My Q3 arrives later today and I have been binge watching Q3 TH-cam video and reviews for the last two days. Adore your pictures, amigo. Thanks for the inspiration
I bought a Q1 1 year ago(review dropping in 2 weeks) for many of the reasons you picked up the Q3. The Q series is one of the best camera lines ever made in my opinion. I think for many you just pick your MP/AF needs(and the few gimmicks that come with any Q generation) and then you land at either a Q1/2/3 and enjoying every minute of it.
I got my Q3 few months ago and am loving it. I have to say. I have seen many reviews of the Q3 and the sample photos they post are spray and prey at best but your photos are stunning 🙏🏼
I completely agree with your points made in the beginning. Leica brings me that joy with their film m bodies, their old “obsolete” digital bodies and the incredible glass they produce. That’s why I choose Leica.
In my personal opinion, I love to have a Leica Q3. I am the type of person that doesn't want to lug around with a lot of photography equipment, and I already like the fixed setup lens on the Leica Q3. I mainly take photos from travel, nature and most of the time shooting in wide-angle. And I don't plan to pursue a career in photography, I just prefer to learn and just shoot. Btw, your shots here are all nice especially the wide-angle ones.
As someone else who has a Sony kit and bought a Leica Q3, I would never try to defend why I bought is as being lighter and better for hiking etc. I often hike with a Sony kit with multiple lenses up to about 10 or 12 miles, and those things are somewhat neglidgeable. I personally bought it because I love photography, and I wanted to try a Leica (knowing that if I didn't like it I could sell it and not really lose much money - especially with the backlog). For me it's the same reason I bought a Nikon FA film camera back in 2015, and why around that same time I tried a fixed 35mm rangefinder (didn't keep that one)... the more you try things; the more you learn, and the more you grow. What I have learned about it is that I actually quite like 28mm (I was always a 35mm guy), that it reminds me of shooting film but without the pain of processing film, and I am liking having a camera where the images require minimal processing. The longer I am a photographer, the more I realize I want some help from automatic features... but I don't want to feel disconnected from the images I take (which is where I think a lot of cameras are going these days).
I like my Q as an EDC but it IS limited despite a very croppable sensor, so I run it alongside a Fuji ILC which certainly offers more possibilities creatively.
I recently got the Q3. Been shooting it for nearly a week. Initial thoughts. Don’t really like the resolution of the EVF haven’t shot on the previous versions. Build quality. Is amazing. I replaced my Fuji X100f which after 6 years of daily use broke. The lens was coming loose and the auto focus stopped working. I probably could’ve gotten it repaired or a got a second hand V or VI but I thought I’d done my time with the X100 and it was time to see what the step up would be like. Images are leagues above the x100 but I think that also comes down the user
The Q series is stunning, I had the original for quite a few years and now regret selling it. As with the Q lens, I would never bother to inspect the focal length to compare with anything else, but with Leica’s Summilux range it actually means anything faster than f/2 and slower than f/1.4 not exclusively f/1.4, for example the 90mm Summilux is an f/1.5, the same with their Noctilux range, they aren’t exclusively f/0.95, rather anything faster than f/1.4. Just enjoy the Q and the stunning photographs it is capable of.
There is something special about using something so wonderfully built and exquisite with great IQ. I love my Q3. But the ability to hike, bike ride and walk around with it makes it even more special.
Finally! A great review where it’s not just about the brand. And your colors are amazing! On the lens, Leica could fix the 24/25 “issue” with some 28mm frame lines. Not ideal, but at least it gives something more true.
Incredible, couldn't agree more about the camera taking away all the friction. I find myself bringing my Q2 places I'd never haul my Sony gear. Inspiring photos as always!
Its nice to see you are enjoying the Q3. I have seen far too many used Q3 appear on the market from people who got sucked into the hype and really didnt research the camera enough. I have owned one since June last year and absolutely love the camera, may fav camera yet.
The ONLY major flaw to the Q2/Q3 (for me, it's subjective) is the lack of a proper shutter sound/haptics. I know it's because of the leaf shutter which has it's benefits .... but for me, there's just something about the missing sound/haptics that make it feel much less like "capturing" or "creating". I love the shutter on my Fuji XE4 (or Xpro3). It's like driving a Tesla, it's just too quiet. They will never do it, but man, what if we could at least import our own shutter sounds and get a bit of haptics ... just love the Q2/Q3 so much and sucks I always have to compromise something important (to me). That said .... the nearly silent leaf shutter is great for street ...
Nice to see someone who can actually compose photos. Some lovely shots here displaying the cameras capabilities. The 28mm being nearer to 24 or 25, though, did put me off rather. Thanks for the video,
Love the photos! I barely touch my Sony, just feels like a hot mess of options, so I feel you, for most people you just want to shoot not fiddle with millions of settings (depends on the subject of course).
Quality is a relative paradigm in image making: at MA level you would be perceived suspiciously as what is stressed is a minimum 70% meaning and 30% visual correctness when it comes tothe production of images. Cartier Bresson intersected the 2 at 50/50 but he was an educated artist and that completely reshaped the scenario. Thanks for the video :)
Just got home from a month in Italy, Turkey, and Greece. My new Q3 was the only piece of photo gear I took with me. Amazing camera. I think I am going to sell everything else. And by "everything else" I mean a s--t ton of gear.
I am just tempted to buy this due to AF. I can’t shoot quick enough anymore on the M11 due to age. But having to get over the stretched distorted image only to crop is my hurdle.
Hello Julien. I'm currently thinking about buying a Q3. This would not replace my Sony GM (24/35/50/85) system but would complement it. There are times, even on vacation, when I want to be more minimalist when traveling. I love the workmanship and design of the Q3 and I would take it with me much more often than my Sony system. My biggest worry is after a purchase, I think to myself that my 24 or 35 could be just as good or better and I end up regretting such a purchase. I think in the end the feeling/fascination and lifestyle wins and decides the purchase, but the feeling is very expensive. Of course I could also take the same picture with my 24 GM.
Complimenting that Sony kit is exactly what I’m doing. A lot of times I need a second body for a job or for whatever reason so that is another motivator. True that you can probably take the same picture, but there is something special, and lighter, about the Leica Q experience. That said, the A7RV and all other modern Sonys are amazing.
I’ve been using a Q2 for almost two years and really enjoy it. But the Q3 addresses the cons of it: faster focus, more resolution, and tilt screen. But I’ll have to wait and get a used Q3 because a whole kit with accessories and tax is over $7,000.
Having had a long commercial and editorial career, I have shot with literally everything from 35mm film through 4x5, plus various panoramic film cameras, and working with digital capture in the studio and on location since the late 90's. I am just getting started with the Q3, and really enjoying it. The Q3 reminds me of my favorite film camera, the Mamiya 7II, which created a 6x7 image on 120mm film. Both of these cameras have, as you say, very little friction between yourself and the world around you. Soon I will put this challenge on the line, as I am leaving scads of Canon and Fuji gear behind, spending a couple of weeks in Costa Rica armed only with the Q3.
Omg I used to love roaming around the Scottish Highlands with my Mamiya 7II so your comments have n’t helped as I’m obviously back here again and thinking about the Q3. Trouble is, as much as I can afford it is soooo very expensive and I’ve had a bad experience with an M10-R for a year before returning to my beloved Fuji. I now have a X100v and GFX100. Umm, tough choice.
I am still taking photos using the Mamiya 7, so I would like to ask you, given your similar experiences with film photography, why did you choose Leica’s Q series over the M series, as the M series offers 35mm and 50mm focal lengths. I have also been considering switching to digital photography recently.
I am no stranger to Leica, having owned an M4P, R8, R9, M8, M9, M240, and an SL. I have "returned" to Leica with the Q3 to have a simple solution for image gathering during travels. For example, I have made four lengthy photo shoots in Southern Africa, carrying a lot of Canon and Leica gear. While those shoots were quite productive, everyday seemed like work. Now with the Q3, I will let images come to me, rather than chasing them all day long. @@zhangchenlin7746

I hv wanted a Q3 since it came out, but I can’t see me being able to buy one, so I was thinking - perhaps like u ? - that I would buy aQ to see if I Really like the system…. But I don’t really want a Q, I want the Q3 for its 60mp so I can crop, so I shoot at 35/50, etc, still with a good quantity of mp’s. I want the moveable screen so I shoot low down, or hi up… Also the lightness is a draw, and the (better ?!) connection to my phone … I guess I hv to count my money again … // But thks so much for really informative review, and the brilliant pics !!
Gear might inspire me for a very short time, but it’s never fueled me creatively long term. Spent a lot of money to learn that lesson. I’m not dogging people who get inspired by their gear … I wish $$$ could solve that problem for me (and I have Canon, Fuji, and Leica). Why not ricoh gr3 if you bought it because of lightness / size ? Have a hard time believing the Q3 is the best camera to buy if those are your priorities, but welcome to any feedback.
Nice review, I had the same sentiment from my M10 with 3 lenses to this. Are you using any film simulations in this video? or post processing with your setup?
You place a lot of emphasis on weight and general portability. As a Sony user, did you consider a SONY RX1rii? It is super light compared to the Q system. I say that as someone who has both and absolutely loves the Q3 and Q2M. But they are certainly bigger and heavier than the Sony.
I’ve considered that camera for years. In 2024 I’d rather wait for the mark iii and its VF isn’t up to snuff for what I’d like. When they make the next version I’ll 100% give it a shot.
thanks for the video. is there any difference in dynamic range between full resolution dng and dngs of smaller sizes? I ask because canon and sony suffer DR losses in medium and small raws.
@@julienajarry I know that but that wasn’t the point . Watch your video that’s why I said you could also said it has an excellent lens and I didn’t say anything it’s like m . I have even SL lens that are superior main point it’s a Leica hello
This was exactly the perspective I was looking for, thanks. Full-time Sony shooter but want path of least resistance for personal work and HATED the X100V (hot garbage and all hype)... This made up my mind on the Leica Q3. Cheers mate!
I am 100% on the same page with wanting the Q3 to be a true 28mm. That being said -- I wanted to ask if you have experiemented mutch with doing a 1.5x crop to roughly a 35mm? The Q2 had just few enough megapixels to not make it worth it but the Q3 has made me interested in the crop function.
I’m sorry the tone in my voice communicated that to you. There are plenty of other small cameras, yes. If you name off a few, I will give you specific reasons as to why those don’t compete, for me. The Q3 is full frame. Let’s start there.
Interesting camera I had a question ! What would make someone buy this over a Leica m10/11 with a nice lens instead of? Much smaller setup and has the ability to switch lenses. Arguably a genuine Leica experience at least from my view ! Lovely photos btw !❤
Thanks for the question. My answer is I’m not a huge rangefinder guy and like the autofocus. That’s why I’m a Q guy but not an M guy as lovely as the cameras are.
Great video and as a Leica user (SL2) I would like to "add" it as I dont think I could use only the Q3. Could you survive with only the Q3 or do you still need your Sony stuff? Cheers Ian (UK)
I went GFX, aahhh that beautiful weight lol, looking forward to that up the trail, was thinking I should have got a Q3, then started editing the images from the GFX….. damn they are good, if I could only have both, would be the perfect combo.
Thank you so much. In order of what I’ve been shooting lately I’m probably at f8 most of the time, f1.7 or f2 for some things where I want separation, f11 when I need even more depth.
@@julienajarry I think so. I love my Q2 but I’m A videographer as well. The added video features, tilt screen and upgrades to the autofocus system make the Q3 a very practical and capable travel camera for me. I’m not super in love with the rage finder experience (that’s why I got rid of my M10R). I have A LOT of cameras. That Q3 ticks a ton of boxes that no other camera really does.

thank you
As a Q2 owner I am debating between the Q3 or the Q3-43.
That's up to your focal length preference and I wouldn't plan on cropping. I don't roll like that.
Jaw dropping images
hey thanks!!
great images Julien
Thank you!
thanks for the video.
is there any difference in dynamic range between full resolution dng and dngs of smaller sizes?
I ask because canon and sony suffer DR losses in medium and small raws.
Thank you. There shouldn’t be a DR difference, no.
beautiful photos!
thank you
And you did forget you have a super excellent lens !!! Same cost of that camera
Ha yes. Unfortunately, though they share the same name, the Q lens and M 28mm f1.4 are not the same.
@@julienajarry I know that but that wasn’t the point . Watch your video that’s why I said you could also said it has an excellent lens and I didn’t say anything it’s like m . I have even SL lens that are superior main point it’s a Leica hello
@@julienajarry next time before you reply read my sentences first
OK, sorry it’s hard for me to understand. You are saying I should have mentioned it has an excellent lens?
These photos, that you have been showing, have they been post processed? Or are they SOOC?
Cheers

Feel like I gotta get a Q3 now, lol. Thanks Julien!
Haha thanks!
This was exactly the perspective I was looking for, thanks. Full-time Sony shooter but want path of least resistance for personal work and HATED the X100V (hot garbage and all hype)... This made up my mind on the Leica Q3. Cheers mate!
Thank you!
I love this bud ❤ enjoy this adventure
Thanks bro!
Amazing review!!!! 🎉🎉🎉
hey thanks!
Well said man. Great video
thank you
Great vid. Thanks. Really liking the panoramic aspect ratios for landscape.
Glad you liked it!
I really don't like the crop experience. I wish the frame lines weren't there and the evf filled with the entire image.
Now I need a Q3 :). What field of view do you shoot on the Gopro for the vlogs?
Hey thanks. 8:7.
How did you take those panos? Were they just crops?
yes, crops
When did you order your Q3? I have preordered since August last year and still nothing😢
I bought it used.
You say because its light as if its the only light camera. There's a lot of high quality cameras that are as small and light.
I’m sorry the tone in my voice communicated that to you. There are plenty of other small cameras, yes. If you name off a few, I will give you specific reasons as to why those don’t compete, for me. The Q3 is full frame. Let’s start there.
Dope video Julien. Have you shot any video with it?
Thank you!! Yes I have actually. Solid camera.
I have the M11 it is more pro camera to me. But sometimes when I’m on holiday I want someone to take my picture then can then use the Q3 😂
Great video and as a Leica user (SL2) I would like to "add" it as I dont think I could use only the Q3. Could you survive with only the Q3 or do you still need your Sony stuff? Cheers Ian (UK)
Thanks. I can survive for a long time until I need a 50mm f1.2 GM or 70-200mm f2.8 GM ii to capture a specific image the Q can’t.
Just stumbled upon your chanel. 2 things: I am in love with your crops! And i am in love with your editing of the images. Great work man.
Thank you so much!
Can you shoot 65:24 pano format ratio in camera?
Not without guessing the end result
??@@julienajarry
I went GFX, aahhh that beautiful weight lol, looking forward to that up the trail, was thinking I should have got a Q3, then started editing the images from the GFX….. damn they are good, if I could only have both, would be the perfect combo.
Oh yea!
What if you scratch the lens?
then you scratch the lens
Making magic with that camera. What aperature do you typically shoot with? So much depth in your photos.
Thank you so much. In order of what I’ve been shooting lately I’m probably at f8 most of the time, f1.7 or f2 for some things where I want separation, f11 when I need even more depth.
Share with us your .lcs file!
what is that?
Nice photos
Thank you so much 😀
@@julienajarry welcome
makes me want to have one😂
glad you liked the video!
Hey, can I ask where you got that awesome hat?
Which one?
tan colored cap you're wearing in most of this vid @@julienajarry
Which preset at 3:15?
they're all the VeryGoodPresets P400 use code JULIEN
@@julienajarry Thanks so much. Will buy.
It's not a 25mm. The lens suffers from focus breathing.
ehhhh
This is so sick! Been eyeing a Leica and this was super informative 🙏🏽
Thanks dude!
nice vid
hey thanks
I subscribed
Thanks!!
I didn’t know that 28mm was a 24/5mm. This news kinda reduced my gigantic hype for this camera 😢
Yea…
8k tag price in Canada
Yea it’s not cheap
I need to find someone with buyers remorse and trade my Q2 + M6 for the Q3
You’d trade your Q2 and M6 for a Q3??
@@julienajarry I think so. I love my Q2 but I’m
A videographer as well.
I’m here because I wanna buy Q3 this year. May God help me to get it this year😂🎉🎉🎉❤❤
amen
It's the best Panasonic Leica make.
