Results at 15:25 - good series, a worthy winner. Just this week I opened a McKenna 10 and a Knob Creek, both excellent of course, I just prefer the McKenna but as you know (and state) each barrel is different.
I have three out of the four; never tried the JD. if I had to rate the other three, it would be HM #3, KC #2, RR #1. For me , the RR has the quintessential Wild Turkey flavor profile on steroids with the classic bourbon flavors of vanilla and oak accompanied by some barrell char, cinnamon, and a touch of cherry. But, the KC may be the best value bourbon on the planet at $50, especially if you can get a good store pick, and I would live happily ever after with that one as well. I was able to pick up 3 bottles of a 14 year store pick for $50/bottle. Terrific stuff. HM is no slouch, but not in the same class as these other two in my opinion. Will have to be on the lookout for the JD. Nice review.
For me, I would have chosen my store pick Knob Creek Single Barrel, then the McKenna, then JD Barrel Proof, with Russels at 4. I just love my McKenna. It was the first SB that inspired me to invest in others. I have one last dram in that store pick bottle, gassed and sealed for a special day, because like you said, 1/3 are great, the other 2 are just good.

@@johnnyjustice9988 a honey barrel is just a really good barrel in the group of barrels. Some barrels may be average but if you get a really good barrel, that's a honey barrel. I would pick it up, especially for the price
Great series Chris and I am glad to see Knob Creek Single Barrel the winner. KC is one of my fav bourbons. I would like to see an Old Forester series including whiskey row expressions, single barrel and barrel proof.
Maybe this is nit-picking, BUT why is Knob Creek listed TWICE on the right side of the graph (at 19:29 of the video)? Once against Henry McKenna in the 2nd round where it lost to McKenna, then above, where it is listed as the winner between Bakers and Blantons!?
Couldn’t agree more. Russell’s is pretty good, McKenna is just “ok” (but overrated and now overpriced). I need to try the JD...... BUT, I just got and tried my first bottle of KC SB Reserve (store pick for $45) and OMGGGG!!!!! This juice *DESTROYS* almost everything double it’s price and more (except for Stagg Jr, which I can’t find again 😢🤬)!!! Going back today to empty the shelf!!! Well done and Thank you!!!! 👍👍
I don't unnerstan using a "pick" in a side-by-side evaluation. It seems to me a "pick" has been selected as one of the Master's VERY best barrels. We, out here in the wilderness, are not going to ever see that type of quality by buying off the shelf. I think, in 3 - 4yrs., I have actually seen 1 "store pick". Please enlighten me.
@@SpicyRok7482 While they are a store pick, in reality the stores don't get to choose from all the barrells. I think they typically get sent samples from 3 or so barrells and choose from that. Also, Bourbinsane intentionally didn't use his best picks, in an effort to get something more representative of what most people will see.
Apologies for the late response. I just saw this. The thing about this blind series was they are all single barrel so it's a crap shoot every barrel anyway. For my barrel proof series I did my best to use non store picks. If I did use a store pick I tried to make it an "average" batch of possible
Loved this shoot-out series. I think the two most surprising whiskies were the Henry Mc because I had such high hopes and always find it average. The second was the JD SBBP. It was so good. So much better than the Old No. 7. I have a soft spot for Old Forester and I wanted it to do better.
No surprise on the McKenna the bottle I have open has a bitter finish. I was surprised Russels finished lower than Jack. I haven’t tried the Jack yet. Guess I’m gonna have to get some. It seems to do really well in blind tastings.
My favorite boubon so far has been Elijah craig small batch id have to try it again but I picked up apple in it . Need to try it again. I just started drinking bourbon

For me Knob Creek just has a complexity that most bourbons don't have. And it is also incredibly smooth for a high proof bourbon. It's so hard to imagine that it shares the same mash bill with Jim Beam. They just don't taste anything at all alike.
I respect the "blind" process, but there's no way I wouldn't immediately know what each one of those were at first sip, maybe even on the nose. 3 out of the 4 are staples in my cabinet and are tipped often. Either way, great series and would like to see ya do something similar with some top shelf Ryes.

Chris , firstly fantastic review. But to answer your question posed. Personally my thoughts are that the nose on a whiskey is mildly important. Whiskey is for drinking , not smelling. I appreciate a good nose dont get me wrong. But 90% of a good bourbon/whiskey is what happens in your mouth ( no pun intended 😉). But again great review.
There's a liquor store near me that sells R.R. SiB and they haven't sold more than two in the last year. They sold those two to me! They were all bottled at the same time and are likely from similar/the same barrel and I really liked the first bottle, so any time I want the same flavor and I have 60 dollars to spend, I head to that store and buy the same bottle. There are three left on the shelf currently and I'm a little worried that when those three bottles of R.R. SiB are gone, others will never be as good. I wish there was a barrel proof version of the same bottle, I'd never want anything else. People need to stop the Blanton's hype, I think that hype around certain bourbons is only because certain companies are able to pack in a lot of flavor into a low proof bottling and most people enjoy lower ABV bourbons because they enjoy the lack of spice/burn. Basically, the demand for lower proof bourbons is greater than that of higher proof, so it can be tough finding high proof bourbons that are highly regarded and accurately reviewed.
Have been hooked on Blanton’s and Bookers for some time, but will try the Russell’s and Knob creek. Have been scotch drinker all my life and started drinking bourbon neat, same as scotch, 3 years. Love both of them.

Thoroughly enjoyed this bracket-style bourbon showdown! One suggestion to help with your experience in nosing is to keep your mouth slightly opened while sniffing in - it allows you to get more flavors to come through. You might already be doing this, but it's hard to tell. Anyway...CHEERS! 🥃

I agree with the pick. Knob Creek continues to surprise in these contests, but I believe is taken for granted in the mind of the public because it is a 'big' name and seemingly short of cultist mystery. It's hard to be both a brand name and great. Russell's, in my experience, is usually dark and a 'standard' profile with no highlights. I've been disappointed 3X by McKenna and won't be trying it again. Someone at that plant needs to look at consistency of the product. It's hard to justify the awards it has garnered with my own (and others) experience with it, But as a general observation on THIS particular tasting session, you seem a shade underwhelmed in your descriptions of the entrants characteristics. Drinking the best of the best you should have been rolling on the floor in ecstasy.
Ya I cant disagree. Honestly if I was comparing any of these 4 to previous rounds I am sure I would have described them as far superior. It all depends on what you are tasting next to each other and in what order. All of these were very good whiskeys, but only a few really "blew me away" I was struggling internally to choose a winner!

When looking at your chart, how did Knob Creek beat out Blanton's? Knob Creek was beat out by Henry McKenna, it wasn't in the same bracket. Shouldn't the matchup be between Blanton's and Baker's 7?
Russell’s surprises me because not much nose but you take a sip & it’s a smorgasbord of flavors, whereas KC has the best nose I think and it’s a different type of sip.

@@Bourbinsane So in my tasting last night, KC was the clear winner, and JD was in 2nd. I see what you mean - Russells is one of my favorite go-to bourbons, but when I drank it right after KC, it just tasted (and smelled) mediocre. And, yes....JD is banana-y! :) I did a side by side of four JDs on Thursday (JDBP, JDSB, JD Heritage, and Gentleman Jack). I swear Gentleman Jack smells like Banana Pudding and marshmallows!
I knew it was going to be Knob Creek...you and Chad from It's Bourbon Night are huge fanboys of that one. You're not alone, though, it has a pretty huge following...I'm just not one of them. I wish I was, though, because it's priced right, easy to find, and you can even get store picks of it pretty easily as well. That said, I enjoyed watching your tournament unfold, you had a lot of great whiskeys...but Russell's still should have taken it....LOL.
Bourbinsane is right. Another way to think about it is that Tenn whiskey is to bourbon as bourbon is to whiskey. They are sub-categories of each other. Said a different way, all Tenn whiskey is bourbon but not all bourbon is Tenn whiskey.

I did these as tastings of 4 whiskeys at a time not just 2 head to head and that round McKenna and knob creek won, that's why they both advanced
I keep all 4 of these in my bar, mckenna 10 and knobb are my 2 favs. Not a huge fan of russells

If you can still get mckenna at 28-32 (which i can) its a great whiskey. Some places charge 50 and at that price it just doesnt stand up.

If you ever get a chance to try a JD Heritage Barrell, it is truly next level. I'm hoping they release a barrell proof version of that in the future.

I’m split on KC picks. I’ve had really good picks and I’ve had some bad ones. I have a 15 year one now that is probably the best I’ve had. Cheers bud.

I agree with the pick. Knob Creek continues to surprise in these contests, but I believe is taken for granted in the mind of the public because it is a 'big' name and seemingly short of cultist mystery. It's hard to be both a brand name and great. Russell's, in my experience, is usually dark and a 'standard' profile with no highlights. I've been disappointed 3X by McKenna and won't be trying it again. Someone at that plant needs to look at consistency of the product. It's hard to justify the awards it has garnered with my own (and others) experience with it,
But as a general observation on THIS particular tasting session, you seem a shade underwhelmed in your descriptions of the entrants characteristics. Drinking the best of the best you should have been rolling on the floor in ecstasy.
Ya I cant disagree. Honestly if I was comparing any of these 4 to previous rounds I am sure I would have described them as far superior. It all depends on what you are tasting next to each other and in what order. All of these were very good whiskeys, but only a few really "blew me away" I was struggling internally to choose a winner!

When looking at your chart, how did Knob Creek beat out Blanton's? Knob Creek was beat out by Henry McKenna, it wasn't in the same bracket. Shouldn't the matchup be between Blanton's and Baker's 7?

Russell’s surprises me because not much nose but you take a sip & it’s a smorgasbord of flavors, whereas KC has the best nose I think and it’s a different type of sip.

@@Bourbinsane So in my tasting last night, KC was the clear winner, and JD was in 2nd. I see what you mean - Russells is one of my favorite go-to bourbons, but when I drank it right after KC, it just tasted (and smelled) mediocre. And, yes....JD is banana-y! :) I did a side by side of four JDs on Thursday (JDBP, JDSB, JD Heritage, and Gentleman Jack). I swear Gentleman Jack smells like Banana Pudding and marshmallows!

I knew it was going to be Knob Creek...you and Chad from It's Bourbon Night are huge fanboys of that one. You're not alone, though, it has a pretty huge following...I'm just not one of them. I wish I was, though, because it's priced right, easy to find, and you can even get store picks of it pretty easily as well. That said, I enjoyed watching your tournament unfold, you had a lot of great whiskeys...but Russell's still should have taken it....LOL.

How a Tennessee whisky is to be considered a bourbon is beyond me. It is not a bourbon.
It is a Tennessee whiskey, but it meets all the legal requirements for bourbon. Either way it Is some delicious barrel proof goodness
Bourbinsane is right. Another way to think about it is that Tenn whiskey is to bourbon as bourbon is to whiskey. They are sub-categories of each other. Said a different way, all Tenn whiskey is bourbon but not all bourbon is Tenn whiskey.
