UPDATE: A lot of people are saying this demo is hotter than their 68 deluxe. 2 reasons - my les paul had the pickups very close to the strings at the time, and the bias was pretty hot (24mA). Since being lowered by a tech to 20mA, the amp no longer goes from clean to explosive crunch between 4-5 on the volume. A much more gradual increase.
Thats interesting. My favorite thing about the 68 Custom DR is the fact that it turns into a kick ass monster at 5 volume. Love playing Stones and Black Crowes stuff on this amp.

I finally landed a '68 Custom DRRI for myself because the guy who sold it to me was turned off by the excessive noise, when in standby, but not when playing. So I researched and talked with my amp guy and I'm gonna get that noise eliminated or reduced with some new caps, replacing the negative feedback resistor and redoing the shared vibrato and reverb setting the correct way. But even with the noise that it has now, the sound of the amp is wonderful. Much better than my previous rig, which was good but not classic Fender sounding enough. I also plan to use this amp to play some jazz and surf. All of those tones and variations are just inside the '68 waiting to come out.
By far the best review I have ever seen of musical equipment. This guy didn't even need to talk to show us how great this amp is. Also, I love the fact that he didn't start putting a fax black delay and others on it to start muddying up the town. He simply let you hear what the amplifier does. Great job!

You can trust this demo, I've been playing one for year and half at 100's of gigs. I've had Fender Twin II, Blues Jr and solidstate twin Chorus, Carvin Legacy, Vox AC30 , Peavey Classic 30 and a few modeling amps but the Fender DRRI is the best overall amp I have owned. It is light, versatility and takes to pedals like a duck to water if you really think you need to. The Celestion speaker gives of a nice Voxish whisper with a bite when you need it. Great value all around.
Please do more demos! The guitarist community on TH-cam needs you! I was already sold on this amp and thought I knew how versatile it is but your demo blew it out of the water! Thanks man!

Best demo of this amp on the tube. I never realised the deluxe could get so dirty. Sounds amazing with volume from 4 to 7. The perfect rock tones too my old ears. Judging by those tones I think I'd set the bias high even if the tubes didn't last quite as long

Thanks Andrew. I read this on a sweetwater post for this amp. Did you ever try it? "The two channels on this one are in phase so you can jumper them and play both channels at the same time. I jumper them and use the Bassman side like an effects loop(plug your guitar into input 1 on the vintage channel, run a cable from input 2 on the vintage channel to your effects pedal board, and return your board to channel 1 on the custom channel of the amp. viola! effects loop!) and leave the vintage side clean"
Yes, I forgot too add that into the demo! It is a cool way to blend extra bass into the vintage channel or sparkle into the custom. This trick works nice when you have room to crank it, that way either channel's characteristics can shine

Just came back around to this demo. I didn't own one of these when I first watched it. I've now owned one for close to a year and gigged regularly with it. The best overall amp I have ever owned. I'm not sure I need any other amp than this one. I play a Les Paul through mine. This demo is great by the way. Nice work.
@TunesDoneByOne Hi There. Yes it is definitely loud enough for an outdoor gig like you mention. I have used it at several outdoor gigs of that size (playing one at the end of this month) and this is actually when I get to turn it up to a volume where it is completely in the 'sweet spot'. It gets VERY loud. For this size of outdoor gig, I usually run the volume around 5 or 6 and this is really loud. For larger crowds/outdoor venues, you could always throw a mic in front of it too and run a little through the mains. I've also done this, but for the most part, I just use the amp without any mic.
@TunesDoneByOne No I have not had any experience with the Vibrolux, except to play in the music store. That said, I have heard that this is a very nice amp and the two 10" speakers make it cut through the mix nicely with a band. Although I have not used this amp live, I think it would definitely be a viable option.
I know this old,but still the most helpful demo of this amp. The one tone you missed is the Vintage side cranked to ten, treble 5ish, bass 3-4 and played on a 1958 era humbucker in bridge position w/tone around 7 = Early Billy Gibbons. Very Brownface sounding.
@@ajb_music94 only issue is the noise floor when cranked. The hiss is unbearable. Fender no help. Have you had this issue? Not an issue playing at home as I crank it but run through an attenuator. When I play live I am usually at 4 on volume and have Nobles for edge of breakup then with a Broadcast or a King Fuzz. Background hiss gets pretty annoying. Dirty looks from singer.

I love Blackface/Silverface amps, i truly love the mix of a humbucker (especially t-tops, minis or guild ones) or p90 guitar with the great mid scoop of that amps and this has it but with much more gain. I really want one of these of at least a Princeton Reverb of this series, but they are quite expensive here in Mexico. Otherwise, is impressive how you nailed the classic, 60's american psychedelic rock tones (think San Francisco bands like Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Country Joe and The Fish or Jefferson Airplane, or the later heavy psych groups from the midwest like Morly Grey and Top Drawer) on the lower gain settings of the "Vintage" channel and on the highest gain setting on the "Custom" channel it nails the Soundgarden/Alice In Chains thing wonderfully.
@@dannyrivers3922 I’ve never noticed any clicking but don’t use the vibrato often. It has a normal amount of hiss in my opinion .. it’s a big loud amp so it’s to be expected. If you’re someone who likes to play at low volumes you will notice the hiss more. But at that sweet spot between 3-5 on the volume, the hiss is barely noticeable. Even less so in a mix. Plus the tones this amp pushes are so worth any small amount of his it produces! Never found it to be problematic.
The 68 deluxe is hands down the best amp for under 3k. I have the 68 Vibroluxe as well. But the break up on the 68DR huts sooner and has a bit more mid range to the tonal character. This amp can do everything.
@@ajb_music94 I especially like running a strat or tele through the vintage channel, volume on 4-5, bass 6, treble 4.5, verb on 4 and a tube screamer TS9 on the front with all EQ at 10 o’clock.

Great job on the demo. I have the amp as well and overall its the best amp I have had ( Twins, Deluxe Reverb RI, Blues Jr, Vox AC15, and a Blace faced update to '72 Vibrolux Reverb). I highly recommend this amp, and you can pick them up a great price.

Great amp. Not perfect, might require some work if it gets noisy and upgrade of tubes, but a great amp. still. I tried one at GC and many others. Kept coming back to the '68 for that sparkly magic. Very touch sensitive which I also loved. Others talk about Dr. Z and Boogie, Matchless, Bad Cat and Magnatone (most expensive.) How would all you experts say they compare. Many talk hate for the Fender. I get that too- but the tone in the store at least was really nice. Magnatone Twilighter has outstanding tone and incredible Tremolo- the price is nuts however. Fender has nice enough Trem. too but I think it fails a lot. It is not the same build quality at all as the Magnatone. Most of the older Fender Reverbs I have tried it does not work- and they get loud (static.) Long story short- to get that Fender Reverb Chime...and maybe other goodness, what amp(s) do you all recommend? My take is Fender sells on it's name. Great tone out of the box, but over time, less satisfied owners. Maybe I am wrong? I also play low volume, in my house if that matters- 70db most times due to a ringing ear.
As everyone says, great demo. You show them the way it should be done. I wish I could find a Fender with a bit more range into dirty overdrive territory
Mine would hum & hiss so much that's all you'd hear. Has the trem tick and came out of the shipping box with a bad Custom channel #1 jack. Other than all that, hey, it's a great amp.
I never realized how much gain is in custom channel. With that Les Paul its crazy, need to play this again. I played one last week but with strat, and on Normal channel. Got to try this again with LP and check out the custom channel.
Great video. Makes me want this amp. I have a vox ac30 and would love to see a video in this style showing settings for achieving certain tones on that amp.

these 68 custom fender amps are really gems. I have the vibrolux and if you can crank it past 4 on the volume, it's heavenly!

Many talk hate for the Fender. I get that too- but the tone in the store at least was really nice. Magnatone Twilighter has outstanding tone and incredible Tremolo- the price is nuts however. Fender has nice enough Trem. too but I think it fails a lot. It is not the same build quality at all as the Magnatone. Most of the older Fender Reverbs I have tried it does not work- and they get loud (static.) Long story short- to get that Fender Reverb Chime...and maybe other goodness, what amp(s) do you all recommend? My take is Fender sells on it's name. Great tone out of the box, but over time, less satisfied owners. Maybe I am wrong? I also play low volume, in my house if that matters- 70db most times due to a ringing ear.

Mine would hum & hiss so much that's all you'd hear. Has the trem tick and came out of the shipping box with a bad Custom channel #1 jack. Other than all that, hey, it's a great amp.

I never realized how much gain is in custom channel. With that Les Paul its crazy, need to play this again. I played one last week but with strat, and on Normal channel. Got to try this again with LP and check out the custom channel.
