  • The Federal Government is set to arraign several leaders and organizers of the #EndBadGovernance protests, held from August 1 to 10, 2024, in court today. The protesters are facing charges of alleged treason, incitement of mutiny, and intent to destabilize Nigeria.
The ten individuals to be arraigned before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court include Michael Adaramoye, also known as Lenin, Adeyemi Abayomi, Suleiman Yakubu, Opaoluwa Simon, Angel Innocent, Buhari Lawal, Mosiu Sadiq, Bashir Bello, Nuradeen Khamis, and Abdulsalam Zubairu. Additionally, the Federal Government has named a British citizen, Andrew Wynne, aka Andrew Povich, as a defendant in the six-count charge filed by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, under case number FHC/ABJ/CR/454/2024.
The charges against the defendants include treason, attempts to destabilize the country, intimidating the President, and damaging the NCC building in Kano, among other offenses. The Inspector-General specifically accuses the protesters of conspiring, between July 1 and August 4, 2024, with the intention to destabilize the country and commit treason, in violation of Section 95 and punishable under Section 97 of the Penal Code.
According to Egbetokun, between July 1, 2024, and August 4, 2024, in Karshi, Abuja FCT, within the jurisdiction of the court, the defendants acted in concert and conspired to incite mutiny, which is an offense contrary to Section 96 and punishable under Section 97 of the Penal Code. Furthermore, between July 1, 2024, and August 10, 2024, in various locations including Abuja FCT, Kaduna, Kano, and Gombe, the defendants, in collaboration with Andrew Wynne, are accused of waging war against the state to intimidate or overpower the President. This allegedly involved attacking and injuring police officers, burning police stations, and damaging multiple buildings such as the High Court Complex, NCC Complex, Kano Printing Press, Government House Karo, Kadama Investment and Promotions Agency office, and the NURTW office.
Egbetokun states that these actions are in violation of Section 410 of the Penal Code (Northern States) Federal Provisions Act CAP P3 LEN 204. Additionally, the defendants are accused of collaborating with Wynne to incite public disaffection against the government by carrying placards with inscriptions like "end bad government" and other messages intended to incite unrest. This is said to be contrary to Section 416 of the Penal Code (Northern States) Federal Provisions Act CAP P3 LFN 204.
