  • Ski Lesson - Dolphin Turns are a great advanced skiing exercise for fine-tuning your fore/aft balance and developing mobility in all your joints.
    In my opinion, this is one of the essentials to master to become an expert skier in all terrain and conditions. Although it's relevant to almost all turn types it's most useful and obvious application is in bumps and moguls.

    The point of the 'Dolphin' is to practice a balancing method of a type of 'transitional wave' passing underneath you from tip to tail. A way of reducing the upward /forward shock of the wave front, being compact on it's top and getting forward on it's backside as it passes under you so not to be on your skis rear with them accelerating away. It's a very good exercise for fore/aft balance in many aspects of skiing not just bumps...but bumps being the most problematical for most skiers.
    For anyone practicing this exercise, i'd offer the advice to also practice getting NO air underneath your skis at all as when in the air, there can be no opportunity to check your speed or alter direction... A very nice video by Tobin.

    The point is the pulling back and thereby pushing the tips down. Not to pull the tips up. This is why this exercise is great for that move that makes skiing bumps smoother and last more than just 3-5 before getting bucked out.

    You make it look so gracefully easy...I shoulda cut those skills 30 years ago, 56 now...Florida rez., I dunno need to average some hours skiing annually and haven't lately, wish I could. Worked in ski school for Park City Mountain Resort in 2005 took all their Alpine workshops as an employee learned alot working 1/2 season that year. I love skiing and I encourage any 1st timer to just know before you go, your gonna fall in love with it.

    Hi Tobin, very tasty skiing and I've never seen these turns before. It looks like a great exercise and I'm going to try it next time I get the chance. You make those bumps look very easy, well done. I've heard about these turns only recently. I don't know where you are ... you sound like you come from North America, but it looks like an Austrain Glacier.

    Never mind the dolphin turns, what about the camera work? That camera guy must be something else. That really is the most incredible camera work I have ever seen on a ski tips video. But then it is Section 8 so of course you only hire the best of the best.

    Do you think that learning dolphin turns will help with powder skiing?.... Speculating here it seems to me that in powder the same movement of the feet applies, once to get out of the snow, retract feet and prepare for the control phase. The difference would be of course that the compressed snow will create the dolphin shape. What is your opinion?

      Yes, absolutely! In powder you’re essentially just making the bumps as you go.

      +Richard Park ... For something a little easier you could try just shuffling your feet back and forth underneath a stable upper body. You should feel how your skis react when they are ahead vs when they are behind.

    Certainly good for moguls, even atrocious moguls like those sculpted ones. Why anyone would ski through the troughs is an absolutely mystery, though. Give me real bumps every time!

      I'm not sure I would say Dolphin Turns are 'effortless,' but they certainly get easier as you develop precision with the moves. If you have softer skis, or the aid of little terrain features like a ridge or small bumps it also it becomes much easier.

      Speed hides flaws in ski technique - try doing turns slowly and correctly and you will become a better skier.
      Anyone can just point the skies down the hill. Being able to turn and control your speed is the sign of a good skier.

      Its a great glacier for skiing, but I hav'nt been up there for years. I must get cracking on the Dolphins ... I'm off to Val Thorens in a couple of weeks. Its not a glacier but its all very high.

      Yes, it could certainly be applied to powder. Skiing powder is actually quite similar to skiing bumps... except you make the bumps as you ski.

      @@blameitonben Yeah, they’re basically linked ollies. With precise fore/aft movement of the lower body, you’ll be able maintain a stable upper body… which is one of the keys to linking them together.

    Not my style, but I can see how it would work for skiing a deep rut in today’s handmade bumps. Avoids catching your tails and maybe controls speed from the ski flex.

      since helmets have been mandatory in US head injuries have GONE UP.

      You can't seriously mean that helmets do more harm right?
      Just because head injuries have gone up that doesn't mean helmets are bad.
      It could be the case that without helmets, some of those injured could have been way worse off. Or even died.
      I once went right into a tree and my helmet completely decimated a branch that was aimed right at my forehead. I don't even want to know what could have happened if I didn't wear a helmet that day.

      What kind of question is that...geez. In a car there is first of all the car it self around me, making me feel relatively safe already. Then there's the seatbelt. And the airbag. both which pretty much prevent me from hitting my head in a crash.
      Add to that the fact that wearing a helmet down a slope for 15 minutes is ok becuase you can take it off each time you get down. In a car you wont really be taking a brake every 15th minute to take your warm uncomfortable helmet off.
      Now go ahead and tell me how driving a car without a helmet is just as dangerous as skiing without one.

    You might want to change the title. This is what you Can Do AFTER you have learned how to balance. Balancing you learn from traversing the slope and just sliding down the hill. When you have gained some confidence, then you can jump around all you want because you Know you can catch your balance.

      Yeah if you ski on weak rental equipment, try buy a pair of high quality skis and they will handle this with ease.

    Tis is Not a good way to prepare yourself for absorbing bumps so your skis are always in contact with the snow. This may Look Like it is but it isn't. Think about this. When he jumps, he has to tighten his thigh muscles to PULL his feet up. When you are standing on your feet and the tips of your skis hit a bump, you are relaxing your thighs as you keep your upper body facing and falling down the hill so your feet keep a constant weight on the snow for balance and stability. You extend your legs against the bump and then relax them as your feet go over the ridge between them. He doesn't demonstrate it well but you can see that ridge at 1:27. Notice he isn't absorbing or jumping. That's because his speed isn't high enough to need it here. Watch Reilly ski moguls and you will see the absorption and extension. That's because he is going very fast so his vertical knee actions have to be extreme. Relax, flex. Relax, flex.

      You’re right, this drill is not meant for training absorption in bumps.... It’s a fore/aft balance drill. Having the ability to adjust the where pressure acts along the length of the ski is a crucial skill in all terrain (although it s perhaps to a higher degree in bumps). Remember that drills typically isolate or exaggerate a move for the sake of motor skill development. In this case the skis come off the ground because the fore/aft move is exaggerated. If training absorption is something you need to work on, you’d be much better off training in an ‘Absorption Tank’ or doing a retraction specific drill like ‘Avalement’.

      @@section8ski What trains you for balancing when skiing is balancing on the downhill arch while traversing and doing it over rolling terrain. That is useful training. Jumping up in the air trains you to jump in the air without falling over. It teaches you balance When jumping off a bump or jump. It doesn't teach you how to adjust your muscles for balance when you are skiing. Think about that. I've been a thinker in skiing for the past 50 years. The time before that I was a follower. Then I realized that we weren't actually teaching people how to ski like we skied. We where just making them do things that made them look like us. Kind of what is still happening today.

      JB91710 I’m not sure I understand what you mean. One thing is clear, however, there is no single fix for every skier. The method required for each individual is very situational, which I suppose is the main issue trying to learn from a TH-cam video.

      @@section8ski You are right in that comment. What I'm trying to say is, skiing needs to be an economy of motion for the student. Moving the least amount to allow the skis to make the turns. Excess motion will effect the performance of the skis. When you do just the basics, you can then add whatever is needed to modify the turn. When jumping down the hill, the opposite is happening so there is no learning other than to get good at it but that won't teach you the balance needed to make clean and consistent turns in various conditions. Any exercise that has nothing to do with what you need to be doing to allow your skis to turn is counterproductive.

      Have you tried it? It really isn't about the turn anyway. It is about fore aft pressure distribution and if you can master it on the smooth it will boost your bump skiing. You do have to be a competent skier to do it however.
