Great post and thank you... the correct spelling in Irish is Ard Uí Chuain. The townland of Ard ui chuain (ardicoan) is near the beach at Cushendal Ballymena Co.Antrim in Northern Ireland. You can see Scotland from here. This is a poem by the peasant poet John McCambridge who was born in 1793 in Mullarts, near Glendun Co. Antrim and died in 1873.
I knew the song very well, and, tonight, when I watched Patriot's Game on television, I wanted to hear the song, so I came to TH-cam, and discovered, not only the videos of versions I had heard before, but this extended version of the movie's theme music. Delightful!
Heard this as the opening theme Of the movie "Patriot Games". Beautiful song, thanks for the link to the English translation from Gaelic. Are there many left who speak the language? Thanks.
No problem, thank you too. Yes, many people still speak it. Unfortunately only a few thousand speak it as a first language, on a day to day basis. These are in the extreme last fingers of Ireland, and on the islands, from the extreme South West, up to North West . We all learn it as a second language in school throughout Ireland. But to be brutal and truthful, about only 2 in 100 could hold a good conversation. I speak it,and in my village, only 2 other men can. So we do it when we can, but then you find in social situations it is rude to be exclusive in company, so it gives way to English very readily. I know its basic, but here's a good map of it.......kids.kiddle.co/Gaeltacht

This version of the song was recorded for the 1992 film 'Patriot Games' it is sung by Maggie Boyle. Its a faithful version of the original Gaelic. In English, the air is often called "The quiet land of Erin" and English language versions by that title have been composed, but are not direct translations of the original Gaelic. I had to cut/paste/splice two or three versions from the soundtrack, to get it to play as one complete song with the music. Ireland is undergoing a major demographic shift. Consequently, Ireland’s culture will change. Im not saying that is good or bad. Its just a fact. When you visit Ireland in 30 years it will no longer be a quaint quiet place with pubs and churches and stone walls. It will be heavily commercialized and modern with high crime…just like England.
Have never been to Ireland but when I hear this song it sounds like....a lover from a past life calling you home.
Only she might kill you.

There are people in the Gaeltacht region of Ireland, the west of Ireland, who definitely speak the language, who are devoted to preserving it.
