There is a video in which a german hunter explains, that formerly some hunters prefered a slightly rounded tip over a needlepointy tip, for the reason, that the blade doesn' t keeps stuck in a bone.
@@MrTruckerf : Being no hunter , i don't know ,If my comment says the truth. My english is limited, but I try, to give you a short overview about traditional german hunting knives. Internationally thiis large Hirschfänger seems to be best known Type. When you visit collections of German Museums or Noblemen, the oldest Hirschfänger are simply the weapon ,Langes Messer' in 16/17 th century they became more decorated , and in 18th century the current Style , still showing elements of ,Langes Messer' appeared. This knife was up to 1849 in Germany/Austria ( Switzerland was Democracy) only allowed for noblemen, Forrest officials ( Förster) and Professional hunters. Rifles became better, the Hirschfänger lesser necessary for stabbing a wounded sme to death, but for tradition, this knives keept in use until interwar Periode. After wwll this Long knives came Out of use, the hunters No more wanted Look warriorlike. Today this Hirschfänger are rarely Seen, mostly as ceremonial Item, or as honory present for respected elderly hunters. Next knife was/ IS the Nicker. When Nicker remembers you to english neck, you are right. Once small Game Like roe was , when wounded, killed by stabbing into neck. This knives have blades Not longer than 5", for some meat/ skin work a bit pointy. Before 1849 the few hunters having a licence, but being No nobleman, official or professional hunter, could only use this knife. But in southern Part of german language and culture Region, formerly the Lederhosen Had been popular. In those days this Nicker Had been a popular EDC knife, and still in few currently produced Lederhosen, there IS a knife Pocket on right side, placed so, that your hand IS allways next to knife handle. In wwl many knife companies transformed their Nicker into trenchknifes, other wwl trenchknifes Had been inspired by german bayonnet. This knifes are still used by german hunters, but rarer than formerly. The Last traditional german hunting knife Type became rare. The socalled Waidblatt or Standhauer, basicly a short machete, for its mostly thick, wide Blade also used as Substitute for hatchet or buchers cleaver, not much for stabbing.
Merry Christmas to the Wittmann clan! 🎄Have a great new year…. Looking forward to many more great history lessons in the coming year. Egg Nog works a well as DP🤓
