my grandfather built a ladder just like this for outside barn loft access. The only difference is he used nails. That ladder is 100 years old and still strong. I will add that about 30 years ago, we put concrete pavers underneath each leg.
Just put up an elevated blind. 10’. How long will the ladder need to be ? Not wanting the ladder to be vertical. I was thinking a 12’ ladder would work. Your thoughts?
It’s been a while but I believe I did a 12ft ladder. I also put the base on 2 cinder blocks to keep it off the ground to help against rot and also give it an incline so it’s not straight up. I have the finished blind on my channel that shows the ladder. Check it out and see what you think.
As long as you can get the lumber that long. Or you could piece 2 sections together, but I would use carriage bolts to hold them together and glue so it won’t separate.
Personally, ... I would have only inletted 3/4" instead of 1-1/2" and allowed the wrungs to stand 3/4" proud; then beveled the ends of each. 1-1/2" x 2' isn't enough ! Basically you're utilizing two 2x2's .... ..... 2x6' would have been better !
By cutting you lost the strength of your 4x4 and that was way too much work. Just mount the boards on the outside and screw boards in between the steps if you are worried about one giving out. What you did looks nice though...just considerable work.
They need to be strong enough where the snow & high wind destroys everything. I’m using one like this & it’s been out for over 10 years. All we have to do is, check screws n tighten them before usage. Our lives are dependant on it when climbing in darkness
