When a Xenophobic empire cut me off from getting my fleets to a certain system to kill the Ether Drake and proceeded to make one of said fleets go MIA, I carefully bought all the fleets I could from a Marauder Faction and proceeded to throw them through wormholes as shock troops meanwhile my fleets took their systems and reintegrated the native population of their core world into the fucking soil with orbital bombardment

The smile form the starfish feels genuine because the most threatening empire in the galaxy leader ship voted to Allie you because your species is cute and thier representative still bowed to you instead of treating you like a cute animal
When i have multiple vassals, i always treat one of them like a little brother so just in case the others revolt, i have a strong standing ally under my influence. Stellaris is a god tier game when you have a god tier imagination to go with it😂.

That feeling when you help a lesser race because they look cute or you feel bad for them. Then eventually they become your ally and nearly the backbone of the entire federation.
Recently this has been my play style every single playthrough: Build the most powerful military powerhouse to bully everyone into submission, pick the weakest pacifist empire, bonus points if it’s one of the cute ones, then make them my vassal and give them everything, making them my equals, or integrating them into my empire. One playthrough I had cultivated some primitives, built them up to be my most loyal vassals. Fought a war with some other Xenos on the other end of my territory who had Allie’s that began to attack my subjects, I was able to win the war but not before they lost their Homeworld. That’s when the gloves came off. Built my Juggernaught and waged a holy war until we not only took back their Homeworld for them, but took every single system the enemy had. And when it was over, I gifted my subject half of the conquered planets. They went from primitive tribes, to the second most powerful interstellar power in the Galaxy.

It depends. If there's no stressors on either species than the likelihood of genuine conflict arising isn't very high. A lot of people don't realize just how fucking huge a single galaxy is. Even with FTL, it'd take an absurd amount of time to populate a galaxy to the point where genuine conflict with another star empire in the same galaxy would be likely. Civil wars / secession wars would be much, much more common.
Reminds me of the Stellaris run I did has space age civilization next to me and I protected them and gave them part of my empire when they developed fully really early in the game eventually they became the economic super power in the galaxy while I built the biggest military and we ended up taking the rest of the galaxy over after becoming a federation

In one game the opposite happened to me, I wanted to play as an diplomatic, xenophilic and pacifist empire, and when I started the game I had a xenophobic, authoritarian and militaristic empire as my neighbor... we became friends

I ain't played higher than ensign before (I'll play admiral or something next playthroug) so after early game year I'm skyrocketing ahead of all the other empires and I am galactic counsel with more power than the other 2 counselors combined so safe to say I'll be in a federation with who ever I want to.
Started a federation with the only two empires stronger then me, we ended up killing all 3 fallen empires and ran the universe until another federation formed and it had 9 empires in it, despite them all being inferior to our fleets they destroyed my allies with numbers leaving me to defend against to many

Of course my first action against the Earth galactic federation was to take Earth and most the other humans land wiping them out besides one distant system surrounded by the Cith hive.
i DO form a federation with some schmuck, get my vassals in, then vote kick said, "co-founder" out, to have a Federation of Vassals. Bonus points when they become so weak that i can vassalize them too and "welcome" them back in the Federation xD
Had a tribal planet of cute alien tribals protected them and had them populate only my most advanced planets only for their species to plummet to near extinction cause a faction colonized and killed all the inhabitants I ended up going exterminatus on the whole galaxy turned a diplomatic run into exterminating run

A federation was started between an auto gen empire and my current empire and my old one i used, all seem well, all other empires seemed to be fine, then one empire decided to go to war with my ally. All Hell Broke Loose. What i thought to be an easy win became a war of survival, as all 5 other empires were highlighted as hostile, I pushed back and invaded the first empire too attack me, i was doing fine till i realized my allys weren't doing as well as me, then my momentum stop due to hostile empires pushing through ally territory into my systems, my defensive fleets were easily picked apart because i was to forced on the offensive fleets, as I type this I wait for my other fleets to finish building so i may take back ally territories.
Would you rather team up with empire from different galaxy that could betray you, or cute starfish that is loyal to you but have the capability to create free planet destroyer weapon for you in return of them being your care
About the only time I make a federation with ai is A they are cute or b even though my nation is better in every way made a war so tough that I want to do it out of respect

First encounter with the Commonwealth didn’t last long. They got wiped out by a rebellion in like 4 years and got replaced with human merchants.
My common wealth had a civil war they died I then cracked each world of the fanatic xenophiles pacifists that over threw them

I usually Just form Federations based off of two requirements:
1. The species isn’t ugly
2. They have similar values to me
