- About 6 months ago I began the process of waxing my old Carhartt jacket. It took more Otter Wax than I had originally anticipated and much more effort, however I pushed through and finished the project. This is the followup to that video where I share my thoughts on the process, what I would change, and if I'd do it again.

you could of made your own wax for a fraction of the cost ,bees wax spirit of gum oil and boiled linseed oil ,and just use a paint brush to apply the liquid wax

When doing this method you need 16oz mineral spirits
16oz linseed oil
5-6 oz of beeswax
Melt it all together, paint it on, hang to dry for a week, and then go over the whole thing with a heat gun. EZPZ
Also do this outside due to risk of fire
I’d like to see you give a cheap wax a try. Like turtle wax!
Here's how I was taught to do it. Using bees wax that's been chilled in the freezer, I grate the wax and distribute the flakes evenly over the area being worked. With a layer of aluminum foil on the ironing board to reflect heat and protect the board's surface and another layer placed over the wax, a clothes iron on high is used to melt and spread the wax across the surface of the clothing item you're working on. This process is fast and requires no expensive specialty waxes.

I work in the Woods in North Carolina, we have these throne vines and BlackBerry bushes that I have to push through often so I do what’s called Tinning my Canvas Trousers and Jackets. I dip them in Mineral Spirits and Tung Oil Finish (sometimes Linseed Oils) and then once that dries I wax them with Otter Wax or Paraffin Wax, I add a couple of extra layers of canvas in the crotch so I don’t leave the boys on a vine and I walk right through most of what the woods have to offer. When I have to cleanup rusty Barbed Wire or Razor Wire I use Canvas Trousers and Jacket has been sprayed with Bed Liner on the forearms, Upper Arms, right side of the jacket, same for the trousers, other wise I just get shredded.I was attacked by Dogs and they couldn’t bite through the Bed Liner. I’ve been up working on the farm 90 hours and I have no idea why I told you this, but it’s good information I hope someone can use.
Are you worried about the tung oil and mineral spirits against your body? I used tung oil and boiled linseed oil on my axe handles
What ratio are you using for mineral spirits rung or linseed oils? (Boiled or unvoiced Linseed?)
I waxed a cheap Chinese canvas camera bag and a cheap army Navy surplus jacket. I didn't know much better at the time and went straight 🐝 wax. In retrospect you can make your own wax with 2:1 ratio of coconut oil and bees wax. Little trick, heat up the jacket (throw it in the dryer or use a hair dryer) apply the wax as a solid, hang it up and than it it with the heat gun again. Excess wax will bead up and begin to run down the fabric till it reaches the colder parts where it will gather. This avoids it soaking through to the layer below. I'm looking to pick up a cheap jacket to wax (probably a Dickies jacket) since Carhartt isn't available in the country I'm currently living in and the weather here would make a waxed jacket ideal.
If you take any cotton piece and apply the Barbour wax, it really works, and it is so easy to apply, and looks waxy cool. I tried it with a baseball style hat and big success. Worth the extra price for the expensive Barbour wax.

Greetings from Canada: waxed jackets work fairly well for when you get caught in a late spring snow or early snow in the fall. They shed snow before it can melt and soak your jacket. So as you said for the odd times that you get caught without your raingear..... same thing with snow! Just an observation from the north! Thank you for the great video.
Hi. I just want to share my experience please. I made my own wax (it is so much cheaper than buying ready made wax). I used 1 part bees wax, 1 part parafin wax, 1 part boiled linseed oil and 1 part gum tree turpentine (smells really nice!). It makes a pasty wax (no need to remelt) which is really easy to apply with a cloth or brush. I then used a hair drier to 'melt' the wax into the cloth. It is really easy to do. I have just waxed my Belstaff jacket and start to finish took about an hour. It has come really well and looks almost new.

Carl, you can avoid over saturation by painting the wax on while the jacket is hanging.

Thanks very much Carl. Love waxed canvas/cotton/etc also. Learning here also. Have tried combinations of bees wax, oils, other things but only on small things. A shave kit for instance turned out really good. Still learning. Good video.
I saw the first video and decided to wax a black military style jacket. Used the other wax bar. It came out OK but doesn't have the Barbour look I wanted. I waxed then heat gunned it. Then put in paper bag and into dryer. Then coated with wax again. Then heat gunned again. Looks better now. More wax buildup I think. 20 bucks for sax and 10 bucks at a resale shop is better than a new Barbour jacket. Thanks for the video.

Update. I have moved to office work and my waxed blazer/safari coat has been the focus of my coworkers calling me "Swagy Skembo". Its perfect for everyday running from the car to the building in a Texas rain storm.

I agree with you on the awesome patina and the look of a waxed jacket...I have several Filson jackets that are 20+ years old. I love them, The patina just gets better and better with age. I think the jacket looks great; really interesting to see what it took to get the end result. While it was an interesting process, I agree with your conclusion and would go buy a dedicated wax jacket. I have a couple of them - my all time favourite is a Barbour Border that I was bought when I was 16 and nearly 30 years later I still regularly use it! Over the years it has been ‘borrowed’ by various family members for extended periods, but finally came back to me with a broken zip and in need of some TLC. It is my go to coat when the weather turns bad; fortunately I’m more interested in staying warm and dry than winning any style awards, but is serves it purpose very well and I hope it’ll last another 30 years! It may outlast me...
I would like to see you do a ground pad or waterproof seat. Waxed cotton on the back,maybe painters cloth with a flannel blanket front. Not just for bushcraft but great for two at an outdoor concert or Shakespeare under the stars or a small picnic. Rolled up and wrapped with a couple of leather straps and shoulder strap. Much less daunting than a jacket, but much more universal.

Thanks for your video. I wax usually my canvas jackets and pants with a simple technic . I warm up the clothes in a dryer , when they're warm I rub bees wax and put them back ti the dryer . Works very well ...

I just waxed a pair of Duluth Firehouse pants, some insulated Carhartt bibs and a jacket. I have put them out on the clothes line for about a week and they still smell strong from the tung oil or mineral spirits I used. The result was thick wax in some areas and thin in others. I put on the bibs and jacket for a ride on my motorcycle on a cool morning before the sun came up and I was totally protected from the wind. I will try the iron method to smooth out the thicker places on my garments but overall it is doing what I wanted, wind protection to extend my riding season. The Duluth pants are stiff and very uncomfortable but they were an old pair and I do not expect to be using them much waxed or not. Thanks for your content.

I know this video is old but I have to say thank you so much for doing this. I've been looking for a waxed jacket for business casual use but most don't have a clean fitting design. Trucker is to short and utility has to many pockets. Just found the orvis briar jacket that is made of bedford cord that I like and think I might just wax it.
I found your video on the last day of a two week social media hiatus, and before I went in my hiatus a friend on Facebook was lamenting that he couldn't find quality wax jackets for sailing. I'm glad you made a follow up.

I’ve had a Barbour Beaufort that’s getting close to 25 years old and to this day still one of my favorites. Plus, having bought it from Orvis it’s been re-proofed a number of times for free.
How do you go about getting them to rewax it? Is only be able to buy online from them

Heat gun definitely in my top 10 of tools I use.
Wax removal, if you get wax on your carpet or the inside of your jacket, lay 3 or 4 sheets of newspaper on it then press with a hot iron for a few seconds, magic it's gone ! I've done this on carpet when a large candle melted, worked great.
I waxed my carhartt coat using sno seal and I have been very happy with it.
It did take a long time, but after watching your video and a few others I had to do it. Sno seal is much cheaper then otter wax and I would say it was a worthwhile experience.
I watched your jacket waxing video (among others) before waxing my Pointer brown duck jacket. I ended up waxing it by just rubbing the bar on the jacket. I let it sit for a couple of weeks but it still felt tacky. I tried a hair drier which seemed to help but was pretty slow. I tried an iron but that seemed to just pull the wax back to the surface. I ended up putting it in the drier set on high heat for about 15 minutes. When it cooled it no longer felt tacky and the wax appeared to absorb into the fabric. All in all the job was easier than I expected it to be. I would do it again.
I waxed an old Dutch combat jacket from the 70's, it weighed a ton before the waxing, it now weighs 2 ton. Took 3 tins of Barbour dressing.

Hey Carl! I just watched a video from The Lone Woodsman called the ultimate guide to making tin pants. You may want to see what he was doing there. It's VERY informative and scientific on how to imbue wax into cloth.
I used to make my own t-shirts designs with crayon shavings or drawing on a t-shirt, putting wax paper on top, then ironing it. Put wax paper on the bottom too, to prevent bleed-through.

So I literally just got done waxing my denim jacket. It's a lighter shade of denim with some time fade on it. I rubbed the wax on and used a heat gun. Once coat only applied and it is outstanding. I did put it in the dryer after to get an even seeping of the wax. I'm thrilled and I'll do it again. I feel like the choice of material has a huge impact on what type of effect it is going to have. Next time I'll get a short harsh bristle brush and work it in. It would be a lot easier than rubbing the bar. This is my jacket for life. I also didn't experience any bleed through as you did.

Careful with putting waxed stuff in your dryer very often. The wax will leave a coating on things, especially lint trapped in the duct and stuff. That wax will burn as a fuel if it gets too hot.

I do think it looks seriously cool. I've never thought that I was going to find my self watching this kind of content... and here I am! How about a review on the ridiculously cheap Find boot's (yep, the Amazon's brand, they look kinda cool and nobody is doing any review about it.... Although that might be the why) keep up with the videos!
I have the old Dover coats. The long one from Australian Outback was a pain to rewax and took a can and a half to wax the coat. I think they went out of business. So I ended up buying the Kakadu Work Horse and the Iron Bark. Both are half coats one for work and the other going out. Hopefully I won't use as much wax on these. The coats will be used as just in case gear, if I get caught in the rain or high winds. What I recommend is a fleece vest to go under if it gets chilly and some Carmex. I love to be out in stormy weather and your lips get chapped. You can't beat Disneyland on a stormy day.
I do have dedicated gear for storm like my North Face and Tactical Shark Skin and fleece. The same as Carl, but nothing beats the look of wax though. It has that old time rustic feel to me and adds character to your look.
I’m about to do this to a couple of carhartt jackets. I work on a farm so it’ll keep the fabric protected and the material will last much longer.
I’m not buying a premixed wax though. A few people have had good luck with Tung oil, tung oil finish, mineral spirits and microcrystalline wax. I plan on melting that together and applying with a brush. I think the tung oil needs a very long time to cure though before you can wear it. One guy said 3 days. The other guy said 3-4 weeks!
Anyway. It looked like a very simple project and really cheap too. I think enough stuff to make 2 pounds of melted wax only cost $60.
I think there is an odor-free, (or low odor), version of mineral spirits. Wondering if that would help after curing?
I love the look of wax jackets, but i cant justify paying the price for one. Maybe a DIY Goodwill wax jacket would be the way go lol

Gillysaurxx I agree, they are stupid expensive. At the same time they are gonna last you until you die. Many brands like Driza-Bone, Barbour, and Filson are very nice and well built.

I’ve noticed the entire key is having the right fabric. For example my waxed jacket is made of canvas used in hot sails, so it’s made to work well with wax. I’ve tried it on other garments and failed miserably, but the coats I have that came waxed from the factory, have had zero issues in touch ups. Wax will wear off a garment, so you’ll have to reapply. However, if you buy a Barbour, you can send it directly to them to have it waxed professionally for $45-$50. If you consider that your paying $40 in wax yourself, plus the time/effort, and your not a professional, that’s a hell of a deal if you ask me. I don’t believe Filson has a tread service, which is why they include a Tim of their wax when you buy the coat.

Hey buddy I have a ton of Fjallraven jackets with the g-1000 fabric and I use Fjallraven wax, always do a light layer and if you ever want it off just wax the jacket in HOT water once you wash it 2-3x it should all wash out. Whenever I over apply the wax on my Fjallraven jackets I just wash it 1 or twice on hot and boom back to the way it was. So just a little FYI if you don’t like the way it looks or if you over apply

Watched a guy use Sno Seal for leather shoes on some heavy weight Carter's canvas overalls and it initally rubbed in pretty well. Interested to see how it would work on your Carhatt.
You have great weekend morning drinking my coffee content I appreciate that. If it’s a true work jacket function is first and only and for me work clothes are usually retired casual wear. Your coat looks fine but I agree the investment would be better spent toward a commercially available one but still awesome you made it.
I’ve got a cheap cotton field style jacket that is unlined that I have thought of waxing. I love my Filson but I’d hate to trash it wearing it to work. I still work for a railroad and the amount of dirt and grime on cars and engines would likely very quickly stain the lighter finish of my Northway tan jacket. I figure the cheap jacket might be good to use without having to sacrifice my favorite jacket. By the way the Filson Northway is an amazing jacket. It’s not tin cloth, it’s lighter 12oz material which is absolutely perfect for this time of year. It has the same beefy YKK double zipper I’ve seen on some Barbours I’ve tried on, though the Filson felt more rugged so I went with this. I happened to be looking at the Barbour Sapper at the time and found the insulation to be more than I needed and the waxed cotton wasn’t as thick as the Filson.
I got a filson short lined cruiser and ill love. But ive been thinking waxing my carhart too my stable jacket

Buy a brick of bee's wax, double boil in a crappy pot, paint on with a rubber brush, place the jacket into a cotton pillow case and put in dryer on hot for 20 minutes
I've waxed a few smaller items, a baseball cap I wear fishing and a canvas pack I use for day hikes but never have I taken on a project as big as a coat it must have been labor intensive for sure.
I used to have a jacket made from waxed thread it was really weird feeling but worked great for the rainy weather

I've had one particular waxed jacket for over 10 years. I reluctantly wax it near the end of each summer (probably doesn't need it, but...)
Makes it beautifully heavy, weather resistant & during cold months there is a wool liner to clip in.

double layer (cotton lining), which as I said, does have a clip in wool liner for winter.
It is made as a hunting jacket, but with all those features, I grabbed it for everyday winter use.
It is now just over 10 yrs old.
I bought a waxed jacket had a lot of Bean points and had a discount code so I got it a lot cheaper, but it isn’t lined which if had to do it again would opt for a flint& tinder with a wool or blanket liner. It would be more useable in NewEngland weather!I saw your video thanks because I was thinking the same about an older Carharrt but won’t be trying that!

Also the different wear characteristics. I recently found some 15 oz duck pants. In my opinion the 15 oz duck seems more durable than 14.5 oz denim. I wear my pants ranching, so wear per dollar is more important than looks.
I knew about the old filson " tin pants " but I'm not sure it dawned on me that there might also be jackets.
It's probably a good thing you made this effort and learned something from your mistakes. Even if you just go out and buy a new waxed jacket, that new jacket will have to be re-dressed down the road with a frequency equivalent to wear. A little "patina" may be okay but a lot of patina or blotchiness on a waxed jacket, duster, or tin pants means it's likely ineffectual at keeping you dry.
I think it turned out badass... Nice job! You coulda bought one but you made one instead and that's cool AF. Built not bought.
You need some Filson. They recommend you put their jacket in the dryer for a bit then wear it while it cools for fit

Go with a good DWR spray next time. It works well on canvas and works better too. Wax is old school which is cool for looks. That’s about it these days. Wax is also heavy on a jacket.
I've just bought a vintage barbour on ebay. I've not received it yet but can see from photos that it has all those white marks on it kind of in creases. Not sure if they're water marks or wax marks. I'm planning to put it against a hot radiator and hope I can brush them in as want to avoid having to rewax the whole thing if poss as it's a long coat

Thanks for follow up... I accidentally washed my brand new ones (it was also my first two waxed canvas shirts)...because I do that with new clothes...but Idk it would ruin it. Now I have to redo it :(

Problem is that Carhartt is not a close knit stitch. Don't get me wrong it's awesome. But not the best for wax. You need a real close knit canvas. Like the kind red cloud collective use.
What about old mill jackets?
2-18-23. Just waxed my jacket: 2pts parafin, 2 pts bees wax, 1 pt walnut oil. Melted all together on the wood stove, painted on with a brush. Used a propane torch to melt it in, went over the light spots again, used the torch to melt it in... perfecto! Spent $20 on product and used 25% of it. Gonna make some tin pants now too!
For your ambitious project I'd like to see you figure out an efficient way to wax a set of coveralls.
I rewaxed my Babour last year. I put on with a sponge. The Savannah heat made the wax soft enough but it took 2 epic movies to do. I will do it with paint brush next time. BTW how often should you rewax?

A little pro tip: when you take your waxed jacket off, and it’s wet, hang it up and allow it to air-dry. I have an Aussie oilskin that I love! Can’t beat it!

Please review the Rogue Territory tan supply jacket. It is a great waxed jacket that James Bond wears in the new movie releasing in April 2020.
Even if you buy yourself a new waxed cotton jacket it will need to be maintained by adding wax to it. They recommend doing it every year. It can cost around $150.00 per jacket, and another $20.00 for the hood, (including shipping) to have a Barbour jacket rewaxed at their factory. (Prices i looked up online in 2020. It may cost even more now, idk.)
It's a lot of hard work, and it my take an hour or two, but it's a huge savings to buy the wax and do it yourself. I rewax my 25 year old LL BEAN parka myself, every 2-3 years, and it looks great and sheds water like it's supposed to do.
Carl, I've been a big fan of the Bladerunner films for a long while now. I especially love K's "Shearling" jacket, I say "Shearling" in quotations because recently I read an article with Renée April (The costume designer for Bladerunner 2049).
In this interview Renée states that K''s jacket isn't actually leather, its Cotton that was waxed and then painted over!? Do you know how this would've been done? Might be a good video for you :)
I know It’s 4 years after the fact, but you can get an exact replica from Soul Revolver. I’ve got one and I absolutely love it.
Throw your jacket in a dryer before waxing to get it warm, then while the wax is fresh throw it in a dryer bag or pillow case and put in dryer again. It’ll evenly spread out the wax on the coat.
Always hate the type of rain that suddenly tips it down, soaks you, then stops as soon as you have a waterproof coat to hand 😂

I really want to know how that wax will look and work on a grey carhartt jacket? I’m a truck driver so I don’t need waterproof but the sprinkles we get would be nice to have one.
It will darken your jacket a shade or two, probably put it more into the charcoal territory than grey. You'll also get that texture and heft from the added wax which stiffens it up a bit, but I happen to like that. Let me know if you go for it!
How do you maintain waxed items. Do you have to rewax every now and again?
I've started easy on a cotton flat cap. 2 coats so far and still not waterproof. Not sure how many I'd need to do to really rainproof it
