@@TangarisuThey meant that his artstyle hasn't changed much overall and it feels like a remastered version of the earlier days of his sonic animations.
Agreed with Roger on the wedding subplot. At first it seemed terrible, dragged on, seemed to miss the flow, - then the twist made it into a fun and energetic portion of the film all on its own. That's good filmmaking, balancing likely contractually obligated actor facetime with extra ways to make the scene useful for both the plot and the comedy setting.
So glad that after a year of waiting it's finally done. Great editing & Animation work from Euan as well. The Pre-quill comic I got left out the Sonic & Agent Stone stories and it was packaged with 4k versions of the movie. I had to go to HMV twice as the copy I got didn't have it and doing it during a massive heatwave didn't help. Looking forward to seeing what the Knuckles miniseries and Sonic the Movie 3 would be like.
8:14 Funnily enough, AoStH actually used more elements from the games than SatAM. Though they sometimes went in their own directions with it as was the case with the chaos emeralds. Come to think of it, I wonder if Ian Flynn will try to find a way to square peg, round hole AoStH into the canon now that the emeralds again have individual powers? LOL
Better Late than Never as we say… Congrats on having that big Dissected out!!! Sonic 2 is DEFINITELY better than the first and I personally preferred it compared to Mario ( Not that the Mario Movie was « Bad » but being made by Illumination and all, it felt way more « Just for Kids » while Sonic 2 was way more « For the HOLE Family ») Also I love that ending bit there with Luke and Sala’s reaction to the Post Credit scene, animated by Euan ; was really cute ☺️
Sonic 2 and The Super Mario Bros Movie felt like the reverse of the trailers for Sonic Superstars and Mario Bros Wonder. Sonic 2 and Mario Bros Wonder took more risks while Sonic Superstars seems to continue the Mania route of mostly playing it safe with 2D Sonic and Super Mario Bros Movie takes Illumination's signature playing it safe style of movie making since after the success of Despicable Me.
@@mattwo7 I like that Mario movie played it safe compared to the games because the standard in video games adapted into movies is NOT playing safe, so there was a novelty in seeing a movie THAT faithful to the games. I enjoyed it for that. It's issues were pacing and lack of any plot twists, it was just rollercoaster ride through familiar set pieces, but playing it faithful to the games was a huge plus that I wanted to see more in video game adaptations.
I've been waiting for this. Also random detail, but I find it funny that at 44:59 Elise is the only one smiling like, "I thought that was a nice pun! Good one!🙂" How sweet of her... unless it's a fake smile and she actually hated it too on the inside.
3:07 Turns out playing it safe paid off for Nintendo and Illumination but unless hell freezes over, the moon turns blue and the planets align at the exact same time and it thus wins an Oscar outside of the animation category (which exists solely so Disney could get Oscars), the "animation doesn't count as movie" curse is still alive and well.
Let's be real, even if the Mario movie broke every box office record ever conceived there's no way that thing was ever getting an Oscar outside of a strictly technical category. It's like exactly the kind of corporate product movie the Oscars exist to snub
47:37 I thought Stone was portrayed as too much of a doormat/sycophant to be an intimidating villan & the romantic undertones didn't suit the property or relationship at all. The whole competent & loyal lackey was done much better in Fleetway with Grimer.
Dude. Stone was literally my favorite part of the whole movie. The fact that he ran the Mean Bean and made cappuccinos with Dr R's face instantly added so much character that was kinda missing in the first film. His seamless transition from deadpan assistant to worshipful sycophant had me dying. I guess they could have worked harder to make him cooler or more broadly appealing but to me the worst part about Dr Robotnik potentially not returning is the fact that we won't get any more antics from Stone
Other "alien buddy" archetype movies I can easily recall: Star Kid, Terminator 2, A Troll in Central Park, Ted, Alf, Little Shop of Horrors (in a roundabout way)
11:52 Well most superheroes have at least one dead parent, a supervillain parent and/or a deadbeat parent. Sonic's been adopted _twice,_ which is actually a lot more than what most superheroes have in terms of parent tragedy.
I had one idea that he was powered by Sonic & Shadow's Quills then he becomes self-aware, usurps Robotnik and wants to wipe out humanity, so Sonic & Shadow team up to defeat him.
@@Lukethefox Yeah I figure an idea on getting Shadow to team up with the others was to take on Metal Sonic, it wouldn't be the first time Shadow teamed up with someone to fight Metal
15:12 More like that _was_ Sega. I mean I'm sure Yakuza is still a great series (including that one Fist of the North Star game) at least. Sega seems more interested in outsourcing the kinds of games that used to define them than making them themselves these days with remakes and/or sequels of Monster Boy, Alex Kidd, Panzer Dragoon, Space Channel 5, Streets of Rage and House of the Dead being licensed out and them losing the rights to Toejam and Earl for the first game to get a remake as well.
44:42 I honestly think there's actually a bit of a hint that Sonic and Silver both have natural chaos powers like Shadow (which Silver manifests through his telekinesis) as the reason why is it that no other character except Mecha Sonic MK II has a super form like theirs (though it is odd that thing had a super form like theirs to begin with? Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Mighty and Ray just got paler color pallets. People expected Super Amy to be yellow because she was a hedgehog but she was a lighter shade of pink instead. Why? Because she lacks the powers the other three have.
I have this headcanon that characters are "inclined" to chaos energy in the Sonic universe. Other than Shadow, they don't have "chaos powers", but they can more easily use the emeralds. It's not common, which is why Shadow is shocked Silver can use Chaos Control in 06. I don't think Sonic and Silver have outright "chaos powers" becauae pretty much any attack that directly uses chaos energy always has "Chaos" as a prefix. So it's pretty much what you said except I think of it a little differently.
@@BlueKeyAnimations Arrow of Light, Atomic Spin, Deflect, Overload, S. Teleport, Shadow Dash, Shadow Heal, Shield of Light, Spear of Light, Super Sonic Boost, Super Sonic Missile, Super Sonic (Dark Brotherhood attack) and Turbo Boost all do not have "Chaos" in the name. Ermel/Phi and Knuckles (with the all-star powerup, which lets him use the Master Emerald's power) both have unnamed attacks too but they're based on Chaos (Air) Burst and Chaos Blast respectively.
38:38 Those have more iconography to to them while the game GUN logo is too simplistic by contrast. No eagle, no badge, no flag(s), no text, no founding date, no gun.

2:53 Yea, it's super annoying how people only think about Hollywood whenever the topic of video game movies comes up when there's a metric butt-ton of anime movies based on video games that are far better than most of the old Hollywood attempts. I mean maybe not The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach, it's a closer adaptation in some regards while still being kind of loose because there wasn't much Mario lore at the time but can one really call it a better movie than the old Hollywood Mario Movie by its own merits?
nice review, I don’t mind sonic not being like his game counterpart, but I would mind him getting more cockiness, I don’t want him to be a total jerk, also knuckles was amazing in this flim, also the cgi is next level, with the mario movie, I didn’t love it but I liked it, man I remember I tried to criticize the mario movie, and I got death threats for it back then, how like the mario movie feels really bland, and just felt like the video game references the movie

yea, i agree. Live action sucks! 2D forever. I have yet to see this film. Looks better than the first but the celebrities always seem to ruin it for me.

33:28 It does not. Our _American football_ fans are closer with the nutso costumes no sane person would ever wear (as well as plenty of tamer ones) but still not nearly as bad.
So other than Knuckles smashing the hologram projector everything you all liked about the movie is something most of the franchise outside of the games always does anyways, like in all of the comics and shows, and never has anything to do with something original the movie brings to the series. If that wasn't the case I'd have thought I missed out on something by passing on this movie. Instead it's just a lazy Sonic 3 retread for the trillionth time but only looks good because it's an energy-filled action movie at a time where the series needs it, as if it had any choice whatsoever to not be like that. Tails and Knuckles being written well is usually the case, it's just the games that make it seem rare, it's like these are legitimate compliments but it's such faint praise because I take all of this for granted from Archie, STC, etc.
