'Hollywood' graphic (no computers back then though), but it made sense that they probably got the shots while they were filming exteriors in Season 1. Boy, back then I used to write letters to TV shows quite a bit, and while you may not have gotten a response from a star, you would always gets a response. I wrote to KQED about "Upstairs Downstairs" and I got a lot of photos. I write KBHK about the late night TV moster movie host "The Ghoul" and I got pictures sent back. It was really something back then because it took an effort to write a letter, find the address, get the stamps and mail it and if you were lucky, a few weeks later you'd get a real handwritten or typed response. I wrote authors and toy companies and celebrites (who never personally answered of course). But before email and the internet, it was really special. My mom was a secretary and was a big "letter to the editor" writer, so I copied her. I think the internet has really cheapened contacting people when it takes almost no effort on the part of the writer at all to Twitter or email or Instagram, etc etc etc....(btw, I lived in the San Francisco area, so the channels I mentioned were local channels before cable of course. At least we couldn't afford it).
Writing letters like that are a lost art. I did write to a few stars back in those days, but as bad as the internet can be, I have found myself following and even messaging back-and-forth with secondary players or lesser known stars that I never would have had a chance to talk to (to type to) them without the magical computer keys. (IMO, the DVDs never _quite_ matched the quality of the episodes as shown by Jim Pierson from the original video cartridges at the DS fests back in the early-90s.) If my math is correct (iffy), at 2X the video quality of the DVDs they’d _still_ be able to fit twice as many episodes per Blu-Ray disk. I _hope_ it happens someday!

I always thought the Scooby-Do house looked like it. It even had the tower. Wow, fun to know it really was that. When I was a kid and Dark Shadows was on the air, I wrote a letter to the owner of the house and got invited down to see it. My Mom wouldn't take me that far (a bit over an hour from me). Then in High School, I drove down and a friend and I barged into the reception desk at the back door for the college that rented it at the time. I talked them into letting us go in the music room (the room to the left with the lights on in the dark foggy show opening). I'd love to stay there sometime. I didn't know you could do that. Mr. Carey's daughter is selling it now (completely restored, I heard) for something like $30 million. If I won the lottery, I always planned on buying it and once a year have an open house with a Dark Shadows fan party on the lawn. I'm such a dreamer. ~Joey
I liked this one. But I thought THE OLD HOUSE looked more historical. It hurt to read that it burnt down in 1967 from arson. Such a beauty. I watched your last video. I think it was yours, where you actually filmed the inside of this beautiful house. It was so different inside. Is this mansion haunted like on the show? I know the show was a work of fiction but it would be interesting to hear about the past on stars that never left Collingwood. I watched from age 4.Still watching today at 60. Great show, even with technology in it's infancy then. Now it would be nothing to recreate with VGI and all. I read you can't even get on the land where THE OLD HOUSE was. It is protected land. I would love to dig in the Earth and see what is left behind(pieces of wood, maybe the door knocker, pieces of the house that didn't go where they put the remains of that one beautiful piece of history. Someday, I would like to visit this one also. If I ever get rich I would be trying for it. Is it really a 15 minute walk from The Old House(well now it would be the land where it was). I bet the owners had to gate it off to stop us fans from just wanting to take home a rock from this beauty.

That property (The Spratt Mansion) is actually a short walk from The Lydhurst Mansion and Estate, which was the house used as Collinwood in the two Dark Shadows feature films: House of Dark Shadows and Night of Dark Shadows. @@joshhorvath7151 I don't remember how I first came to know about Mr. Carey owning the mansion. Maybe from an article or something since it was the late 1960's. He owned it for many years, although he rented it out to The Newport School for Girls and then Salve Regina College. He didn't use it at all for a few decades. He passed away and then his adult daughter took control of it about 10 years ago or so, cancelling the rental to Salve Regina. His daughter spent several years restoring the house for the damage the rentals had done, and now the mansion is actually for sale. It can be yours for the low, low price of $29.9 MILLION DOLLARS ! @@AnOlderGayGuyShow will I have some amazing news my fiance Chelsea who served 12 years and the United States Air Force she came back from her found appointment and we went to Rhode Island New York and we went to go see the Dark Shadows house and we're cruising along and we stopped just like what I might stop the car stop the car so we get out she's like what is this I'm like this is the house from Dark Shadows I explained over where it comes with all this is cool what little did we know the gardener was out there cutting the grass and we flag them down he's like hey guys how you doing hey wow we were wondering I know I'm a big fan of Dark Shadows I showed him my Barnabas Collins cane so that's really cool I'll tell you what you guys want to come inside and see the actual house like yeah sure so he invited us in we walked around we saw the big painting of Barnabas Collins with the cane we saw everything it was really really cool and that's where I proposed to my my fiance Chelsea right there in the in the drawing room I have pictures of me doing it and she started to cry and she said yes

I visited the outside of the house and grounds in 1991 and maybe 1993. You could still go on the grounds back then. I saw a golf ball laying on the grass and put it in my pocket. Still have it. Maybe it belonged to "Roger Collins?"

The inside was drastically changed during the period when the mansion was leased to The Newport School for Girls, and then again when it was leased to Salve Regina College. It is in Newport, Rhode Island and has been owned by the Carey family from at least the 1960's. Carey's daughter took over the mansion 10 years or so ago and has been restoring it back to its original plan. There are videos on TH-cam showing the interior of the mansion, as well as external and interior shots of the house can be seen in the 2017 film 'The Discovery', starring Robert Redford. @An Older Gay Guy Show BTW the image of the house shown in your video is actually the 'rear' of the house. This part of the house with the famous terrace and the two towers, that is the rear of the house facing the ocean. The front of the house has a circular drive way with a covered entrance , a porte cochere . The house has several sides to it. The smaller tower in the on the left side is part of the front right side of the house and the entrance to that smaller tower faces the parking lot of the house . There is a paranormal investigation TV show maybe from the SyFy channel where two different episodes had investigators filming an episode at this house which is now called the Carey mansion. Back in the 1960's is was a girl's school called Salve Regina? / Seaview Terrace. Sadly, the students caused a lot of damage to the house.
Yes, I know about it being the backside of the house. Obviously, it is much more striking from this side. I did a podcast episode talking about when Mr. Carey invited me down to the house. It is a shame what they did to the house to convert it for The Newport School for Girls and then Salve Regina. The exterior and interior was also shot in a Robert Redford film a few years ago. In the sixties it was a summer school called Burnham by the Sea. It was owned and run by the family whose school year school was Mary Burnham School in Massachusetts.
@@deborahserrano5685 I remember it being the girl's school. It was considered a very posh school like a finishing school for elite girls. Then Mr. Carey did a long-term lease to Salve Regina College. It was probably 10 years ago or so that the Carey family decided to restore it to its original condition. I saw how they had literally put up walls to make the individual dorm rooms. They separated the beautiful woodwork that ran through the rooms with the stupid partitions. Hopefully it wasn't too hard to restore them. As a kid, I always dreamed of owning 'Collinwood' and I would have an annual Dark Shadows grand party on the lawn. As an adult, I realize the problems that I would cause myself by letting so many people onto the property. You might be interested in a Dark Shadows Facebook grp. made especially for the Gay fans of the show called "Queer Shadows -gay fans of Dark Shadows." Trivia: There were about seven or eight people associated with the TV show who happened to have been Gay , and one Lesbian. It's not important to the show but it's important to the fans and it's important historically in TV history, because back then at the time , people who were gay could have lost their jobs if their orientation had been revealed. They could have legally been fired from working on a family orientated TV show back then under the rules of the 'TV Codes of Practices and Standards' that early TV shows were suppose to follow. Also on Facebook there are two groups or a group and a page that are dedicated to this house. I think one is called Edison Bradley's Seaview Terrace and the other group on Facebook is called "Fans of Carey Mansion / Seaview Terrace " both FB grps about the house have many many wonderful pictures of both the interior and of the exterior of the mansion. The house is dearly loved by very passionate, die-hard fans. The pictures are all amazing.

Thank you, yes, I feel very fortunate to be able to go see the house whenever I want (it's a hour-long drive, which is nothing). @@AnOlderGayGuyShow For me and literally thousands of DS fans first and second generation on Facebook, the show still has magic for us. The show is part of early TV history when soap operas were not considered very important by the studios. Dark Shadows had a small budget and it was shot in the process called 'Live-to-Tape' which meant, one take only, one chance. No do overs, no retakes , no editing because the network did not have the budget. Back then they could not just stop their video recorder and rewind , it would all have to be edited afterwards and they did not have the budget.
What made the show work was that the actors took their roles and the show very very seriously and they stayed in character during the occasional line flubs and prop mishaps and bad lighting and camera problems . It was a challenge So watching them get through it is credit to their acting abilities.
@@thejupiter2574 Yes, today's soap actors would never be able to do the incredible things they did back then in one take. They were amazing. And instead of people calling them out for mistakes and problems, they should be praised considering all the many things that COULD have gone wrong, but their professionalism prevented. Thanks Thomas. So glad you enjoyed seeing the house. I wish I could have been allowed to walk around it and film it from all sides. Filming the interior would be fantastic, but I know that would be asking for too much. There is a Robert Redford film from 2017 called 'The Discovery'. It was filmed at the house. You see most of the exterior from various angles and you see a lot of the interior of the house in the film. But you should def go visit it sometimes. It is amazing to see it in person. You can see all 'five' years of the Dark Shadows TV show reruns on such video streaming services as Tubi TV .com and on Plex TV and thru Amazon Prime and on the IMDB site and some episodes , three of the five years, shown on Pluto TV and on The Decades Channel but most of the Dark Shadows Fans on Facebook watch the reruns thru Tubi TV and Amazon Prime. It's fun to go back to our younger days and relive or watch what gave us such thrills n chills back then. :)
@@AnOlderGayGuyShow yeah, I'm so glad i saw the show as a kid with wide eyed amazement. I just took it ll in. Today I still love it but am not as patient. There are so many fans who see the show from different perspectives, they love the unintentional humor from the live taping which captured the bloopers n blunders and they consider the unintentional humor to be high camp today.

I would rush home from middle school to make sure I could watch Dark Shadows…..and the the 4:30 movie afterwards before dinner.
Here in Boston we would have Dark Shadows come on at 4:00 pm and then at 4:30 pm we could change the channel to a New Hampshire station and watch the day before's episode. So we got to see each episode twice, or if we had something going on that we missed a day, we could see it in the New Hampshire broadcast the next day. Thanks so much for the comment, Mark! ~Joey

The mansion used for exteriors of 'The Old House' in the Dark Shadows original 1960's tv show unfortunately burned to the ground in 1969. It was near the Lyndhurst Mansion (used as Collinwood in 'House of Dark Shadows' and 'Night of Dark Shadows' films). Seeing Seaview Terrace/Collinwood: I'm back in 1970 when I would dash home from school to watch "Dark Shadows". At 5:35 is the rock formation we see the same one that is in the opening credits of "Dark Shadows"?
It was a great time to be a school kid. I guess I never thought about the title shot. I think I assumed that it was some 'Hollywood' graphic (no computers back then though), but it made sense that they probably got the shots while they were filming exteriors in Season 1. Boy, back then I used to write letters to TV shows quite a bit, and while you may not have gotten a response from a star, you would always gets a response. I wrote to KQED about "Upstairs Downstairs" and I got a lot of photos. I write KBHK about the late night TV moster movie host "The Ghoul" and I got pictures sent back. It was really something back then because it took an effort to write a letter, find the address, get the stamps and mail it and if you were lucky, a few weeks later you'd get a real handwritten or typed response. I wrote authors and toy companies and celebrites (who never personally answered of course). But before email and the internet, it was really special. My mom was a secretary and was a big "letter to the editor" writer, so I copied her. I think the internet has really cheapened contacting people when it takes almost no effort on the part of the writer at all to Twitter or email or Instagram, etc etc etc....(btw, I lived in the San Francisco area, so the channels I mentioned were local channels before cable of course. At least we couldn't afford it).
Writing letters like that are a lost art. I did write to a few stars back in those days, but as bad as the internet can be, I have found myself following and even messaging back-and-forth with secondary players or lesser known stars that I never would have had a chance to talk to (to type to) them without the magical computer keys. Did you ever receive a reply back from a star that you could tell was actually written and/or signed themselves? And who did you get? Thanks for the comment, Paula! ~Joey

@@AnOlderGayGuyShow I’d love to see them DOUBLE the video quality if they release it on Blu-Ray! (IMO, the DVDs never _quite_ matched the quality of the episodes as shown by Jim Pierson from the original video cartridges at the DS fests back in the early-90s.) If my math is correct (iffy), at 2X the video quality of the DVDs they’d _still_ be able to fit twice as many episodes per Blu-Ray disk. I _hope_ it happens someday!

@Mr Square Art If you do see the show at some point, just keep in mind that it was done back in the day on a low budget with a one take only policy, show live to tape which makes it exciting to watch the actors get through some scenes that have mishaps in them . The house is amazing on the inside. You can actually stay there as a guest. Also it was in the opening credits of Scooby Doo although animated.
I always thought the Scooby-Do house looked like it. It even had the tower. Wow, fun to know it really was that. When I was a kid and Dark Shadows was on the air, I wrote a letter to the owner of the house and got invited down to see it. My Mom wouldn't take me that far (a bit over an hour from me). Then in High School, I drove down and a friend and I barged into the reception desk at the back door for the college that rented it at the time. I talked them into letting us go in the music room (the room to the left with the lights on in the dark foggy show opening). I'd love to stay there sometime. I didn't know you could do that. Mr. Carey's daughter is selling it now (completely restored, I heard) for something like $30 million. If I won the lottery, I always planned on buying it and once a year have an open house with a Dark Shadows fan party on the lawn. I'm such a dreamer. ~Joey

Great show, even with technology in it's infancy then. Now it would be nothing to recreate with VGI and all.
I read you can't even get on the land where THE OLD HOUSE was. It is protected land.
I would love to dig in the Earth and see what is left behind(pieces of wood, maybe the door knocker, pieces of the house that didn't go where they put the remains of that one beautiful piece of history.

@@hollyprincipato3287 You can't access the interior unless you make an arrangement for a tour, and I'm not sure how you would go about that. It is a shame that The Old House burned down. That property (The Spratt Mansion) is actually a short walk from The Lydhurst Mansion and Estate, which was the house used as Collinwood in the two Dark Shadows feature films: House of Dark Shadows and Night of Dark Shadows. I'm jealous. That's awesome! I recently got an inferior reproduction of the cane. It isn't comfortable to use. Someday maybe the cane you got could be used for mobility. How did you find out about the original owner who own the house from Dark Shadows because who owns it today is the original owner still alive
@@joshhorvath7151 I don't remember how I first came to know about Mr. Carey owning the mansion. Maybe from an article or something since it was the late 1960's. He owned it for many years, although he rented it out to The Newport School for Girls and then Salve Regina College. He didn't use it at all for a few decades. He passed away and then his adult daughter took control of it about 10 years ago or so, cancelling the rental to Salve Regina. His daughter spent several years restoring the house for the damage the rentals had done, and now the mansion is actually for sale. It can be yours for the low, low price of $29.9 MILLION DOLLARS ! @@AnOlderGayGuyShow will I have some amazing news my fiance Chelsea who served 12 years and the United States Air Force she came back from her found appointment and we went to Rhode Island New York and we went to go see the Dark Shadows house and we're cruising along and we stopped just like what I might stop the car stop the car so we get out she's like what is this I'm like this is the house from Dark Shadows I explained over where it comes with all this is cool what little did we know the gardener was out there cutting the grass and we flag them down he's like hey guys how you doing hey wow we were wondering I know I'm a big fan of Dark Shadows I showed him my Barnabas Collins cane so that's really cool I'll tell you what you guys want to come inside and see the actual house like yeah sure so he invited us in we walked around we saw the big painting of Barnabas Collins with the cane we saw everything it was really really cool and that's where I proposed to my my fiance Chelsea right there in the in the drawing room I have pictures of me doing it and she started to cry and she said yes

I visited the outside of the house and grounds in 1991 and maybe 1993. You could still go on the grounds back then. I saw a golf ball
laying on the grass and put it in my pocket. Still have it. Maybe it belonged to "Roger Collins?"

The inside was drastically changed during the period when the mansion was leased to The Newport School for Girls, and then again when it was leased to Salve Regina College. It is in Newport, Rhode Island and has been owned by the Carey family from at least the 1960's. Carey's daughter took over the mansion 10 years or so ago and has been restoring it back to its original plan. There are videos on TH-cam showing the interior of the mansion, as well as external and interior shots of the house can be seen in the 2017 film 'The Discovery', starring Robert Redford. It used to be a residence hall for Salve Regina University. The students who lived there must have had a ball.
They kinda trashed it a bit. I guess there was a fair amount of damage, especially to the woodwork.

Once you didn't want to use it for awhile, close the house or do something better than letting a bunch of 18-21 year olds take over the place. It was just a dormitory. @An Older Gay Guy Show BTW the image of the house shown in your video is actually the 'rear' of the house. This part of the house with the famous terrace and the two towers, that is the rear of the house facing the ocean. The front of the house has a circular drive way with a covered entrance , a porte cochere . The house has several sides to it. The smaller tower in the on the left side is part of the front right side of the house and the entrance to that smaller tower faces the parking lot of the house . There is a paranormal investigation TV show maybe from the SyFy channel where two different episodes had investigators filming an episode at this house which is now called the Carey mansion. Back in the 1960's is was a girl's school called Salve Regina? / Seaview Terrace. Sadly, the students caused a lot of damage to the house.
Yes, I know about it being the backside of the house. Obviously, it is much more striking from this side. I did a podcast episode talking about when Mr. Carey invited me down to the house. It is a shame what they did to the house to convert it for The Newport School for Girls and then Salve Regina. The exterior and interior was also shot in a Robert Redford film a few years ago. In the sixties it was a summer school called Burnham by the Sea. It was owned and run by the family whose school year school was Mary Burnham School in Massachusetts.
@@deborahserrano5685 I remember it being the girl's school. It was considered a very posh school like a finishing school for elite girls. Then Mr. Carey did a long-term lease to Salve Regina College. It was probably 10 years ago or so that the Carey family decided to restore it to its original condition. I saw how they had literally put up walls to make the individual dorm rooms. They separated the beautiful woodwork that ran through the rooms with the stupid partitions. Hopefully it wasn't too hard to restore them. As a kid, I always dreamed of owning 'Collinwood' and I would have an annual Dark Shadows grand party on the lawn. As an adult, I realize the problems that I would cause myself by letting so many people onto the property. You might be interested in a Dark Shadows Facebook grp. made especially for the Gay fans of the show called "Queer Shadows -gay fans of Dark Shadows." Trivia: There were about seven or eight people associated with the TV show who happened to have been Gay , and one Lesbian.
It's not important to the show but it's important to the fans and it's important historically in TV history, because back then at the time , people who were gay could have lost their jobs if their orientation had been revealed. They could have legally been fired from working on a family orientated TV show back then under the rules of the 'TV Codes of Practices and Standards' that early TV shows were suppose to follow.
Also on Facebook there are two groups or a group and a page that are dedicated to this house. I think one is called Edison Bradley's Seaview Terrace and the other group on Facebook is called
"Fans of Carey Mansion / Seaview Terrace " both FB grps about the house have many many wonderful pictures of both the interior and of the exterior of the mansion. The house is dearly loved by very passionate, die-hard fans. The pictures are all amazing.
