I'm just saying the problem with what she did, I don't know if it was right or not, where I live it definitely would have been illegal to keep the turtle in your home like she does, maybe why I feel like this about the situation, I know not all countries have as strict laws about disturbing the nature.

Lots of people take tarantulas from the wild to breed them in captivity, then they let them go back to the wild. I had a pet fox from the wild once because it was abandoned by it's mother and I knew what I was doing. If people don't do their research, that's not Kat's fault.

I found a black widow on my porch yesterday and thanks to you I knew it was in death curl. I took the opportunity to show it to my little boys, I explained they are the only medically significant spider we have in Colorado and showed them the hourglass to look for. It's pretty cool to know all this stuff, I used to be so scared of spiders
The only concern I have with the death curl is black widows play dead! I've caught several black widows and kept 2 as outdoor "pets" during the summer (I also live in colorado!) And if you stress them out they play dead😭
At the beginning if the summer we had a huge snapping turtle (at least around 35+ pounds) in the pond on our property, and we named her Big Ronda (dont actually know if it’s a female, that’s just the name we picked). She vanished for a while, and I figured she had died, but then after a couple months of no turtle, I found her way up the creek in a shallow spot that’s always swarming with bullfrogs! I’ve seen her several times since then, she goes back and forth between the pond and that spot to eat. I’m not an expert or anything but I think you should definitely keep the turtle over the winter, it would be such a waste if you released it and it didn’t make it. I say do whatever gives it the best chance of survival.
A few years ago I saw a common snapping turtle on a sidewalk in a Delaware state park. I scooped him up and carried him to a river and let him go. Yr snapper is a cutie!
One of the best pets I ever had was a common snapper. He was the friendliest amphibious dinosaur who free roamed the house with my cats when he wasn't in his giant tank. He now lives in an outdoor nature sanctuary in Montreal where he's the biggest of over a hundred turtles. Since you found him so young, as long as you keep handling him and talking to him regularly, I don't think you'll have any trouble getting him to tame right down. I never fed him live food because i think it makes them a bit aggressive. I fed him a varied diet, but his very favorite food was trout chow pellets. The one bit of advice I can give is be very careful of impaction issues from aquarium gravel and small stones... that was an expensive vet trip! Good luck!
From my experience sometimes it’s hard to get a rehabber to take an animal if it’s a non-endangered/nuisance animal because a lot of times they are overwhelmed. But if you want to give him the best chance it would probably be nice to keep him over winter and release in the spring, if you can’t find a wildlife rehab to take him that is. Lol I know he’s in a different state but you could always ask @The Urban Rescue Ranch

I uncovered a clutch of red eared sliders while landscaping a home. I put all the eggs, 22, in my lunch box and took them home. I housed them in an aquarium, buried in sand and kept it the same temp as outside. They all hatched! I fed them for a few weeks, then released them back into the lake they were laid near.
I had an October hatchling snapper a couple years ago that taught me that they also like to burrow under dry bedding material to sleep/hide. Gave her a choice of a dry section and a water area. Used both as she wanted.
My kids brought me a baby snapper home. He was never friendly, but he loved feeder fish!! Also helps their natural predatory instincts. We released him after a year in a half and his carapace was about 6 inches.
@Kat I've dealt with various species of turtles, but one reoccurring thing seems similar. When turtles aren't doing well they start to smell like spoiled milk.
Yeah, here in Hawaii if you even just touch a turtle or take a picture with one... you WILL be fined and or imprisoned! Most tourist do not know this. Locals used to catch & eat these but they are very protected now so listen to T Kat & do check laws before you act! Great video Kat!
Oh wow, that's incredible! Especially since I found a hatching in the exact same state as you did,as well as him being named Bowser. My little cousins named him. I found him outside my workplace and his eyes were really sunken in.. He improved, started eating well, and grew quite fast in a 6 week period. A couple people insisted I let him go since he was doing well and it was still a while until it started cooling off. I felt it wasn't a good idea to release him, although I am sure he is doing fine. Its been a year and a half since I had him. Sounds like you have good plans for him. Great that you saved him! 🙂

I USED TO LOVE WHEN BILL WOULD WRAP HIS TAIL ON MY HAND LIKE YOURS DID. I MISSED HIM SO MUCH WHEN I RELEASED HIM BUT HE WAS RELEASED RIGHT ACROSS THE LAWN OF MY APARTMENT IN THE COMMUNITY LAKE SO HE HAD TO BE HAPPY. LOTS OF OTHER WILDLIFE OVER THERE.
The little turtle might be different towards you if you raise it, like raccoons and opossums. However, once it gets bigger you would have to have a big enclosure for it. He’s so cute. I’m so glad ya’ll were able to save it. He’s enclosure looks great. BTW, you are probably aware, but to anyone that has dogs or cats pathos is very poisons to them, and you never know when they may decided to take a bite. I decided I wanted some house plants, and I have to check every plant to see if it’s poisons to cats before I buy it.
My sister in laws cousin jumped in a lake to "save" a turtle. Instead of her and my brother telling her to put it back, she kept it. But left it at their apartment for over a year. My bf and I found it while helping my bro clean and move. In a bowl. Food bowl. So we now care for her. She has tripled in size since she got into a proper tank and had food. He didn't tell me how long she was kept like that but the water was gunky and low. She had no space to swim. I'm glad I found her when I did.

He would feed it gold fish and it would snap at our fingers when we poked the glass. It's name was godzilla but then he released it by the time we graduated. Probably for the best since they're illegal in MO
Found a baby snapper a few years ago in the middle of the road, no bodies of water around for miles, figured a bird might have grabbed him, ended up taking him down to the nearest river.

Growing up in Louisiana all my life, my backyard was literally a little spot of grass & trees & the rest was swampland so my childhood was mostly of me living/playing in the swamp...LITERALLY! My mama also loved all animals so my little front yard which was a decent size but was by no means LARGE at all but someway somehow my mama kept a shite ton of random animals from parrots, ducks, chickens, iguanas, ferrets, goats, peacocks, rabbits, hamsters, flying squirrels, & I even had a few chinchillas & so so much more it was really ridiculous lol but some were kept inside & others were left to roam our front yard but being we literally lived on the swamp meant we also had a backyard full of wild animals that would come back often & allow us to hold/pet them so much so that we oddly got close to a wild gator over the years because we fed her real good everyday but NEVER touched or got close to her. At one point she had babies. Well, shortly after she had her babies, one night while she was off to feed, I assumed she was hunted & killed because she never came back BUT one of her newborns did for a few weeks & it would never leave the bank (land) so we took her & raised her to a 11 ft gator over 12 years & she is now with our local zoo where she's been for about 5. We kept her for many years & though we never let our guard down with her, she was never aggressive with us other than when we were feeding her only because she was seriously fat & spoiled on chicken or pork meat. Her name is Evangeline & It nice that I can take my children from time to time to see the gator their mama raised at their ages! She is absolutely ENORMOUS now! We also raised a baby alligator snapping turtle for about 6 years until he got too dam big to keep anymore so we released him back into the swamp where we found him & yes, he is still there till this day! His name is Beignet because I love Beignets & also cause he always reminded me of a beignet that was round & fat😂😂 We weighed him 2 years ago & at that time he was about 22inches & 109lbs mind you he is not full grown yet but we were told constantly feeding him whole chickens is the cause of insane growth! A zoo in Arkansas offered to pay us to "house" him at their sanctuary after they found out somehow (I still dont know til this day) that he was not only passed the point of me being unable to keep & care for him on my property but also largely to the fact of how insanely huge this big guy was! Their whole pitch about caring for him etc etc & the $$$ offer was far more than what i had ever been offered but looong before he even made the pitch, like when he said he was the director at a Zoo I literally already knew my answer! I would NEVER put any animal in a zoo or sanctuary UNLESS there was absolutely NO other option! I knew when I first got him as a tiny turtle that when he got to be too much to handle, he WAS going back to his home & that's where he has been HAPPILY for quite a while now! I even still get the awesome privilege to sit on the porch at night & talk to him while he's just chillin on the bank lolol!!! By far out of ALL animals/Pets I ever had in my lifetime, My Gator, Gator snapping turtle, my parrots & my chinchilla were the most favored & loved of all!

My buddy just found one half dead and I've been nursing him back to health he also had the yoke still attached. It's been about 2 weeks and he'd already eating pinkies.
@Kat you should talk to Clint from Clint's Reptiles. He might talk you into keeping your turtle, but he is also an incredibly reasonable and trustworthy conservationist. I do happen to know that common snapping turtles have resistance to the cold, which is why they are more prolific. Also, common snapping turtles have a much better personality than alligator snappers. They are more active and they don't snap at you if you know how to handle them (from under the plastron, holding the tail). Clint's turtle is actually really personable. Also... I'm not sure yours is a common snapping turtle. At that size, the easiest way to tell is the length of the neck. You probably already know this... but I will do what I do best as a tutor and overexplain for the sake of not making assumptions about how much anybody really knows about anything. :P Alligator snappers can't really stretch their necks out and rely on ambush tactics to feed. They even have a little aposematic tongue that mimics a worm so that fish swim up to their mouth and get chomped. That's different than common snappers, which have a long neck that extends out quickly and their snap isn't so... devastating. They actually have a really cool feeding method, which is creating a hydraulic vacuum with their throats, sucking in prey. It makes them more convergently similar to mata mata turtles. Also, common snappers have a more varied diet and will eat some plant matter. So it's important to observe which one you're dealing with for diet purposes. Also, there are distinctly different laws for each animal. I believe Missouri has culling orders on one of the species and they can fine you for keeping it if it's the invasive one. I don't have the right or moral turpitude to probe or advise further, but it sounds like you're doing what you need to be a good wildlife conservationist.

Mud is also really beneficial for them, they like to burry themselves in it. It also helps prevent skin ailments. (I'v watch a lot of Kamp Kenan videos lol)

I would probably done the same thing and bring it home.. if it had been moving and more responsive instead of lethargic like Bowser, I probably would have moved it closer to the water and let nature take it's course. Another caution, wash your hands very thoroughly after handling it, or having your hands in the enclosure water. Turtles can have a lot of various bacteria that can make you ill. I never had a turtle but my sister had one for awhile. It was quite cute. I like your channel.

I live near snapping turtles and I do know how big they get and how mean they could get too. But it’s so amazing how your saving this little baby I would do the same to save him
My roommate has a snapping turtle that is about a foot in length with just his shell, and him and I are good friends! I go and visit him and he swims right up to me wanting snacks 😋💖

Growing up in Louisiana all my life, my backyard was literally a little spot of grass & trees & the rest was swampland so my childhood was mostly of me living/playing in the swamp...LITERALLY! My mama also loved all animals so my little front yard which was a decent size but was by no means LARGE at all but someway somehow my mama kept a shite ton of random animals from parrots, ducks, chickens, iguanas, ferrets, goats, peacocks, rabbits, hamsters, flying squirrels, & I even had a few chinchillas & so so much more it was really ridiculous lol but some were kept inside & others were left to roam our front yard but being we literally lived on the swamp meant we also had a backyard full of wild animals that would come back often & allow us to hold/pet them so much so that we oddly got close to a wild gator over the years because we fed her real good everyday but NEVER touched or got close to her. At one point she had babies. Well, shortly after she had her babies, one night while she was off to feed, I assumed she was hunted & killed because she never came back BUT one of her newborns did for a few weeks & it would never leave the bank (land) so we took her & raised her to a 11 ft gator over 12 years & she is now with our local zoo where she's been for about 5. We kept her for many years & though we never let our guard down with her, she was never aggressive with us other than when we were feeding her only because she was seriously fat & spoiled on chicken or pork meat. Her name is Evangeline & It nice that I can take my children from time to time to see the gator their mama raised at their ages! She is absolutely ENORMOUS now! We also raised a baby alligator snapping turtle for about 6 years until he got too dam big to keep anymore so we released him back into the swamp where we found him & yes, he is still there till this day! His name is Beignet because I love Beignets & also cause he always reminded me of a beignet that was round & fat😂😂 We weighed him 2 years ago & at that time he was about 22inches & 109lbs mind you he is not full grown yet but we were told constantly feeding him whole chickens is the cause of insane growth! A zoo in Arkansas offered to pay us to "house" him at their sanctuary after they found out somehow (I still dont know til this day) that he was not only passed the point of me being unable to keep & care for him on my property but also largely to the fact of how insanely huge this big guy was! Their whole pitch about caring for him etc etc & the $$$ offer was far more than what i had ever been offered but looong before he even made the pitch, like when he said he was the director at a Zoo I literally already knew my answer! I would NEVER put any animal in a zoo or sanctuary UNLESS there was absolutely NO other option! I knew when I first got him as a tiny turtle that when he got to be too much to handle, he WAS going back to his home & that's where he has been HAPPILY for quite a while now! I even still get the awesome privilege to sit on the porch at night & talk to him while he's just chillin on the bank lolol!!! By far out of ALL animals/Pets I ever had in my lifetime, My Gator, Gator snapping turtle, my parrots & my chinchilla were the most favored & loved of all!
I had a baby snapping turtle for a year and then my dog took it out of the cage when I had it outside and I never saw it since. U can feed them anything and they grow so big haha

I grew up in the country down around Bonne Terre, and I would run from Snappers when I'd come across them, LOL, even though they are cool, I was always afraid of getting 'SNAPPED' LOL
My buddy just found one half dead and I've been nursing him back to health he also had the yoke still attached. It's been about 2 weeks and he'd already eating pinkies.

@Kat you should talk to Clint from Clint's Reptiles. He might talk you into keeping your turtle, but he is also an incredibly reasonable and trustworthy conservationist. I do happen to know that common snapping turtles have resistance to the cold, which is why they are more prolific. Also, common snapping turtles have a much better personality than alligator snappers. They are more active and they don't snap at you if you know how to handle them (from under the plastron, holding the tail). Clint's turtle is actually really personable. Also... I'm not sure yours is a common snapping turtle. At that size, the easiest way to tell is the length of the neck. You probably already know this... but I will do what I do best as a tutor and overexplain for the sake of not making assumptions about how much anybody really knows about anything. :P
Alligator snappers can't really stretch their necks out and rely on ambush tactics to feed. They even have a little aposematic tongue that mimics a worm so that fish swim up to their mouth and get chomped. That's different than common snappers, which have a long neck that extends out quickly and their snap isn't so... devastating. They actually have a really cool feeding method, which is creating a hydraulic vacuum with their throats, sucking in prey. It makes them more convergently similar to mata mata turtles. Also, common snappers have a more varied diet and will eat some plant matter. So it's important to observe which one you're dealing with for diet purposes. Also, there are distinctly different laws for each animal. I believe Missouri has culling orders on one of the species and they can fine you for keeping it if it's the invasive one. I don't have the right or moral turpitude to probe or advise further, but it sounds like you're doing what you need to be a good wildlife conservationist.

Well shoot, I'd found a baby snapper about two weeks ago and named him Bowser too. I'm guessing that's the most common name people give to snappers, so I'll have to change it now 😅

I cared for a baby snapper 2 years ago that was in a similar state of health. Fortunately for him there were plenty of red headed bush crickets always in my yard so I managed to catch a few. He didn't eat them at first but eventually he took to them. I released him back after he seemed to be doing better. I love that you added multiple disclaimers!

I would probably done the same thing and bring it home.. if it had been moving and more responsive instead of lethargic like Bowser, I probably would have moved it closer to the water and let nature take it's course.
Another caution, wash your hands very thoroughly after handling it, or having your hands in the enclosure water. Turtles can have a lot of various bacteria that can make you ill.
I never had a turtle but my sister had one for awhile. It was quite cute.

Oh my gosh Kat.. I have one of these, he hatched last october 6 really late. He wouldnt have made it so i took him in. hes about to turn a year old and he is my baby. Hes like a little dog. His name is Gaston Scambles Beauregard and I absolutely adore him
