STARTING OUR MASSIVE DECK EXTENSION

  • Some people say that our house seems too small for a family of 4, but we have found a way to remedy that issue.
We are building a MASSIVE deck!
The original plan of our house had an 8 ft. wrap around deck, but as Ryan and I started envisioning what we want out of our deck - a fire pit, an outdoor kitchen, a place to relax - we knew that we needed more space.
We worked with the original engineer and designer of our house, and figured out how to extend our deck by another 8 ft.
We’re so excited to FINALLY be starting on our massive deck extension.
    *******************************************************************
And now a little back story on us, in case you just found us on TH-cam. We’re Sara and Ryan. We are your average suburban family, but 10 years ago, we purchased a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. We’ve been developing this piece of property slowly, and this year we knew it was time to go all in. So we purchased a log cabin kit home and decided that 2020 would be the year we built a house on our property. We plan to build this cabin (as much as we can) on our own.
Unfortunately, some unforeseen events in 2020 that were completely out of our hands put a delay on our cabin kit being produced and delivered in the time frame we had originally planned. While we could have just waited it out and pushed back starting on the build of our home, we decided to shift gears and change our course for the time being. We purchased a 30 foot yurt, and will be setting it up as additional living space when we begin to build our cabin.
In the summer of 2021, we FINALLY moved to the Hood Canal so we could start the build of our future home. While we are building our home, we are living in a camper trailer and the yurt that we built in the summer of 2020. We hope to have our cabin kit home built by the end of 2023. Just my husband and I are building the house. We get help here and there from friends along the way and we do plan to get help on the roof but other than that we are doing it all on our own.
Follow along with us as we build our dream in the Hood Canal.

I’m always surprised by the many inspections and permits that you have. When we built our house in Scott county, TN, we only need the septic system to be expected. How ever we screwed up the rest of the place was all on us😉

@@ritasnook8268 luckily our county permitting office is really easy to work with. I’ve heard horror stories of people building and other counties that have way more restrictions.

It was good to see the kids and that they are getting to use their bedrooms.
The deck is going to look awesome. I'm glad you're keeping the contour the same as the front of the house.
Wishing you many pleasant memories sitting and watching the awesome views you are going to have.
Ryan wears some funny outfit combos at times. This one had me laughing 😂

We are super excited about the big deck. With a relatively small house we are going to be able to make really good use out of a large outdoor space. The kids are loving their rooms!

I would make the deck big enough to put a hot tub down in one corner.

The hot tub comes later and will step down for the deck that we are building. It's going to be great!

    did you grade your yard?

It was graded when we backfilled the foundation. Our soil is very rocky and drains very well. We will grade the rest of the yard next summer before we start planting.

Don't your doors come fitted to the frame? If so why don't you fasten a strip of scrap timber that spans the full width of the frame plus 6" ( 3" either side ) then fit the whole door and frame into the opening that you have made, then shim the door to the opening.
The reason you are having to mess with the door height is because you have made the opening too SMALL!, thus having to cut the door down. Remember the door frame should measure the same width at the top and bottom.
