    What is the HACK MUSIC THEORY show?
    Hello, we're Kate Harmony and Ray Harmony, and together we are Revolution Harmony. If you’re new to our channel, welcome, and please allow us to introduce ourselves. We're music producers based in beautiful Vancouver, Canada, and we’re also the founders of Hack Music Theory, the pioneering notation-free method for making great music. Every Monday, you’ll find us here on TH-cam sharing our top secret music theory hacks, which are designed to transform you into a super confident music maker whose songs will stand out on those Spotify playlists. So, whether you’re a beginner or a professional, a songwriter or a producer, an instrumentalist or a DAW musician, our music theory hacks will have you writing great songs in no time!
    Who is RAY HARMONY?
    Ray is an award-winning music lecturer and the author of the critically-acclaimed book series, Hack Music Theory. After decades of teaching ‘popular’ and ‘classical’ music theory, Ray created a unique crossover method for songwriting, which we call Hack Music Theory. We use this method to write all our music. Ray’s songs have even featured Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), Kool Keith, and many more.

    You are everything I ever wanted in a music teacher. Not just copying songs and learning to "play" but the theory and how music works... Why do you play note "x" not just "because" there is a reason... Like the perfect 4th and 5th, which I never knew.

      Wow James, thanks for watching and for your very kind words! We're happy to be of service and are super pumped to welcome you into our Hack Music Theory revolution! What kind of music do you make?

      DUDE! James Peterson I felt the same way, lately I only watch the video if the person can deliver the concept and the meta of the concept. That wheres the true knoweldge will come from, always the why not the how.. The grasping of a concept and applying it in new ways is real learning, and this gem provides the substrate for that learning to flourish.

    Love the energy when you replay after each hack. My favorite part about this is watching you play it live on the 5 string afterwards. You created something so unique and catchy that a beginner/intermediate bass player could ACTUALLY play, with some practice, instead of some unrealistic bassline that would appear on a davie504 video. It keeps newbs like myself motivated.

      @@HackMusicTheory Honestly I don't. I decided to pick up a 5 string bass as a side hobby for fun and "why not". Now just cruising the web so I can learn to play and hopefully not acquire too many bad habits. I'm not a creative/artistic person but I love seeing things be created while also learning theory at the same time.

      @HackMusicTheory  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool, Skippy Peanutbutter! There's lots of people in our audience who don't make music but watch anyway, and we love them too :) But now you know where to come if you ever decide to start making music! However, since you are learning theory, if you haven't already, may I suggest that you check out our free music theory book, '12 Music Theory Hacks to Learn Scales and Chords'? It's a refresher of the basics and it's a super fast and fun read. You can download from our website: HackMusicTheory.com/Books. You are a fantastic teacher brother! I played some bass in high school because I loved Primus and funk, but never took it seriously. Now I engineer/produce dance music predominantly and DnB more than anything else and although I do do this already (if there one thing I'm good at it's making basslines) I didn't know I was and it wasn't all the time. Now u just helped a nother piece of the puzzle snap to place. LIked and followed, you sit among very few. And some have last names like Huart and Pensado. Your concise approach and breakdown of why was clear and explained with excellent examples, if this was reddit, and thank God it isnt, lolol, Id give you gold sir! Cheers

    I have a quick question so D dorian is like the key of C no sharps or flats and starting the tonic on the ii. What if I have a progression thats in the key of A major but the tonic is D

    • @HackMusicTheory
      @HackMusicTheory  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The key of A major has three sharps, so if you're in a mode that has three sharps and the root is D, then you're in D Lydian. If you wanna check out all our mode hacks so you can understand the modes (and a bunch of other theory too), then you can download our Songwriting & Producing PDF here: RevolutionHarmony.com/Books. Hope this helps, and thanks for stopping by :)

    Very nice tutorials. I have just bought some of your books. But I got confused here on the backbeats!. Why D and F are the the 2nd and the 4th notes (Backbeats) in Dorian mode? Isn't E and G?

    • @HackMusicTheory
      @HackMusicTheory  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aww thanks so much Waleed, and a warm welcome to the Hack Music Theory community! What kind of music do you make?
      As for your question, you are correct, in D Dorian, E is the 2 and G is the 4, and those numbers refer to the scale's spelling. We also use numbers to refer to beats. So in 4/4 you have beat 1, beat 2, beat 3 and beat 4. Beat 2 and beat 4 are called backbeats. Hope that helps clear up the confusion, Waleed! Take care, and we hope to see you again soon for more theory hacks :)

    What software are you using? It looks so simple!

    • @HackMusicTheory
      @HackMusicTheory  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jake, thanks so much for watching and connecting! We use Reaper and are big fans of the software and the company for so many reasons! They give you a free 60-day trial of the full program and it's relatively inexpensive to buy at US$60. You can check it out here: www.reaper.fm. Take care and we hope to hear from you again. Happy Songwriting! Kate :)

      Hack Music Theory Thank /you/! I watched this and one of your videos and made everything easier visualise. Without the software I quickly wrote the layout on a piece if paper and went from there. Writing was already easier, messier, but easier. And thank you for the link.

      Jeffrey Brown
      I've found some tutorial and there was not that screen from HackMusicTheory video
      I'm not saying that ReaperDAW is not the right program, but I wonder if the program that I already have (Sequel by Steinberg) has similar option (I'm not a fluent user at all :/)
      do You know if Sequel can do it?
      I mean to compose the melody like it is builded of bricks...
      pls help!
      ok,ok,ok I got it!
      I got it, I got it, I got it!!! :)))))))))
      it was frustrating to looking for something inside of enviroment that you are jot familiar with, but I made it!!! :)
      I'm more than happy, because when I shown it to my kids, they jumped immediately at the front of the laptop to compose some melody
      yeeeaaaaaahhhh! (that was the purpose)

      Revolution Harmony
      As I wrote (by editing previous question) I have found similar options in the program I own.
      it would be not reasonable to buy another if I haven't dig the one I already have ;)
