    Tops said the differential heat treat is why they don’t do 90 degree spines. They harden the edge, but not the spine so the knife will bend with abuse as opposed to break. The down side is that the softer spine will roll over, so isn’t good for scraping/sparking (according to tops). Just goes to show that you can’t have everything. Just for safety, I’ll take the bend-not-break over a stiff spine

    I think this is my favorite of all your videos. i like it when you bring your friends/other youtubers along. Gives it all a bit more perspective and creates a more natural situation with 3 friends discussing a knife instead of a tabletop or backyard review.

    As for the 90 degree spine issue, so many firesteels come with strikers attached now that I'm likely to have that with me. Besides, you can always use your blade edge up close to the handle to get a spark. Not optimal, but you could do that in a pinch.

    This is absolutely my favorite knife. It is as close to perfect for as you can get. In a few other of your vids you say the handle isn't the greatest. Well to me its perfection. Everyone has different preferences. The only way to improve this knife for me is to maybe make a s35vn model. Good edge retention bit very easy to sharpen. Joe Flowers knocked this one out of the park with tops building an incredible specimen.

    Great video and great review, Chris! I'm considering obtaining one. As far as 1095 goes, I live in the Houston area with major humidity and salt air. I've never had a problem with rust on a high carbon steel knife. All of my knives and guns get a regular inspection and oiling, even when I lived in dry climate areas. Not an issue.

    that is a high scandi grind....looks more lie a hybrid saber scandi grind....I like that grind.probably 18 degree bevels where a scandi is from 22 to 30 degree bevels...the handle is one of the most important thing on a knife..being a maker i spend more time trying to get a perfect handle to blade profile..lots of drawing an testing templets

    Thanks for the review, it verified my concerns with this knife. I love the TOPS scandi grind even on my little MSK. If I have the modify the spine, find someone to make replacement handle scales and figure out a way to get a proper dangler sheath I'll pass. I'll just stick with my Mora Bushcraft Black and my C2G Fab dangler sheath at around half the price for the Brakimo.

    this looks like a great knife, i like it alot. but wasn't good to hear that the handle is a little flat. a great handle is a huge must, and completely unacceptable in any decent knife. ya, the blade and steel are the most important, but useless if the handle isn't comfortable.

    I like the knife and I think if you do a paranord wrap on it with a lanyard loop at the end it mite be more comfortable in the hand, also if you lightly grind the spine on the back of the blade to flaten it for ferro rods it would be better for strikeing a spark for fires

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Robert Miller A) I hate paracord wraps. B) I've tried that before. TOPS Knives have softer spines. I don't want to grind it up and get the same result as when I tried it in the BOB.

  • @SozoLeeJames
    @SozoLeeJames 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The knife is a good start 1095 is good steel and is used because it is cheap to mass produce, just where I'm at it's not practical because I have to continue to oil the hell out of it all the time so it doesn't rust. I like the design of the knife blade, handle is nice except that for a survival knife I prefer the full tang with extending metal out of the bottom end for pounding if need be! Thanks for the review!

    Like the knive but I have run into several of products with the Micarta handle and I am not sure I understand the appeal. My Brakimo, arrived 2 days ago, came with a metal belt/pant clip like many gun holsters. Also came with a pretty good survival whistle.
    Not sure how to PM. What are your feelings on a good machette? I purchased several cheap machetes and gave up and purchased a Condor. One problem I can see right from the start is the Brakimo is heavy and the Condor is heavy and the two weigh more that my trimmed down day hike bag. Do you feel a machette is worth carrying?

    Joe Flowers often appears to be an engaging and animated guy... he presents a respectful relationship to the resourceful indigenous people that provide for his Bushcraft Global trip experience. I feel that based on his needs (and participants success) in the jungles... he desired an extended, sharp-tipped point much like Ray Mears has for particular needs. The grind 'just by looking at it' suggests would also lend itself to scandi-vexing bevel as a forgiving field-tuning solution... both sharp and sturdy. The handle is no question the downer. The hole (I believe) was for clipping to a pack with a carabiner, likely some funky style yo look different, plus some whatever the effect be on balance to retention schemes (in hand or custom sheath). The handle shape and size is somewhat too 'tactical' for a Bushcrafter. Good video guys. I have to say: One spec. so to speak (I think the part you guys left out or forgot) an I'll define it more or less... is that the Brakimo ('translation - 'greetings') is mainly a camp craft knife, with survival knife heft, and having a tactical handle. Thumbs up guys!

    Damnit, it's like TOPS have never heard of stainless steel. I'd never say that 1095 isn't a great knife steel but where I live anything that isn't stainless rusts just for fun as soon as I walk out the front door. TOPS, please, for the love of God, give us some S30V!!

    • @tahnjr
      @tahnjr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Cen Blackwell : I wholeheartedly agree. "Survival" knives should be minimal care.

    • @DarkFire515
      @DarkFire515 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hmm actually you make a good point. We've no need for technological progress after all, right? *sigh*
      Have you actually used non-stainless steel tools in a marine environment? Ever wondered why *every* dive tool (for example) is either stainless or not made of steel? Because they rust very quickly no matter how often you wipe them with oil. Using preservative coatings or something like frog lube on a knife that'll be used in the woods most weekends is completely fine. Trying to use those corrosion preventative measures for tools that are used daily in a marine or shoreline environment is doomed to fail.

    • @DarkFire515
      @DarkFire515 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not a straw man argument at all. The entire point of technological advancement is convenience and the ability to do things that were impossible with older technology. Of course naval cutlasses, properly maintained, could be kept in working order, but the salient point is this: why use a carbon steel tool that you have to obsessively clean and lubricate when you can use a tool made of a different material that lowers necessary maintenance for a given environment? Deliberately choosing the more labour intensive option is illogical, particularly in this case when the older option offers little or no additional function or capability.
      To answer your question: in what possible way would it be logical to deliberately choose the carbon steel weapon when a stainless one is maintenance-free, therefore freeing a sailor's time to spend elsewhere on board ship?
      I can completely see the point in wanting experience with less advanced tools as a matter of skill development, or for historical enjoyment, for example hunting with muzzle loading muskets or bows and arrows, but to deliberately choose a more maintenance intensive option for a survival tool is simply illogical.
      If you choose to use carbon steel survival kniives then more power to you, but to suggest that not doing so is a matter of laziness then it is you who have advanced the complete straw man argument. I'm done here, good day to you.

    Looks like a very sweet knife. Just a question: what is the purpose of the small semicircular notch at the start of the cutting edge by the handle? Could that be made larger to act as a shango notch?
    Would the Tops leather sheath work on that knife? It would help if you are wrapping the handle for bulk.

    Chiming in again, almost all Top's Knives, don't have a 90° spine because they don't do a heat treatment on the spine of the knife.
    FYI, speaking with TOP'S if you put 90° edge on the spine yourself it voids the warranty.

    I like the ratios & overall design of this knife. I would certainly nix the silly divots for a palm swell - the knife would actually be comfortable instead of able to create fire in the dumbest of ways (sorry, I'm jaded w crap like this). I like your dangler mod, I perform a similar mod on a lot of my leather sheaths that don't ride low enough...I of course would prefer this knife, & any knife ever made, come w a leather sheath over Kydex. On the topic of sharp spines....I'm surprised this is still a thing. I can see using spines for scrapping, for fine tender, but that's it. I don't carry knives I don't like, & I would never repeatedly strike ferro rods against a knife I like - to me, that's in the silliness category of the divots...I mean come on, just stop it. It is infinitely more important for a user to be able to push against a spine with his/her thumb again & again without fear of injury that it is to able to spark a ferro rod - not only do not have to have a sharp spine, IMO, you should just never have a sharp spine. I do love that this knife doesn't have the single worst feature that a knife can have - jimping. Love the blade shape & length, & the geometries seemed to work well in this testing....even a man with severely weak arms (Chris) is able to make super sweet feather sticks. Tops is getting closer & closer to making a knife that doesn't have any glaring weaknesses - great review!!

    I would just stick with the Terava Skrama and the Terava Jaakaripuukko, and call it a day!
    You can probably purchase "BOTH" of the aforementioned knives, with sheaths, at or near the same price of just one of the Tops Brakimo knives!

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Msilverhammer Can't argue with that logic. Hopefully my Skrama gets here soon. They didn't have them with the leather sheaths, but luckily a kydexer friend had one (of COURSE he needed need the stock sheath anymore), so I have the sheath now. Just waiting on the knife. Having the Skrama and Jess-X is like being married and getting a girlfriend. Jess won't be happy. Closest thing to a Jess-X type tool.

      Varusteleka of Finland is a great place to buy gear, and yes they sometimes are out of stock for awhile. but usually stock back up quickly.
      I recently met someone from Finland, and they told me that Varusteleka has a great reputation in Finland for being a reputable company.
      By the way, they also make a longer version of the Jaakaripuukko, and also in stainless, plus several other interesting traditional Finnish Puukko knives.
      I hope that Jess X does not catch you stepping out with the Skrama! LOL
      BTW...How the heck does a Michigan Wolverine (Ben), get into Ohio Sytate Buckeye territory? That's like oil and water!

    I find it very funny when you get frustrated with the noises. but I watch your channel for the info more than the comedy. thanks for all the great reviews and info.

    that has been on my wish list since I first saw it on a shot show video. looks like a great primary field blade. and I have really had good performance out of the 2 tops knives I own. ( BoB fieldcraft and Silent Hero)

      I had a chance to hold one of these in a local knife shop here recently, and I am very glad I did before I bought one. the handle is made for a medium to smaller hand. I wear XL leather gloves, and tend to need to stretch them out a bit to make them comfortable. the hook on the tail of the handle crushes my pinky finger, effectively making this a 3 finger knife. I loved the blade geometry, and was really disappointed in the fact that I just cant hold and use it with that hook.

    Great knife I'm putting that on my "To Get List". In addition to your introduction of another fine knife and captivating instructional video, you succeeded in making me hungry. There's nothing more fragrant than eggs, coffee and Johnsonsville brats cooking in the campsite air.

    Consider a comparison of the Brakima (since it still has sales/interest power) with adventure sworn knives. Is the Brakima a proper cheaper version of the same, etc.
