  • Veliko Tarnovo was built on three hills: Tsaravets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora, and is crossed by the river Yantra. It was declared the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire in 1185, after two aristocratic brothers, Ivan Assen and Theodor-Peter, waged a two-year battle against the Byzantine Empire. At that time, the city was known as Turnovgrad. Under the Assen dynasty, Turnovgrad developed rapidly and all the fortresses and over 30 monasteries appeared in turn. Like the rest of the Balkans, Turnovgrad came into the hands of the Ottoman Empire in 1393, where it remained for almost 500 years. Bulgaria was liberated in 1877, and Veliko became the capital of the new independent state. Only two years later, the capital was moved to Sofia. Turnovgrad was named Veliko Tarnovo in 1966.
The special charm, the status of the former capital, the streets with cubic stone and the breathtaking views are just some of the reasons why Veliko is considered the most beautiful city in Bulgaria.
