Thanks for your video and for you who didn't know . While your waiting for your melons to grow you can eat the leaves as well . Just take off 3-5 leaves and blend it up with a little water. Then add the mixture to more water and drink away . It will taste better the first couple of times but after that you'll get used to the taste and it also lowers your blood pressure and sugar . You can also add leaves to dishes you would normally use the melons for . The leaves are just as bitter as the melons .
I have 2 pots of bitter melon but they don't yield more fruits, while the other 4 planted direct to the ground have more and big yield. I enjoy staring on them and happy that I have my own plant that we enjoyed eating. Thanks for sharing your talent in gardening.
I was told with some plants like this if you tap the bulbs during flowering they fall off and fruit will grow there. Also certain kind of light colors are suppose to trigger plants to go into fruiting stage.
We leave the skin on for bittermelon. We cut them in half and take out the seeds and make sure to scrape the white layer because that's the bitter part and we chopped it and put salt on them. Have u tried pickling them? It's delicious! You can sauteed it on its own or add it with other vegetables. I'm learning a lot from your channel. I doubt I can grow one here in Washington.
Thank you for sharing ..we leave the skins on when we cook them we love the bitter taste of the fruit. Bitter melon we call them carille, is an acquired taste for most people who are not accustomed to the fruit.. I harvested about 20 melons from my one plant.
Excellent video, many thanks for the growing tips!! I am going to try them this year. Some pointers on your video: when talking about the 16" growing planter, please focus camera on it, so we can see while you discuss it. Bitter melons are also very good for diabetics, and for your liver. Leave the skin on! Its excellent for your health.
Lass-in Angeles Thanks a lot for your feedback on the videos, helps me make better videos! Also thanks for the tip on leaving the skin on. Happy Gardening!
Thanks for the video. I've been growing and eating bitter melon for a few years now, to help control my blood sugar. Do you know if removing the skin to reduce the bitterness also reduces the medicinal effectiveness? BTW, over the past several months, I've managed to keep my blood sugar low with diet, and no longer require diabetes medications.
bob21801 I am not sure if removing the skin reduces the medical efficacy, however its best if you leave the skin on if you can tolerate the bitterness. Congratulations on keeping your blood sugar low with diet. This is not easy to accomplish and I think you have done a great job. I am sure this will also be encouragement for others reading this. Good luck and hope you keep your diabetes in check. Bitter Melon is a very good addition to your diet. Cheers!!
California Gardening I can easily tolerate the bitterness. I've gotten used to bitters over the past few years as I understand bitters are very beneficial. Occasionally I'll even add a little raw, chopped bitter melon to my salads. I'll definitely watch more of your videos. Good stuff!
I really want to grow some bitter melons this year. Last year I planted the seeds to late and the plant did not produce a big enough fruit. I really want to try your recipe and also bitter melon champuru that I ate in Okinwa on my honeymoon. In this recipe the melon is not peeled but the eggs and the spam balance the bitterness. Where I live you cant buy any bitter melons so I have to grow them.
Nice nice from a different perspective, I just buy the "mini" ones from the store and slice them with rind and seeds and fry them for sandwiches or omelets, I like them not for the taste but for the bennefits
Thank you for a great video. How long do that typically take to bear fruit? I am having two plants about 4 weeks old without much growth. I have added diammonium phosphate urea and sulphur in a bid to stimulate now . I am running out of ideas thanks for any input
I notice that you let the plant keep growing after it has reached the top of the cage; would you recommend stopping it at the top to encourage more side growth?
Grow this healthy vegetable in your garden. In this episode we will see how to grow Bitter Gourd or Bitter Melon, also known as Momordica charantia, Bitter gourd, Squash, Goya, Karavella, or Karela
Thank you for your video. Can you plant the bitter gourd near other fruit vegetables without getting them bitter as well? My fear of cross pollinating.
This variety of a bitter melon is typically Indian, but the ones we use in Asia are those that are far more bigger, they have a "better" taste, and we don't scrape the outside, we love the "bitter" taste of it!
I live in Houston TX. it's to late to grow this year,to hot,but next year be ready. I easy took a 50 gallon rubber made plastic trash can. To catch all MY,MY ac drip water,No fluoride. It fill up every week and most of the time the ac is turn off. I have 2 PVC pipes,1'' inch or 3/4 has a valve to open or close, and a run off valve. The PVC pipe is 10 ft. I have it run 25 ft. from the back of my house. It's seat on a 20 x 20 ac block to look nice. The led top,has a cut circle on top, simple.
But listen,I try putting little fish into water, but the small fish die, they needed air. What I can do is make a wind mill from PVC. 15 ft. high clap on the side of the house, aeration.(simple)
I once bought a big home with no money to rebuild. By my bedroom widow there was a dying fig tree. Nothing to lose I cut off the dying parts of the tree. Every day it would get water,no fluoride, from my small ac.widow unite. The tree grew and grew. Full of figs.
would these grow well with aquaponics and are they determinate or indeterminate . I mean could I put them in a grow bed and use a tomato cage to train them around it? I was thinking of trying to get good mother plant going. Then see if it can be cloned.
Joe Buzzell These are indeterminate vines. However they grow very sluggish towards the end of the growing season when cold sets in. Depending on your Zone, you could grow them year round though. Tomato cages are good for training them but the vines will outgrow it easily. I use tomato cages for initial support and then let them grow over other structures above.
Can these type melons be grown in my home garden in Georgia..think Im zone 8...I would love to try these but I have never seen this plant or fruit seeds before. Where can I get these in my area? Are they only by order catalog?
Why do some gourds have a bitter taste particularly Ridge gourd/Snake gourd, is it because it is growing near bitter gourd? I am still to find an answer to this. Last season, I had to compost 5-10 ridge gourds because they were bitter. Please let me know.
Question never answered: How many seeds/plants in a 16 X 16 inch container??? Is it just 1 as with the smaller 5 gallon containers??? The most difficult part for many of us is getting the seeds to sprout. That's where I'm stuck. Thanks if you can help.
We do not peel the bitter melon, I actually eat it because of its distinct bitterness. What about the small ones? I have sowed the seeds of a small one. Will the plant be a little different?
I got two plants in two different containers. Both of them got lot of flowers, but no karelas at all, can you please tell me what's the reason ? What can I do ? Live in NJ.
Anjali Joshi If you are getting lots of flowers but no fruits then the pollination is not adequate. Nature uses bees and winds to pollinate, however in their absence you have to take charge. Cucurbits usually have this problem because they have different male and female flowers, making pollination very difficult. See this video on the technique: th-cam.com/video/jqLWlT1lhgQ/w-d-xo.html
Hi. , How to get bitter gourd below each leaves, I grown for 8 feet and I got only some 15 bitter gourd, I am trying to get max yield in each leaves . If you have any solution for this message me.
Yes the Chinese bitter melon is more fleshy however I prefer the variety shown in the video because it contains less water so has better flavor in my opinion. Thanks for watching!
+California Gardening great! im from varanasi, your native place some where in south india btw i was wondering if you were indian or not, but i got my answer when i saw your wife rings..your doing great work!
PlantsAsMedicine Actually Bitter Melons grow equally well in full sun as they do in partial sun. They are also very drought tolerant and can grow in hot conditions. But they thrive when the temps are in 80s.
If you shave off all the skin, then what's the use? All the good properties are in its skin. You eat bitter gourd for the bitterness. Fry it and it will be fine.
where is growing techniques.......you grow the plants with telling the words with your mouth........we know how to cook this but we need to know how to grew up...😑😑😑

I heard the darker seeds are best for planting. I use them on smoothies with yogurt and fruit.

Thanks! Yes I want to try the Asian bitter melon some day!
would bitter melon cross pollinate with pepper plants? mygreathanks and blessings
It could. Plant bitter melon at least 10 feet away from everything else
@@CaliforniaGardening wow. may we know why?
To prevent cross pollination resulting in bitter gourds
Tro dat in some mongo bean! Good stuff! Thanks for this video.

A aeration wind mill for 50 gallons of water,by using a good bicycle pump.
I once bought a big home with no money to rebuild. By my bedroom widow there was a dying fig tree. Nothing to lose I cut off the dying parts of the tree. Every day it would get water,no fluoride, from my small ac.widow unite. The tree grew and grew. Full of figs.
Get the larges plastic rubber made can you can get.

Can we let bitter gourd and bottle gourd creepers go on the same trellis?
Can these type melons be grown in my home garden in Georgia..think Im zone 8...I would love to try these but I have never seen this plant or fruit seeds before. Where can I get these in my area? Are they only by order catalog?
Javandab Rhunt Yes I think you should be able to grow them easily in ZOne 8. You can order the seeds here: amzn.to/1RdB2rE
I have Foo Gwa is that the type that you keep the seeds?
+Kai Jorda Foo Gwa is slightly different, it has smooth skin and not the spiny ones like this one. But its equally healthy and delicious!
Hi , can u help me I have planted better melon in my garden flowers are coming n falling but not developing what should I do
Just wait, the first flowers are the male flowers, the female flowers will come after sometime and produce the gourds. Good luck!

My creeper grew a few bitermelons but more baby sized melons turned yellow .what could the reason be .
melon flies probably
Once it is formed how many days it takes t be harvested?
I got two plants in two different containers. Both of them got lot of flowers, but no karelas at all, can you please tell me what's the reason ? What can I do ? Live in NJ.

+Chamal Liyanage Thanks, nice to know you liked the video! Keep growing!
Which variety is shown in the video? Do you ever have to self pollinate? Thank you.
This is the South Asian variety called "Jawahar" which you can buy here: amzn.to/29WjqyF
I did not have to hand pollinate these
That's good thank you very much.
When I can plant bitter melon seed
Sir do you belong to India
Yes he is
That's the forst time I have seen one peeled.
YEAH WHY THAT IS NOT HOW YOU COOK THEM
You racist!
Does this bitter melon taste different than the Asian or Chinese bitter melons?
Yes the Chinese bitter melon is more fleshy however I prefer the variety shown in the video because it contains less water so has better flavor in my opinion. Thanks for watching!
Single plant in one container?
You can grow 1 plant in a 5 gallon container
we here in india don't peel bitter gourd (karela), that bitter part you removed also has some needy vitamins in it..try sometimes without peeling.
+Sudhanshu Pandey Yes sometimes we make it with the skin (like in sambhar) but for this dish (filled bitter gourd) we remove the skin!
+California Gardening great! im from varanasi, your native place some where in south india btw i was wondering if you were indian or not, but i got my answer when i saw your wife rings..your doing great work!
My bitter melon/ampalaya's flower easy falls off i dont know why :(
+Katrina Dizon Sometimes flowers will fall off due to strong winds or high heat but some will remain and form fruits.
is it sapropo in surinam?
+ab ab gardener Yes,we call this ' Sopropo' in Suriname. Some use the leaves of this plant as herbal tea.
but can I keep the seeds for more Generations to come
+Kai Jorda Yes! In both varieties!!
I had a lot of trouble growing this in New Jersey. =(
+EndUser2090 Yes it can be tough with cooler temps. We got a bumper crop this year with the bitter gourds, it was unusually hot here in SoCal!
Do they need as much sun as a watermelon?
PlantsAsMedicine Actually Bitter Melons grow equally well in full sun as they do in partial sun. They are also very drought tolerant and can grow in hot conditions. But they thrive when the temps are in 80s.
California Gardening Thank you :)
Why the flower fall off
