Climbing Tools: Clove Hitch On A Bight

The clove hitch tied on a bight is knot #1178 in the Ashley Book of Knots. (ABoK). It can be quickly tied and thrown over a post, although it is not recommended for mooring a boat because of its tendency to slip or bind.
When used in climbing tied to a carabiner the clove hitch should be part of a closed loop climbing system or tied far from the ropes end. It unsafe as a termination knot. Its tendency to slip in that instance could lead to catastrophic failure. Backed up by a strangled double overhand knot according to the professional association of climbing instructors should mitigate the slippage . A nice feature is that you can adjust rope length without untying the knot or unclipping from the carabiner. This is convenient when adjusting rope length from an anchor. When used in a crabiner the load strand or direction of pull should be next to the spine of the carabiner for optimum performance.
Is sometimes used by arborists and tree workers to tie into the saddle in a closed climbing system. This allows the easy adjustment of the bridge between the saddle and the friction hitch.
