She made you feel like family it seems... Watching this clip it makes you feel like Mahalia never 'met a stranger'. Everyone was addressed as baby, darling, honey...whether she trusted you fully or not she seemed to just have a genuine compassion for people in general. We have lost this in our societies today.
Genuine Compassion only comes from JESUS Only - JESUS Living HIS Life thru her or you or me if we surrender and Constantly Commune with HIM in The HolySpirit like she did.
A true woman a witness n missionary servant of Christ she not sang but she served the the community helping with feeding the hungry clothing the people helping needy families black white it didn’t matter she had love for people rest on Mother Mahalia receive ur crown of life TBTG ✝️

This is wonderful with two very exceptional talents of Mahalia Jackson and Bobby Darin….. Two people with talent who know how to communicate with their fans….. I remember this footage going to air and still get a huge kick out of watching it all these years later….. Bobby Darin was always my hero and still remains today….. REST IN PEACE BOBBY DARIN…… YOU ARE DEEPLY MISSED.
I don't think it was anything wrong with the recording, it's most likely that microphone could not handle the strength, decibel point of Ms. Mahalia's vocal range. You know she could easily sing without a microphone and still be heard as clear as a bell.
iamanoblewoman1 I read that she was often dissatisfied with sound engineers’ handling of her voice. One book quoted her saying some made her sound like “a pig squealing under a fence...” This being because she figured they couldn’t handle the depth and power of her natural contralto voice.
This song was sung in the late seventies going into the conservative eighties and into our present time....What happened? THIS SONG IS INDEED NEEDED TO BRING BACK TO THE PUBLIC CONSCIENCE AGAIN!!!!!! I LOVE Mahalia and don't let the child likeness fool you: Mahalia was shrewd and she knew how to get what she wanted....
This is nice footage. I have it on DVD. However, something is wrong with it. Mahalia's voice sounds so raspy. I believe that is a defect in the footage. The same thing when she did "Just a Closer Walk." Her speaking voice along with everyone else's sounds normal. Just her singing sounds weird.
Gerard Vandervegt Hi! Here is the link to where I found the DVD. www.dannysrecords.com/bobby-darin/mike-douglas-show-bobby-darin-mahalia-jackson-dvd/prod_106.html It was just a plain DVD that said The Mike Douglas show.
She would use the tissues to wipe the saliva from her mouth, Check out one of Concerts / you’ll see her do that threw the concert, I think it started to happen as her Illness progressed, But she didn’t let it stop her🤗 God Rest Her Angelic Soul, May Her Slumber Be Ever So Peaceful 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾❤️❤️❤️
There are some people who after speaking or singing for extended periods of time accumulate saliva in the corners of the mouth/lips. Perhaps Ms. Jackson was conscience of it and would wipe her mouth 👄...just in case.
In these old videos, white singers performing in duo with Mahalia often seem awkward and uncomfortable. One gets the impression she was paired with "regular" (white) entertainers in an effort to restrain her vibrant, sometimes frenzied approach to her music. It wasn't racist, per se, but it did demonstrate a paternalistic attitude on the part of show producers in the 50s and 60s. But Mahalia was such a force of nature, and her style was so unique and inimitable that even seasoned professional entertainers failed to keep up with her --- sometimes to comic effect (see her cringe-worthy appearance on Arthur Godfrey's show).
Beautiful lady , beautiful voice, beautiful soul,,, God's anointed,,,
She could sing Party cake, Party cake, bakers man, and have you up singing as hard as you can. I love the fire in her soul!
Gotta love Mahalia Jackson! She didn't care witch way that hair went, when she started singing. Lol
Not sure she cared which way her hair (it's a wig yes?) went before she started either lol
Derrick Phelps It was same way when she sang for Louis Armstrong. Her hair fell all out of place, but she sang.
That's so true you gotta love her.
Every time she sing she was able to sit herself down when singing on the stage and let GOD use her
Mahalia looked like she was about to go in towards the end. Lol

yes, it does seem like a faint and distant memory.. . Oh how I wish it were back.
I agree 100%
She would invite homeless people to her home and cook for them... Herself!!

I love to see her get happy that hair has it's own way
I LOVE this❗ Plus, Mike and Bobby knew to follow the Queen and you can see how much they respected her too. 🦋💜🦋✨🤗✨🦋💜🦋
mahalia did that!!! she was feeling it towards the end almost lost her wigg
I believe this is from 7/31/70. Sadly Mahalia would be gone 18 months later in Jan 72 and Bobby in Dec 73.
Both entertained - until they couldn't anymore.
Thank you for the approximate date. I wish more people post the dates on archival videos.

She took that to church. No one like her. Not even close.

I feel sorry for mike and Bobby cause they just got blown off the stage and envious cause they got to sing with Mahalia.

mahaliafan67500 Hi, just a quick question. Which DVD is this segment on? Was it the "Mike Douglas show: moments and memories" DVD? Thanks!

Gerard Vandervegt Yes, it's not an official release.
Well, I'm just happy to have it. Do you of any other DVDs with Mahalia footage that's not on the retail market? I ordered this one already :)
She meant that song. 😁😁😁 Did she put her teeth in before she started singing?
At 3.08 does she put a tissue in her mouth?
Dunsapie I was wondering the same?
Looks like it was some mint or some gum, she put in the tissue before she started singing, I do that too

I have never heard her speak😳

She could have earned millions but she chose to don’t leave church.
I don't know why anyone tried to she with her she always blow them out of the water
