A lot of people are looking to find it on Avid‘s website. You’re not gonna find it there yet, they have agreements with vendors who sell their products to give them the first chance to sell it to their customers. This link below, will take you to RSPE where you can clearly see that it’s available, you can also see everything else available there. www.rspeaudio.com/avid-pro-tools-studio-perpetual-license
I'm not convinced; there is a detail they left out... I am a perpetual owner as well, and if I go off the support plan my PT stays where it is. That much is true. However if I ever want to update my PT in the future I will need to either buy perpetual all over again or get on the subscription. Because my support plan is slightly cheaper than the subscription, it makes sense to keep paying the support plan (though admittedly I'd rather not). Given that my PT is not very stable (my M1 system is newer and all current) I welcome any updates that improve its reliability. I would confirm that you can get back on the support plan once it's lapsed. I doubt that this is available.
@@Carbonlifemedia Yeah, that's what I suspect too. If you don't pay the $199 EVERY year, then you have to start over. From what I've been seeing, this is really no different from the way it has been. They've had time to update their web site to reflect this "big news" and U-Turn, but I'm not seeing it. I've never considered PT because of their ridiculous pricing model, not to mention their lack of innovation over the last, um, decade, but would consider it if things really change. I guess we'll have to wait a little longer to determine if this is all just more BS from the new owner.
Hi Barry, I had moved completely off Protools too. I was contacted by an Avid support person who listened to my concerns and reinstated my perpetual licence. I even got a year of upgrades. I went back because I love the software and the environment works for ne. Probably because I've used it fir so long. All the best with your decision
Switched from Pro Tools to Studio One Pro 8 years ago and I love it! Running it now on an AMD 5900X / ProArt Motherboard (Thunderbolt equipped) PC with Quantum 2626 interface and it's been a beast!
I used Pro Tools perpetual license, let it lapse, had a computer upgrade, traded in the lapse license for the subscription. I just rebought the perpetual license again at $600. I’m a mostly Cubase Pro user but got Pro Tools because I was working with another studio that used it and it was a big pain to go back and forth between apps. Clip Gain is one PT feature that Cubase needs to have. I’ll continue to use both programs.
Hey Barry, slow down a little bit Brotha! This is Avid we’re talking about, how many times have you gone back to her only for her to cheat on you again? Today she’s whispering sweet lullabies in your ear, but I know you know better. Deep down, you do know don’t you?
Berry Ive used 3 different daws in the past and decided years ago to do all my work inside fl studio and have never paid a dollar more then what i paid it in the start. I have fl studio 10 phyiscal disc.
I switched from Protools to Reaper about 5 or so years ago but started to use Protools again this January as most of my work comes in as Protools sessions. I'm very happy that they went back to perpetual and once my subscription runs out in January 2024 I will get a perpetual license for sure.
You will also have to enjoy one of Ableton's best feature. Avid is implementing a session view type feature in protools. That! is a left curve that no one saw coming! Hopefully it's well implemented.
Upgraded mine - after several years, option was there for me on my account. Happy to go back with these prices. I love Logic but I've never been as fast in it. Pure editing and working with audio kicks Logics butt! Now I've just got to remember how to use it again!
Thanks for the video, Barry! Oh... Man! That's cool I guess but it's hard to imagine going back after all this time. I've moved my whole workflow over to Reaper and I'm loving it. Sorry Avid. In the last few years my clients don't even ask me about Pro Tools anymore. Also, my Omni and my 192's are in my slave rack these days. I guess it's nice to know I could go back if there was a reason to down the road. But... Generally I'd say it's WAAAAY too late. It's too bad. I used to love using Pro Tools. What a Bummer.
This has just inspired me to open her up again. I won't be parting with the readies until after I act out various other impulse-stimuli type inspirations ... but this is a good start! Thank You for sharing.
Nah. I've been using PT since my trusty 7100. I just finished a mix project with Harrison Mixbus and I'm good with where I am. Great news for those going back.
Buying protools upfront is actually what prevented me from every buying it because it was too expensive. The subscription made it possible to at least download it and try it out for a much lower initial cost. :) I'm glad they have both options now!
I’ve been prepping my setup getting ready to move off pro tools and it is a big hassle. I was concerned that I would be forced off perpetual at some point so I was locking in a version to keep access to my work. It looks like I won’t need to worry about it now. One thing that I think would be a big help for people would be a tutorial on how to properly archive stems so that they will be available on any software. Basically a file management system. Anyway, thanks again !
I still view Avid is an unforgivable company. Once the projects I have started and been working on for months are complete, 100% done, and something I don't need to think about.. I'll be jumping over to Studio One or something else. I am, as of making this comment, a paying customer. 30 dollars a month and they still absolutely REFUSE to take me and other subscribers phone calls when we have the predictable technical problems. No, they expect us to pay a completely separate subscription fee or 30-50 dollars a month for phone support. That is unreal. And no matter how deep into an email chain you get with Avid, they WILL. NOT. CALL. YOU. without you paying them. I'd like to spit at their feet.
Ever since I got into recording and mixing, I chose Pro Tools willingly actually. Never used it as a perpetual license but I am genuinely happy that perpetual licenses are back. It’s odd however, these aren’t available for purchase directly from Avid but they’re back which is really important in my opinion to those that use it to this day in that way. I might even buy one for myself in the future, I gotta study my financials before that step but now having this option it’s better for sure. In the first place, I think they should’ve just not removed perpetual altogether and keep things untouched and focus on improving the software which is something that really needs to happen in so many fronts! Great video once again, Barry!
This is so weird! I recently stopped a second pro tools license said exactly this to them. So I am amazed you’re suddenly announcing this change! Have to check what’s in it for me
As an artist, that sometimes gets on a recording kick for several months and other times doesn't record at all, perpetual is great. I let my PT subscription lapse in August hoping for a sale to come back around, but in the meantime if I want to open some files I can't. If I had had a perpetual license, even if it was a version that was a few years old, I could at least still occasionally jump in to pull up sessions while waiting for a sale to come back around, or at least jump in to export some tracks/stems to use in a different DAW. I'll be picking up a perpetual license, if for no other reason than to have it during those times when I'm rarely recording, but would like PT to be there for me just in case inspiration hits (or time), without having to sign up for another subscription.
Totally agree with you, Barry. I also left Pro Tools for exactly the same reason. I had to learn a lot to use Cubase, but that's what I was willing to do: the freedom to decide for YOURSELF what you spend money on! In the meantime, I don't know if I can run my old PT12 on a new Macbook. That's why I'm going to continue with Cubase.
I thought I bought the perpetual license this year but it was an upgrade from the Pro Tools 12 I bought in 2018. If I was forced to do the subscription thing I would go back to Cubase SX which was my first DAW from 2000 till 2007 until I switched to Pro Tools 7 and currently using
Great video Barry! Appreciate all you do and your honest insights. Very happy with the news yesterday. Like many of us here we use multiple daws but Pro Tools has some inherent strengths I use everyday with my projects. Logic, Ableton and Reason (now rack) all have their place, but being able to breathe easier knowing I’ll have a permanent license.
Hi, Barry. I have been following you since video #1. I started in Pro Tools later than you, in 2004, and I used it until version 2020.11, stopping because of the subscription model. I have since bought Studio One 6 Professional 6, Cubase Pro 12, Ableton Suite 11 and even Reason 12. I enjoyed using all of them and honestly it was amazing learning them and using them. It was great seeing that other DAWs were just as good - or better in many cases. I ended up recording and publishing my songs with Studio One and Cubase Pro 12, but I still have all the licenses for the other DAWs I bought - and I still have my perpetual license of my beloved Pro Tools 2020.11. I will most likely get up to date with my perpetual license of Pro Tools and see what is new with my old favourite DAW, and I will consider going back to using it for sure. I understand you completely! But one thing I will not do is sell all DAWs I bought - or stop using them completely. I learnt one lesson: our "music eggs" are too precious to belong to ANY one basket (DAW, i.e., company). This mistake I will never do again. From now on, music first, tool second.
I agree here. I got Pro Tools working again after an update. I still feel though that they are not being fully fair. If you use many of the plugins are subscription based - including Heat. I can live without it but I still feel that if you throw money their way you should still be able to keep the package as a whole running. Fair enough after time we pay a bit to upgrade - as you would buying a new version but don’t disable plugins that are included and Heat - which is now part of the DAW. I think Heat should be standard. Silly crap like that hasn’t stopped my interest but makes me cautious. Pro Tools could be leading the way still it’s still got the best editing interface. It’s smooth as well on a Mac and looks slicker than ever.
Really appreciate straightforward and common sense approach to all of the areas in music production you share ... and "without" question ... all of your substantive elements are "Top-Shelf" ... thank you very much!!
Just to point out something history timeline, Avid was already in when you started your Pro tools journey. Avid had bought digidesign in 94, they just incorporated them in the Avid financial books and rebranded digidesign to Avid's banner in 2010.
It almost seems that over the years Avid has automatically assumed that everyone using their products are professionals. I am a home based hobbyist guitar player that loves music and always strive for the best setup that I can, starting with Digidesign 002. I have the HD native and HD Thunderbolt hardware along with every iteration of Pro Tools back to the beginning. I know that I have spent close to $20K over the years which is crazy for a non-professional like me but I love guitar playing and music in general that much. For us loyal users and supporters of Avid I hope that they keep us in mind and allow us to upgrade at our own pace. It definitely gets expensive for us old retired noodlers.
Yes, I agree with using what you know best that will help you make music. I am a Cubase Pro 12 user. In the early years of my digital recording, I was a Logic user, but when Apple bought them, I decided on going with Cubase. I tried using Pro Tools from versions 9-12, I ultimately went back to Cubase because I know it like the back of my hand.
I lapsed Pro Tools in 2019 due to years of paying for almost nothing. The subscription was the final straw. I took a look at Studio One and realised everything I would gain by switching. I've naturally always kept an eye on Pro Tools and bit by bit they appear to be competing again. The new Ableton-like Sketchpad looks great to me. I'm also curious about their new instruments, especially Groovecell. Studio One's Impact is fine, yet I prefer an integrated sequencer with my drum plugins. They've got ARA integration with Melodyne too (I use Revoice Pro). I'm very curious...but Studio One generally suits me, therefore, my next project will continue in Studio One.
They seem to be doing a much better job. But it feels like studio one has pulled so far ahead in many areas. Still some things I miss about tools, but studio one keeps pulling further ahead in many ways
@@CarlyonProduction. I wouldn't switch back to Pro Tools from Studio One at present. It's easy to get carried away. Studio One has just introduced surround sound. I shall probably never use this feature but I'm glad it's been added. It reminds me that Studio One's developers are constantly providing major updates for their users.
I've been in ProTools since 1994. Besides being an industry standard, it really doesn't have much go for it today. You have to buy the hardware for it to even start to make sense and that's only if you're doing a lot of live tracking and like the reduced latency.
thanks for this video Barry, it's very interesting that they dropped the notorious Reinstatement model for expired support plans and let you jump on the current version (for $399 if you have Ultimate like me). They had introduced this license model some time ago with Protools Carbon and now have put it to general effect across the entire ProTools software range. Now we just need a sweet Black Friday offer for the upgrades haha!
I do like what they have integrated into the new ProTools ecosystem, as of this new update. Melodyne and the new Sketch is very cool. I can now, also, update my perpetual license! YAY!!!
Excellent commentary. I’ve had similar opinions, its about companies making great products and then supporting them for a reasonable amount of time. Subscription model has thrown a monkey wrench, blurred the lines of ownership vs lease vs product support..
Good for yu Barry johns….heartfelt….I’ve always worked in cubase and ableton but wanted to mess with pro tools….but not with subscription only. Goes to show companies like avid and waves can’t just blow off their customer base…..
Interesting thing for me is that I just switched to ProTools earlier this year and was able to purchase a perpetual license through Zzounds. Either way... It's great to see what Avid is doing at this moment and hope they continue to evolve and continue listening to their user base. Thanks for the vids Barry.
What will be really frustrating is the caveat that your license will only work for the current OS. If apple updates the latest OS in the near future, your copy will no longer be supported. That’s been my experience to my utter dismay
Same here Barry...used PT since it came out, tried all the others, finally because of pricing learned Cubase Pro and I like it a lot. Am I faster with PT? Maybe not anymore...but...am I more comfortable? Yes. So I have them both on my drive and on intense midi orchestrated pieces I use Cubase. On straight up rock, country, etc, I use PT. I have perpetual so I'm in the same place you are!
I use Cubase 12 pro but ever since I upgraded my system to 13th Gen Intel I have had stability issues especially during start up and it's very frustrating. Would you recommend Pro Tools over Cubase in regards to work flow and stability?
@@PurpleMusicProductions Overall, I like the workflow of PT better. I can move tracks around in the mixer (which you can't in Cubase or Logic), I can have folder tracks in the mixer (can't in Cubase) and it just seems more streamlined. Cubase is like flying an Airbus vs Pro Tools is like a fighter jet. Both are great, Cubase has many more cool features. It's really a preference thing. Neither program has crashed on me for a long time.
@@TheAerovons many thanks for your insight and perspective as I will definitely take that into consideration. I appreciate it. Also¿after talking with a mixing engineer that I respect who has yet to steer me wrong, he said I should strongly at least think about PT. I think what I will do is run PT for tracking, editing and etc, but use Cubase for mixing, because of its pretty cool layout although I will keep an open mind during the process. I do have some VST investment in Cubase that is a pillar of my setup for at least for now so I cannot just toss it. PT seems to have a ton of learning resources, such as books and videos available unlike Cubase. Never thought I would say this, but PT has definitely been added to my to do list.
@@PurpleMusicProductions Sounds like a plan. The control room in Cubase is really cool for quickly switching from your mix to a ref mix too. Lots of little differences. Cubase doesn't have a true "erase" mode when doing midi. If you play a midi track back and punch in manually without playing anything nothing gets erased, as it does in PT, which works like a tape machine. Irritating lol.....and I hate Cubase's file handling. You can't even back up a session without creating a whole new folder for the backup (PT does this automatically). And to start a project in Cubase you have to create a folder, then put the session in that folder. Then NAME the session once it opens. Oh my. ;).....Still I love many things about a Cubase and there is no law that says you can only have ONE DAW....so I will probably keep and use both depending on the project for the immediate future. You may find the same, good luck with it. If you have any PT questions feel free to write oceantracks@mac.com.
@@TheAerovons Update, I got Pro Tools perpetual and I am still getting my head around it, but actually like it. There are some quirks and learning bumps, but the clip editing is absolutely beast mode. Not to create a nuclear fallout, but I prefer the sound engine of Pro Tools as opposed to Cubase as I listened to several mixes of the same songs and they sounded different. I heard it immediately. When I checked them both on a neutral media player, PTs sounded either the closest or identical. These tonal differences changed my mixing decisions. I cannot wait to fully understand PTs going forward.
I dumped Pro Stools 10 years ago after dealing with Avid. I did repurchase it recently just so I can open my older projects. Lets see what the Avid future brings. Or takes.
Great job Avid!! Gotta give props to new owners. I have an old Educational license PT 12 I may have to start from scratch but this price is more than fair
Well, that’s really good news!! I’ve been eyeballing other DAW‘s, and have not been too happy with the thought of moving away from protools, but I was in the same boat as you, as far as not liking the way they were doing business And taking options away. My subscription will be up this year and I think I will stick with them and cross grade back over to perpetual. Thanks for the update Barry.
@@Gang-25j for sure, but I was thinking about getting away from them due to the removal of the perpetual license. Now that it’s back, I’ll be able to stick with what I’ve got for a while when my subscription runs out.
Good thoughts and well said! Thank you. I'm a composer who creates in Logic, but I'm a recording and post production engineer who edits mixes, sound designs and rerecords TV and film in Pro Tools. My biggest woes come from instability of just simplly how Pro Tools is written...but, I've been using them since it was DECK and then Sound Designer and SDII up to now. Pro Tools is a tool and if a better one comes along that serves me better (per your thoughts) then I use that tool, but I haven't been able to completely abandon Pro Tools yet due to TV and Film project compatibility with others. I will tell you though that Resolve it becoming VERY attractive which just means that along with Cubase/Nuendo, Studio One, Logic and a few others, there is some pretty aggressive development happening to provide us all with awesome options. As long as this continues, Pro Tools will have to continue to evolve - or die. Just glad I can keep making music and engineering sound and glad there is more than one way to do that. Thanks again for your thoughts!
I went away from pro tool because they take too long to give good updates. now I went back to use-pro tools for the same reason. I like the last update they did and because I have the choice to buy the perpetual license.
I really appreciate what you are saying in this video. You've been using Pro Tools for many years and having switched to Cubase/Nuendo, I'm certain there are things that are different that you've discovered. I'm sure most listeners of music wouldn't be able to hear the difference between the two tools. I first purchased Cubase in 2011 (version 6) and then Pro Tools in 2014 (version 11) because it was, and still is, considered the industry standard. I now have the latest versions of both. I really was considering totally going back to Cubase exclusively and not using Pro Tools any more but, like many others, I really like Pro Tools. I think it's a bit early to see what will ultimately happen with Pro Tools. What will the new ownership of Pro Tools do over the next year or so. Sure, you can leave again if they decide to do something else that's not in the user community's best interest. In the past they haven't kept up with trends in their feature set and their bug resolution isn't exactly what we all would want. My support renewal is up in February and I'll most likely continue with my perpetual version support for another year or so just to see where this is going. Yeah, I agree bringing back the perpetual licensing is a good thing but in the long run what else is going to keep users happy or will the new owners just want a money grab and continue in the ways Avid has done for the past several years. I appreciate your channel and your views!!! Keep the videos coming!!! 😎🎶
Your video made me think of a phrase my kid has on a t-shirt: “Welcome to the dark side… we have cookies.” The missing fine print is that you’re not aloud to eat them... it is the dark side after all. 😂
as a guy who is trying to figure out which daw to switch to i would be interested in seeing a good video on the strengths and weaknesses of the various DAWs
That’s subjective to the features that are important to each person. I don’t do much midi, so I don’t require a lot, others may do nothing but extensive MIDI, so they have different needs.
Even better thing would be they add rent to own so you get perpetual after 2-3 years of subscription payment. And then you can choose to continue or skip few versions...
I’ve had protools since the 90’s but I’ve never liked it. I switched to Cubase in 1999 and I never looked back. I’m in Nashville so I have to have PT but I never work in it unless I have to and mostly to consolidate file and then import then into Cubase. My main reason has always been the comping function for vocals. It’s always been three times faster for me than PT and then Variaudio was a game changer. I can comp and tune a vocal on the fly while cutting vocals with the right artist and they never even feel it or feel like they loose the vibe. Of course there are things in Cubase that I’d like that they don’t have but I can’t see ever going to another DAW. I will say I may need to spend that $200 to get up to date but I’ll hold my nose while I’m doing it. I really appreciate your channel and opinions! Us old guys need to stay together! 🤣
I switched to Logic 14 months ago and I would definitely say Logic and ableton are way better than Protools. Protools is so far behind these DAWs and was so apparent when I started learning them. I couldn’t believe all the things i was missing out on. Time stretching or Quantizing in Protools is an absolute joke compared to compared to logic and ableton this alone saves me 1-3 hours per song I need to finish so that basically alone in the last year has saved me 100 hours. There is nothing Protools could do at this point to get me to go back. So I kinda disagree when you say they are all the same because in my opinion that are wildly different. Also thank you for your videos they are awesome!
When I saw the update they rolled out today unexpectedly I immediately thought of you. I didn’t know you rolled out this video either, it seems that Avid is slowly turning their head towards the right direction, we’ll see.
I considered leaving over the last few years, but I decided to stay because of the investment of Avid hardware and it wasn’t possible learning another DAW on the job that has been so busy.
I am so with you here. I have been using Pro Tools for over 20 years but not professionally. I don't have the time to learn something new. But I had no interest in paying a monthly fee when these days I can go months without having a chance to use it. I have 2018 perpetual now but I am going to consider getting a perpetual artist license for only $199 to use with newer systems. The pricing is spot on in my opinion.
This is great news for me! I have 5 rigs with Ultimate Perpetual that run out this month and to NOT have to pay $2K immediately (399x5) is a relief! I can hang on 2023.9 for as many months as I choose without handcuffs! Good move AVID! This is the way it USED TO BE and SHOULD BE!
Only issue is that the perpetual licenses does not offer free upgrades, and before the license didn't offer avid features such as their Pro Plugin Bundle and HEAT.
I got the perpetual studio version of PTs for a really great price and I really like it. For tracking and mixing it DEFINITELY will be my work horse, however for composing, midi and virtual instruments, Cubase will remain. Now I sort of see why PTs is the industry standard. Does it have quirks, clunky behaviors or some things should be more straightforward? Yes absolutely but the clip editing all in one window is really good.
I never left Avid. I was hoping this was going to happen and I’m elated. There’s a reason so many professionals still love Pro Tools. To each their own. 👍🏼
I’m not getting the perpetual licence option because my previous Pro Tools version was way too old. It’s still only available as a subscription for me.
Okay am I missing something....? Perp License has always been available! Ive had it in my sweetwater cart several times! it was the blue and white cover art not the black and purple one....am I crazy??!
Not only that, but they were always behind of features compared to most daws out there. So they still need to learn to listen to their customers and keep up with the competition.
May be too late for this IMO but at least PT is again a contender. I jumped ship (like most of us) after the subscription model and got on with other DAW's. Although I still like going back to mix in good old PT version 12 on my older system from time to time. Curious to see what their latest offerings are all about. I wonder how well current PT plays with some other tools I've gotten used to since leaving the PT environment.
Yezzir!! Happy to see you back Barry!! Protools might be changing there ways after that computer bought them maybe. Can't wait for all the integration they have coming up. Can't wait to see your new video's and technics in Protools
I agree wholeheartedly. I got a years worth of Pro Tools for purchasing an MBOX Studio. I’ve been hesitating on how much time to invest in it because I do not want to pay for a subscription. This change may change my mind since Perpetual will be an option. That said, one other thing I find equally as bad and may cause me to go elsewhere is their terrible support program. I’m just an ordinary home user wanting to set it all up and learn as I go. But, when I get stuck, they should back their products and have the backs of their customers by providing support for at least a year or two to get you comfortably up and running. By doing so, that would make me keep coming back. So, they seem to be in correction mode, hopefully support is next. Like you said, the competition is out there as alternatives.
I literally have been debating on whether or not to get current with my pro tools from 2017 which they were going to charge $275 as of a day or so ago. I’m glad I waited to pull the trigger. This decision by acid is much more in line with other DAWs, so hopefully it means they’re on the right path
A lot of people are looking to find it on Avid‘s website. You’re not gonna find it there yet, they have agreements with vendors who sell their products to give them the first chance to sell it to their customers. This link below, will take you to RSPE where you can clearly see that it’s available, you can also see everything else available there.

Reading is so fundamental lol... I saw this video and went looking for it no avail but this comment explains why... thanks again
But it true and validated... I went to Sweetwater and you can see the licenses available for sale
Avid made me switch to abelton live .. at first it was tough but now is hard for me to go back to avid after discovering how amazing abelton live is.
what do you think of the end product quality vs the two?
I used Pro Tools perpetual license, let it lapse, had a computer upgrade, traded in the lapse license for the subscription. I just rebought the perpetual license again at $600. I’m a mostly Cubase Pro user but got Pro Tools because I was working with another studio that used it and it was a big pain to go back and forth between apps. Clip Gain is one PT feature that Cubase needs to have. I’ll continue to use both programs.
I am considering going to Pro Tools as well. Cubase does have clip gain, you grab the track in the middle white box and raise or lower it.
It has clip gain, in inspector higher on top. Or you can do it via mouse wheel, but you need to tick that option in settings
WE THE PEOPLE have the POWER!!! Barry you have a VOICE, you speak for us. They have heard you loud & clear. Congrats!!!
Once bitten twice shy. They are losing customers big that's why they changing.when they get you back they will find a way to screw you again.
They got bought out by a different company. That’s why they’re changing things up
Exactly same thing that I was thinking. They’ll get you back…then figure out another way to screw you again.
@@MarcPlaysDrumsThe new guys are Indian Tech giants. They may just have their shite together.
😊🎉
no they weren’t losing customers they have the most customers they’ve ever had
I'd like to spit at their feet.
after hearing this i went straight to the website. Thanks for voicing the minds of the people and making avid to hear us.
Thank you Barry, I treasure your channel.
Much appreciated
Going on 68 still pushing your a young lad
Reaper is definitely worth learning… it’s incredible man.
Have been tempted by reaper! What are the advantages over pro tools, that stand out to you most?
Have to check what’s in it for me
Hard PT user here. Switched to cubase and now nuendo also with your help 😅
Probably one of the smartest things Avid has done.
I’ve used Pro Tools for years, I’ve always loved it and I still do. You guys can keep talking about it ,I’ve got mix’s to do.
thanks for take the time to share. i have a apollo but i still feel more solid my old tdm system
I’ve done so many session on protools I felt like I’d loose everything If I didn’t keep paying the subscription thanks for this update
Thank you for speaking for me. We're in the same exact boat.
YES! Reason Studios taught me that lesson, in spades. I will not be beholden to any one DAW when there's so many options.
I appreciate that!
I started with Digi Session 8 in 1995 but stopped using Pro Tools about 8 years ago. I've been waiting on this for a while.
Same here!!! Then into TDM, then moved one more time. I quit using them 6 years ago.
Not sure what to make of this
Just to point out something history timeline, Avid was already in when you started your Pro tools journey. Avid had bought digidesign in 94, they just incorporated them in the Avid financial books and rebranded digidesign to Avid's banner in 2010.
True, but it’s not that simple. There was a noticeable change after that, a restructuring of the team, and that is when the change started to go down.
@BarryJohns oh not denying that, Hernendez was not the man for the job and it definitely made things go awry
I wonder if Adobe will learn from THEIR mistake.
To a degree you are not wrong.
Pro tools for life I been using pro tools since pt7 mbox days never switching
I’m on PT7 right now on an old 2002 Mac 😵💫
Just upgraded to an M3 MacBook Pro so I’m glad the perpetual license came back
thanks for this video Barry,
it's very interesting that they dropped the notorious Reinstatement model for expired support plans and let you jump on the current version (for $399 if you have Ultimate like me).
They had introduced this license model some time ago with Protools Carbon and now have put it to general effect across the entire ProTools software range.
Now we just need a sweet Black Friday offer for the upgrades haha!
Thanks for all you do and welcome back to the real deal !
Thanks for the news. I just upgraded my perpetual. 🙌🏻
Good for yu Barry johns….heartfelt….I’ve always worked in cubase and ableton but wanted to mess with pro tools….but not with subscription only. Goes to show companies like avid and waves can’t just blow off their customer base…..
Thank you Barry - Pro Tools Perpetual it is for me!! 😉
Barry do what you feel is right and enjoy making music that all that matters 👍👍
Barry I juste want to thank you for your honesty all along your youtube journey cheers from Paris
🙏
I Started on Pro Tools 5! 😃
Yea me too
Interesting thing for me is that I just switched to ProTools earlier this year and was able to purchase a perpetual license through Zzounds.
The big studios are not in charge of the market. It’s us! I hope they run masterfully after the damage. We want advances and transparency 😉
But Big Industry Facilities are in bed with Avid along with Education.
I dumped Pro Stools 10 years ago after dealing with Avid. I did repurchase it recently just so I can open my older projects. Lets see what the Avid future brings. Or takes.
You’d think they would have learned from Waves! Studio One for the win. Especially now that it comes with the best integration of Atmos out there!
That’s the thing. Pro tools is doing great now. But studio one has pulled away in so many areas.
Great job Avid!! Gotta give props to new owners. I have an old Educational license PT 12 I may have to start from scratch but this price is more than fair
Finally purchased a perpetual today after 2016.
It’s just like every other daw
@@Gang-25j for sure, but I was thinking about getting away from them due to the removal of the perpetual license. Now that it’s back, I’ll be able to stick with what I’ve got for a while when my subscription runs out.
Possibly a sign that the company who bought avid is going to push them back in the right direction rather than gut them for parts?
I have a perpétuel licence and would be happy to pay à reasonable fée to upgrade to major software updates as many other days do
Good thoughts and well said!
Thanks so much for your great perspective. Understood, we have the perpetual option - hooray!
Your video made me think of a phrase my kid has on a t-shirt: “Welcome to the dark side… we have cookies.” The missing fine print is that you’re not aloud to eat them... it is the dark side after all. 😂
😜
as a guy who is trying to figure out which daw to switch to i would be interested in seeing a good video on the strengths and weaknesses of the various DAWs
I'm so glad I found your channel. I subscribed.
Welcome aboard!
Beautiful take and very well put. Have a great one!
When I saw the update they rolled out today unexpectedly I immediately thought of you. I didn’t know you rolled out this video either, it seems that Avid is slowly turning their head towards the right direction, we’ll see.
This is the reason I'm still on Pro Tools 11, I may upgrade now.
I considered leaving over the last few years, but I decided to stay because of the investment of Avid hardware and it wasn’t possible learning another DAW on the job that has been so busy.
Thanks for this, Barry.
Hey Barry, when will you do that video about Ferrofish Pulse and how you use it with your outboard gear?
I have one
@@BarryJohns well which one is it?
For me Studio one does everything I need.
Hey Barry, do you think you’ll stick with your current controllers? Or will you invest in their hardware again?
Only issue is that the perpetual licenses does not offer free upgrades, and before the license didn't offer avid features such as their Pro Plugin Bundle and HEAT.
Every major DAW charges for updates meaning Cubase, Logic, but waaay more infrequently, Avid, Studio One, Digital Performer.
Your right...thanks from Denmark
I never left Avid. I was hoping this was going to happen and I’m elated. There’s a reason so many professionals still love Pro Tools. To each their own. 👍🏼
Yes there’s a reason, because it’s like every other damn daw..holy shit 🤦🏾♂️
@@Gang-25jI see where you were going but that's not the reason at all 😂 also if you think ProTools and FL Studio are similar lol yikes
I love Protools
I’m not getting the perpetual licence option because my previous Pro Tools version was way too old. It’s still only available as a subscription for me.
Version 9 and later can get up to current with the Perpetual Upgrade
@@aeriehle The last one I have is 7.3 🤣
Thank you for all your videos and for your valuable information.👏
Will Avid Release a new HDX card ?
Okay am I missing something....? Perp License has always been available! Ive had it in my sweetwater cart several times! it was the blue and white cover art not the black and purple one....am I crazy??!
It has only been available for perpetual renewal not to buy outright.
Wow. Interesting turn of events.
So we can purchase and own now? No subscription ?
Yes
we have to have a full protools setup. but I tell my students to use logic.
