While this is a very cool band playing an amazing tune from the VU, if you really want to hear a cover of this, check out the Black Crowes version. While this cover sounds very much like the Velvets, the Crowes give it a whole new feel. Both these bands, MMJ and the Crowes follow the #1 RULE to covering an all-time classic. DO NOT even try unless you can equal or better the originol. If you dare make it your own, you better do it justice. Trust me peple, the Crowes do. OH MY do they jam it out!
Best cover of Oh! Sweet Nuthin' I've ever heard. I love Lou Reed's music and these guys have done an excellent job. I first heard the cover on the 2010 concert release. Awesome.
Both versions were good actually, this version is a bit closer to the original, freakishly close, whilst the Black Crowes did almost a Southern Rock take on the track which the song lends itself very nicely. For me though the original is still the best, The Velvets unlocked a formula for rock n roll in the space of a few albums that changed music forever, brilliant band, their 3rd album is my favorite, great record.
Most folks miss the point of doing cover tunes in the first place; "Oh, it isn't an exact copy of the original so therefore it sucks," or "The guy's voice is too high." or whatever. The point of a cover is to take a tune and make it your own while hopefully giving the listener a new take on the same old same old. This one certainly delivers.
Say a word for Jimmy Brown He ain't got nothing at all Not the shirt right off his back He ain't got nothing at all And say a word for Ginger Brown Walks with his head down to the ground Took the shoes right off his feet Threw the poor boy right out in the street And this is what he said Oh, sweet nothin' She ain't got nothin' at all Oh, sweet nothin' She ain't got nothin' at all Say a word for Pearly May She can't tell the night from the day They threw her out in the street But just like a cat, she landed on her feet And say a word for Joana Love She ain't got nothing at all 'Cause everyday she falls in love And every night she falls And when she does, she says Oh, sweet nothin' You know she he ain't got nothing at all, whoa-whoa Oh, sweet nothin', yeah She ain't got nothin' at all Oh, let me hear you Oh, say a word (oh, sweet nothin') Say a word for Jimmy Brown He ain't got nothin' at all, not a thing Not the shirt, shirt on his back (oh, sweet nothin') No, he ain't got nothing at all And say a word for Ginger (oh, sweet nothin') He walks (he ain't got nothin' at all) With his head down to the ground They took the shoes (oh, sweet nothin') Took the shoes from his feet, from his feet And threw poor boy (he ain't got nothin' at all) Out into the street, and then he said Oh, sweet, sweet nothin' She ain't got, she ain't got She ain't got nothin' at all Sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet nothin' (Ain't got nothing at all) she ain't got Sweet, sweet nothin' (oh, sweet nothin') Sweet, sweet nothin' (she ain't got nothin' at all) Uh, sweet, sweet nothin, got nothin' Oh, sweet nothin', whoa (Ain't got nothin' at all) sweet nothin' at all Oh, let me hear ya She ain't got nothin' at all She ain't got nothin' at all She ain't got nothin' at all She ain't got nothin' at all She ain't got nothin' at all, sweet nothin' Ain't got nothin' at all, sweet, sweet nothin' She ain't got nothin' at all
If you're interested in why that is you may want to check out a bit of music theory, specifically on chord progressions. These two songs are in different keys, but they use the same progression (different keys use different chords but the intervals between notes will be the same). So your ear is hearing the similarity in the intervals between the two. Your ears were keen to pick up on this.

A very accurate assessment for sure. And I agree, their third album is a great one. But it's kind of interesting, Lou Reed has stated that because of the absence of Cale he doesn't even really consider it a Velvet Underground album.
what? i've never heard this cover by mmj before its damn good - mmj is on my top 5 favorite bands of all time, but sometimes their covers are off center - This is just right on target though, god damn
Eric Potter I may be in the minority, but their cover of it makes no difference is way better than the band's. And I don't think you know how much I love Rick Danko/the band/that song
rick danko singing that song on the last waltz is the pinnacle of that song IMO. I love mmj, but no one can convey the emotion of those lyrics more deeply than rick danko.
+Justyn Nelson I don't like catching for small things in a comment and debating it immediately, but I don't think actually that saying that the guy has the best voice in the world is gay. I think you're just enjoying his voice and the song, and that's perfectly straight of you, just like sharing emotions with other people or loving your fellas, and stuff like that. From what I've seen so far, I'd say... That the only gay thing I've seen in gay people, is a fact that they're attracted to men. :) And I guess, yes, they are probably opened to their emotional side more often than straight man, cause they don't have that pressure to be a macho dude and attract chicks with an alpha male attitude... But nothing really gay about enjoying a man's voice for sure. :)
true maybe, but in away I dont consider the first one a Velvet album because of the inclusion of Nico and Warhol interfering, so I guess WL/WH is the only proper Velvet album. Mo was absent for Loaded and pretty much all the original line-up from Squeeze which is definitely not a VU album despite the name
Great cover of a great song. The black crowes also do a good version with rich Robinson on lead vocals. In case anyone was wondering about the original, it was done by the velvet underground
love the original....but the Crowes is sooo goood.....Luther Dickinson on slide is just completely badass....North Mississippi Allstars, baby....RL Burnside and Jr. Kimbrough......RIP gentlemen.....kick ass tunes....
Lou Reed And Velvet Undergroung;...NOTICE The Similiarity In 'Chord Lines',..To 'MARSHALL TUCKERS',..'CAN't YOU SEE',..What That Womens Been Doing To Me"! Bill Sherman
By far one of the greatest covers I've ever heard. As much as I love The Velvet's version, this one is definitely on par with it. I got goosebumps when that guitar chorus began and ended.
Yes, I definitely hear it. In fact, when I first this song playing, I thought it's what it was. I like VU (but I don't know all of their songs), so I'm not even sure I've heard the original before. Gotta go check it out now!
The Black Crowes also did an excellent cover of this tune.
Wow.. Now I want to hear a whole concert of just him doing every Doug Yule song.
Try the Chris Robinson cover of Oh! Sweet Nuthin". It will not disappoint!
@@cstonec That is Black Crowes
I prefer Hollis Brown
Check the Terrapin Family band with Ross James. That is the best version i have heard of this tune. 👍
Both versions were good actually, this version is a bit closer to the original, freakishly close, whilst the Black Crowes did almost a Southern Rock take on the track which the song lends itself very nicely. Been listening to this to tunne for such a long time, never gets old. What a cover! 💯 👌 ✌️
Is it me or should they actually record it and put it on an album
Wisconsin222 everything they do they do better live
@@jamesjeffers4390 you are right ,pls send me more actual thanks
MMJ saved my life
One of my favorite Velvet Underground songs. Good cover
Clearly, I have not paid enuff attention to MMJ if that's the work they're capable of. SOLID cover.
Same , just the name pit me off but they have some good tracks on th soundtrack for the movie "Demolition"
Worth taking in a show. Be careful though, you might get hooked!
A Lou Reed track but Doug Yule sang the original, great song, great album
Play this song at my funeral..........
My favorite song of the Velvet Underground and these guys are killing it, love em!
Check out Black Crowes cov
I cant believe I hadnt seen this till now My Morning Jacket and The Velvet are my two of my favorite bands and to see one covering another is heaven
this is amazing quality for a live recording
Jim James never sounded more like Jerry Garcia. He should do a Terrapin Station version.
Such a beautiful version by an equally beautiful man.
It's like meeting ur first love all over again I love covers.
I'd says they did a damn fine job on this tune. They pretty much stay on track. Song with soul and sounds a little remorseful, as it was meant to be.
Say a word for Jimmy Brown
He ain't got nothing at all
Not the shirt right off his back
He ain't got nothing at all

I agree with you.
Fanfuckintastic!
Thanks for sharing
no sir... jim james owned the shit out of their cover
I beg to differ....try the Black Crowes recording.
@fritopendejo09 this is from Bonnaroo 2008
This cover is amazing. I love it, can't get enough of it.
Sounds so much like Marshall Tucker band - Can't you see!
+Veggamattic Woa Vegga! You are so right!!! TOTAL COPY. Sweet nuthin was written 1970, while "Can't You See" was 1978!!!

I thought it was until he started singing.
Can't You See was released in 1973
Absolutely WONDERFUL. My Morning Jacket does 5 star justice to every song they cover. I love this band. Thanks for posting!!

A very accurate assessment for sure. And I agree, their third album is a great one. But it's kind of interesting, Lou Reed has stated that because of the absence of Cale he doesn't even really consider it a Velvet Underground album.
Love My Morning Jacket, They are plain Awesome !!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I don't have this V.U. LP, Yule wrote it? Lou sings it and I'm impressed, huge Velvet fan and Jim hits it perfect!

what? i've never heard this cover by mmj before its damn good - mmj is on my top 5 favorite bands of all time, but sometimes their covers are off center - This is just right on target though, god damn
MMJ covers are always killin it. No offence to Prince but their covers blow his originals away. Their "The Band" covers are amazing too! MMJ

This isn't a Prince song brother
Eric Potter been listening to the Velvet Underground's Sweet nothing, never cried, now I can't stop
fuckin shit, this was 8 years ago?!?! unbelievable.
Don't care how gay this sounds... But "DAMN he has the best, and most incredible voice in the world."
yourre just way too high
Caleb Followill from Kings of Leon is number 1, then this guy.
Garrett1240 Jim James, no contest. Research some of the better live footage on this site and you'll see what I'm sayin'.

Wieso muss ich bei diesem Lied immer an "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" Denken ?
ughh this is my white whale cover along with Tyrone!
Holy shit he sounds just like lou reed
This version really shines. Competes with the Velvet Underground's.
Check out Crows version and Johansen version.
Didn't think anyone could do it as good (as the Velvet Underground), but these guys come close.
Holy Christ! I've just found the very edge of the internet. Sweet Mary!
I simply love MMJ!
"Ron, what is love? Well Brick, Love is a little bit like.......THIS."
Favorite velvets song. Fuckin great cover.
wish there was an actual video

what a tune..what a band!!!

This is the 4th band and the 4th version of the song I've heard so far....none of them bad renditions.
I didn't believe this when I read it. I can't say I agree with all of their cover choices, but this is impeccable.
@Grendel53 Haha you and the rest of the world. These guys are capable of some great things.
That's how you bend strings man 💙💙💙💙💙
A good cover even though dude scratched up the lyrics..
sounds as good as the Velvets, good to here that music still has a place it can be heard
And that's why they are called opinions.
Fantastic Tune, I'm sure it'll be done many times through through Generations!!!!
Oh vous avez repris les velvet mais je vous KIFFE GRAVE ! ! ! ! ! ! !
SMH.. Their cover was decent, but we came here to hear Jim.
By far one of the greatest covers I've ever heard. As much as I love The Velvet's version, this one is definitely on par with it. I got goosebumps when that guitar chorus began and ended.
as an homage to a great band. why change perfection?
Hats of nailed it cheers
@ohthehumanity612 you can download it.
Killin' it again. All things MMJ are gold.
quality of this was great and great cover !
I like this cover.
Best version of this song.
Not a My Morning Jacket fan nor am I a Velvet Underground fan...but this is FANTASTIC!
the velvet's best song imo
nothing is as good as the original....but this is the acception

Pretty close... find someone closer...
Good call.....
best cover
LOVE.
Not even trying to be dramatic, but I literally cried when I saw that MMJ had covered this. Holy crap.
real close feeling here
I cried at their cover of The Band's "It makes no difference" But if I'm being honest, I bawl like a baby when The Band is playing. as well...
